No. 19/20 Stony Brook women’s lacrosse three-peats as CAA
champions
As the cherry on top, the Seawolves have entered the
single digits in their pursuit of 100 straight victories over
league opponents — including playoffs — needing just nine more.
Stony Brook holds the longest active winning streak over
conference opponents across all NCAA Division I sports. Its last
defeat to a league foe came in 2014 — an 8-7 overtime loss to
Vermont.
“Our assistant coaches do an incredible job in bringing in the
right players here,” head coach Joe Spallina said in a postgame
press conference. “Players that fit. But there’s a belief. I get
asked this all the time, ‘How do we do it?’ Because we don’t
have five-star players out of high school. But they leave here
as those players. For us, it’s tradition.”
“No one believed in this group,” Spallina said. “People can say
whatever they want, everybody thought Stony Brook was going to
be different this year. And we weren’t.”
Stony Brook received the league’s automatic bid to the national
tournament. Its First Round opponent will be revealed in the
2025 NCAA Tournament selection show, which is scheduled for
Sunday at 9 p.m.

The game is being played at Boston College. Loyola is designated
as the “home” team.

Stony Brook vs. Loyola
These two programs have incredible histories of dominance within
their conferences. By their own standards, both have also had
“down” years. “Down” meaning quiet, but both are lurking and
hungry for a run. This could be a slugfest.
No. 19/20 Stony Brook women’s lacrosse commences 2025 NCAA
Tournament run against No. 15/16 Loyola Maryland

Then, the unseeded Seawolves (15-4, 8-0 CAA) will face the
unseeded No. 15/16 Loyola Maryland Greyhounds (13-6, 9-0 PL) in
a First Round matchup. The contest will be hosted at the Newton
Campus Lacrosse Field, the home of the second-seeded No. 2
Boston College Eagles, who received a bye. Opening draw is
scheduled for 4 p.m.
This will mark Stony Brook’s 12th NCAA Tournament appearance —
all consecutively — and it has yet to lose in the First Round.
If that trend continues, the Seawolves will challenge Boston
College — the reigning national champions — on Sunday on the
same site.
While Stony Brook earned an automatic bid, Loyola Maryland
received an at-large bid after suffering an upset, overtime loss
to Navy in the Patriot League (PL) title game. The Greyhounds
had won their conference’s previous five championships and have
won 93 consecutive regular season league matches.
These sides have played against each other three times
previously, with the Greyhounds coming out on top on all three
occasions. Their last meeting came in the Second Round of the
2023 NCAA Tournament, when Loyola Maryland defeated the
Seawolves 9-8.
