RICHMOND, Va. – Reigning CAA Champion No. 14 Stony Brook has
been selected as the preseason favorite in women’s lacrosse for
the third straight season by the league’s coaches.
Stony Brook collected seven first-place votes and 55 total
points after securing its second-straight CAA Championship and
11th consecutive appearance in the NCAA Tournament. Finishing
2024 with an 18-3 record and a perfect 8-0 mark in league play,
the Seawolves collected four wins over top 20 RPI teams. A pair
of preseason USA Lacrosse Magazine All-Americans, Avery Hines
and Charlotte Wilmoth, will front the nationally-ranked and CAA
favorite Seawolves in 2025. Midfielder Isabella Caporuscio joins
Hines and Wilmoth on the all-conference preseason team after
earning a CAA All-Rookie Team selection in 2024.

No. 14 Stony Brook women’s lacrosse maintains high expectations
       despite significant player turnover

“I took over a program that was in shambles, for a lack of a
better term,” Spallina said in an interview with The Statesman.
“To take it from there, and now to make it one of the premier
women’s lacrosse programs on the Island — besides the Island,
it’s bigger than that. But it’s provided young, Long Island
lacrosse players on the girls side with role models. You’re
playing for something bigger than yourself or your program.
You’re playing for the Island. You’re playing for the pride of a
       place where lacrosse is king.”
Of the 12 starters in the Seawolves’ season-ending defeat to
Syracuse in the Second Round of the national tournament, only
two are returning in 2025. Among them is midfielder Alexandra
Fusco, who filled in for midfielder Erin MacQuarrie — another
graduate — after she was sidelined by an injury during the 2024
       NCAA Tournament.
“Our goal is to enter championship weekend and win a national
championship,” Spallina said. “With that, comes smaller goals
along the way, and, obviously winning our conference games and
then establishing dominance in conference play.”
The Seawolves’ success over the past decade has heavily hinged
on their unique zone defense employed by Spallina; an area of
the field that also most encapsulates “plug-and-play.”
With defenders McKenzie Mitchell, Rachel Rosenberg and Clare
Levy — now the team’s defensive coordinator — all out of
eligibility, Hines will instead be supported by a defensive
group featuring midfielders Jordan Forte, Allie Masera and
Courtney Quinn along with defenders Alexa Constant, Abby Sabella
       and Morgan Harloff.
“[The defense] is like a machine,” Hines said. “You plug
different players in there and it runs the exact same. Just like
you’ve seen with backers in the past. Defensively, we’re always
doing the same thing. It’s script.”
On one hand, Alexandra Fusco, midfielder Isabella Caporuscio and
attacker Courtney Maclay are three returners that will
undoubtedly roam the field for Stony Brook and have the ability
       to contribute both ways.
Midfielders Molly LaForge and Julia Fusco — Alexandra Fusco’s
sister — alongside attacker Haydin Eisfeld will also play
important roles in the center of the field for Stony Brook.
While LaForge and Eisfeld have experience, Julia Fusco is a
freshman from Bayport-Blue Point High School set to make a
       significant impact.
Concerning the draw circle, the Seawolves will turn to transfer
midfielder Braeden Siverson to handle face-offs. After a solid
year with Bucknell, where she recorded 54 draw controls, 16
goals, 13 caused turnovers, and seven ground balls, Siverson has
the potential to make an impact in multiple areas.
Attackers Charlotte Wilmoth — who received 2025 USA Lacrosse
Magazine Preseason Honorable Mention and Preseason All-CAA Team
honors — and Riley McDonald have a combined seven seasons of
collegiate lacrosse experience. The former began her career at
Ohio State, but did not receive playing time as a freshman. She
then transferred to the University of Massachusetts, and, in
three years as a Minutewomen, Wilmoth registered 103 goals and
29 assists in 46 games. Conversely, the latter played in three
campaigns with Longwood, posting 116 goals and 38 assists in 43
contests during her tenure as a Lancer.
Attacker Casey Colbert will step in to replace Finn at the X,
taking on the responsibility of quarterbacking the Seawolves’
offense from behind the cage. She and Wilmoth could form a
dynamic pairing this season, as Stony Brook’s new transfer
       acquisition is a renowned cutter.
This season, Stony Brook has four goalkeepers on its roster: Ava
Yancey, Francesca Viteritti, Hannah Hudson and Natalia
Altebrando. Although Spallina has yet to name a starter,
Altebrando is the front-runner to take the first-game spot
       between the pipes.

No. 14 Stony Brook women’s lacrosse transfers look to build on
       the legacy of recent graduates
  HTML https://sbstatesman.com/132608/sports/no-14-stony-brook-womens-lacrosse-transfers-look-to-build-on-the-legacy-of-recent-graduates/
       [quote]
With several key departures in the offseason, the No. 14 Stony
Brook women’s lacrosse team did not just look for answers, it
reloaded with a transfer class ready to make an immediate
impact. With 24 players from the 2024 roster not returning,
including midfielder Ellie Masera — the program’s fourth
all-time scorer — the Seawolves will be leaning on new faces to
defend their position as one of the nation’s top programs.
Among the additions head coach Joe Spallina brought in are
transfer attackers Riley McDonald and Charlotte Wilmoth, as well
as midfielder Braeden Siverson. With the graduation of attackers
Morgan Mitchell and Kailyn Hart alongside Masera, amongst
others, the offense will be in much need of both a veteran
presence and quality — something Stony Brook will hope to get
from McDonald and Wilmoth. Outside of the offense, the draw
circle raises concerns as well, as the Seawolves’ loss in the
second round of the NCAA tournament came at the hands of being
       outdrawn all game long.
“It’s been super easy to come into [the team], people are just
working very hard around you and trying to do their best on the
field and that rubs off on you too,” McDonald said. “It makes
you push yourself harder. The girls are definitely a big factor
in the constant push for getting better and obviously, chemistry
       comes with stuff like that.”
“We usually made it to the first round of the NCAA tournament,”
Wilmoth said. “But we couldn’t really get over that hump, so
that’s why I wanted to go to Stony Brook and make a run in the
       NCAA tournament.”
“Coach Spallina is very strategic with everything that he does
and I feel like each transfer contributes to a piece of the
puzzle just in terms of being in the draw circle, defense or
attack,” Wilmoth said. “I feel like for [McDonald] and I, we
were brought for that offensive presence because they did lose a
lot of their scoring to graduates.”
Though Siverson is a midfielder, she specializes in draws. As a
freshman, she made an instant impact in Bucknell, leading the
team in draw controls with 54.
“I think that I play well under pressure, so I’m just excited to
get after it,” Siverson said. “Pressure is a privilege.”

No. 14 Stony Brook (2-0) at UAlbany (0-3)
       12 p.m. Eastern Sunday | Watch: ESPN+
“Hello, old foe.” Stony Brook and UAlbany to one another,
       probably.
The teams clashed every year in the America East championship
game from Joe Spallina’s first year on the Island in 2012 to
2021. UAlbany took the first meeting, but Stony Brook won the
title (and each regular-season meeting) thereafter — a streak of
16 games, including the most recent clash in 2022. They probably
would’ve met in the 2022 America East title game, but Stony
Brook announced its departure to the CAA earlier in the year,
and every conference member institution, including UAlbany,
voted to bar them from competing in spring tournaments. The
Great Danes lost to Vermont (but won the AE in 2023 at long
last), and Stony Brook made the NCAA tournament as an at-large.
The Great Danes enter the game searching for their first win,
having lost to Syracuse, Holy Cross and Harvard. Stony Brook,
meanwhile, has wins over Bryant and Villanova. It doesn’t read
well on paper, but if you know and have experienced the history
between these two rivals, it’s one to watch.
