In 2012 we only had an 8k person stadium and FBS schools at the
time required average rolling attendance of 15k+. It was
mentioned on this board in the past that building the 20k person
stadium wouldn't pass a traffic feasibility study, thus
requiring major infrastructure changes. It just wasn't really an
       option at the time.
I haven't listened to the interview, but I doubt we really had
an offer as a much a feeler, and that this is classic Fiore
       puffery

It's fantasy to think that if SBU had ever gone FBS it would be
any more successful than UMass has been. The location and
demographics far out on Long Island don't provide the foundation
       for FBS success.

agree with both- was just wondering why this didnt come up every
single team we discussed FBS invitations. good discussion here.

umass is a cautionary tale and we have a lot in common- in fact,
in a lot of ways we have it harder than they do. i could make
the same argument for uconn but i feel like they've found a bit
more success- though, at what cost.

Puffery? Watch the interview because he was open on a lot of
things. I guess you are denying he was an AD that got big things
done or was that puffery. my point is if there is no support or
little support and the presidents and higher ups are happy with
how things are going, its a bad look to fans. there were a lot
of things to get excited about when he was here and that isnt
the case anymore so they should just go d3 and get it over with.

Wow. I miss this guy so much. I always think what would've
happened if Fiore never left, if he had never screwed up
       What a great interview.

What provides the the foundation for FBS success in your
opinion. In pretty much every way, Stony Brook is better
positioned than UMass. Is the problem for Stony Brook that it's
too close too NYC? Then why does Rutgers work (Rutgers should
always be aspiration). If we're too far, I'll point out that
suffolk county has 1.5 million people and 650 people per sq foot
       - this is twice the population density of UMass's metro area.
       The demographics are fine.

Fiore famously said, and was mocked mercilessly for, claiming
Stony Brook would be the Evil Empire of the America East. He
never won a basketball title and never won commissioners cup
while he was AD. He was famous for puffery, and I'm sure
claiming we had a MAC offer while he was AD is another example.
That said, we had some great teams during those years and it was
fun, though cringey at times, to have an AD who talked big.

       more than fair.
on the umass comparison- i'll add that the population count is
not all equal. people outside of the NYC care more about
sports- college in particular. there's something about the
island (even brooklyn/queens) that the folks really are
disaffected. too much distraction. thus, 2m people in the area
is just more disaffected people. id focus on quality; not
       quantity.
umass had some bball success (a while back!) and other sports
have done ok. it has a vibrant campus, otherwise it wouldnt be
called zoomass. ive been about 4-5 times and spent a total of a
few weeks there. academics are solid. their facilities arent
great- but rewind to our pre-AE days and our facilities wouldnt
pass at stony brook high school.
i have the sense that rutgers is sinking in debt or at least has
leaned on donors and its large student body to fund what is now
an average football program. those stadium expansions at SHI
are NOT cheap! PS rutgers also has a vibrant campus that's more
interested in sports than our student/local body. i know some
coaches there and many, many alums, and get down there every few
       months or so.

Interesting interview. I got the impression that Fiore was a
real go-getter but a guy who was willing to bend the rules,
while SH takes a much more conservative approach overall. I
spoke with Fiore several times and he was an ABC (Always Be
Closing) guy, always asking for $. He was aggressive and his
attitude and foresight (whether grandiose or not) was somewhat
infectious. If he hadn’t been dismissed, I think he would have
been recruited away many times over by now. I think he was an
asset to get us to the next level, although from what I hear, a
lot of his employees would disagree with that, and felt that he
       created an intimidating culture.

Nice interview. It's obvious that he's bitter about how things
unraveled for him. I guess we'll never know the full extent of
his "misconduct" and the settlement with the university. I felt
that 2012-2013 would have been the end of his tenure at Stony
Brook regardless (other schools were heavily recruiting him) and
it's fascinating to think what could have been if we accepted
the offer to join the MAAC as he says.
Anyway as of now- I don't see us leaving the CAA anytime soon.
And I don't see anything happening on the athletics front for a
long time unless we bring in a new president that makes it a
priority. But the enthusiasm on campus is clearly lacking. The
attendance was extremely poor last year.

He was trying to leave in 2013, but he already was enough of a
personality concern that both Rutgers and Princeton turned him
down even before the settlement happened. Fiore talked a lot and
made his fair share of empty promises just like Heilbron, so
there's reason to be skeptical and not just take everything he
says at face value, but ultimately he was more effective than
Heilbron has been, and he could back up his talk more. Though
his pride was eventually his fall, and the fact that he hasn't
gotten any job in college sports within the last 10 years
suggests that he's just too toxic to be associated with, which
sucks because he did a lot for us before he unraveled.
