Richmond Departing CAA Football to go to Patriot League Football
By: Wolffan Date: May 16, 2024, 6:17 am
---------------------------------------------------------
Interesting decision for Richmond, one of the premier remaining
CAA football programs, to head to the academic-focused Patriot
League. This follows on the heels of JMU and Delaware in terms
of CAA departures. Word is they believe the recent CAA comings
and goings have resulted in a less optimal 'fit' for Richmond
football. Certainly seems to be a step down in terms of
competition (and at-large bids) but Holy Cross and Fordham have
build themselves into pretty solid FCS programs currently and
Colgate, Lafayette, and Lehigh have had their moments.
Of course, this puts eyes on Villanova (another private
academic-type CAA football-only school) who already routinely
plays a couple of Patriot League teams a year and whose
president may not mind being in a football league with Holy
Cross, Fordham, Georgetown...

Did the league really take that big of a hit with the additions
of Hampton, Monmouth, Elon, Campbell, North Carolina A&T State
University, Bryant, and us along with the loss of Delaware and
Richmond?
Strange decision though for Richmond not to go FBS and leave for
another FCS league. There must be financial incentives that we
don't know about?
I think the hit to CAA overblown and the league will recover
just fine but we shall see.

Not strange considering UR enrollment is less than 4K. I’m
unaware of other schools that small having an FBS program. As
for whether the CAA has recently taken a big hit, I’d say
dropping to fourth in the FCS suggests that.

[/quote] It seems Richmond was done with CAA football despite
Richmond's football success (7-1 conference record) and either
heading to SoCon or Patriot League. Don't know the specific
reasons they were done with CAA football or why PL ultimately
got the nod.

i dont know much as an outsider but my guess is- they're getting
out while the getting is good.
with NIL, transfer portal, covid eligibility, conference
shuffle, and social media, even the mid-level D1 programs just
cannot compete with the P5. the rich are getting richer and to
stay afloat, you have to spend even more and yet fall farther
behind.
richmond is a small enrollment in a state where there are many
public institutions that are equal or better on many levels.
and much bigger and more well known with more resources.
its like when SJU/hof dropped football. or hartford dropped a
division. times are tough; this list above makes it tougher.

The CAA has been guted losing JMU, Delaware and Richmond. those
teams were premier CAA football teams. Theyll probably lose at
least two more in the next 24 months. why are schools from the
north playing schools in the south? thats a lot of travel money.

Who would be surprised to see villanova leave in a year or so
and follow richmond to the patriot? Not me the caa is slowing
falling apart but when you look back in five years it wont have
been slowly falling if Villanova and others leave. right now i
see charleston leaving as soon as a year or so and VN not far
behind them. the conference cant get its act together and the
north south south north travel budgets are a burden.
