UNH Beating Maine yesterday was a killer because it meant both
of us were 8-4 and they had the head to head. They were clearly
only going to give the CAA 4 teams and not 5. I thought maybe
the committee would get sentimental and give us help because of
the 0-10 last year? But alas
If UNH loses, I think we take their spot.
Which brings to mind again: HOW DO YOU LOSE A GAME WHEN YOU HAVE
A 20-POINT LEAD IN THE FOURTH QUARTER? Holy hell.
It's football that's how you lose a game like that. our sos was
bad. we didn't deserve to make the playoff but had a very good
season. lets hope a new coach can do it again and build on what
Cosh did this year if he leaves and I think it could likely
happen.

It's a shame that the defense had a total meltdown their last 5
quarters of play, but perhaps our achilles heal was finally
exposed. No one in their right mind expected an 0-10 to go to
an 8-4, in a year with a rookie coach, and less than a full year
for him to recruit. So hats off to Cosh for making that
improbable turnaround. Still, it hurts blowing that 4th quarter
30-10 lead, which as it turned out, was the nail in the coffin.
I think a playoff appearance would have sealed the fate of Cosh
getting poached, but I expect him to be back for 1 more year
now. Of course, you need to strike while the iron is hot, so if
he does get a legitimate upgrade offer, he could bolt,
especially since he really has no familial ties to Long Island.
No one could blame him for that.

The defense sucked against the pass and the players were totally
exhausted. Terrible decision making to not have more subs, other
than the d-line. Plenty of opportunities to get others ready,
even for a series, and no reason to play a majority of the
starters (on both sides of the ball) on special teams as well.
What's the point of having all these quality players on the team
and using 40-45 all season.

And not naming names, but if you watch the 4th qtr against NH
and the entire game against MTH, you will see who was awful and
if you look back during the other games, you will see the same
nonsense and mistakes as well. That blame goes on the
d-coordinator, who I think is the one to blame for this entire
late-season collapse, starting with the Bryant game.

Watching the U Mass opening because hes a possible candidate for
that job and the other names being talked about arent big
competition for him and they will play in the MAC in football
next year. You heard it here first.

There is also a coordinator position being talked about that
could work out at a bigger program. U Mass season is over next
week after U Conn game. It could be a good place for him. he
would probably make 1000000 a year and get back in the MAC as a
head coach. SB can't beat that.

Stony Brook football program has come a long way in first season
under Billy Cosh
HTML https://www.newsday.com/sports/college/stony-brook/billy-cosh-stony-brook-football-e6utnufz
The foundation has been poured. It has settled. And now
the task for Stony Brook athletic director Shawn Heilbron and
football coach Billy Cosh is to build the football program upon
the bedrock that was laid in the course of the 2024 season.
It is an undertaking Heilbron is anticipating with equal doses
of enthusiasm and eagerness, which are fully justified.
“The program has never been stronger,” Heilbron told Newsday in
a wide-ranging phone interview Thursday afternoon. “We’re in
such a great place.”
The discussion centered around the state of the football program
ahead of its regular-season finale, a 55-47 loss to Monmouth on
Saturday at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium.
Although Tyler Knoop threw for 408 yards and three touchdowns,
No. 20 Stony Brook (8-4, 5-3) ended its season with consecutive
losses. The senior day defeat on a cold, blustery afternoon was
an unfortunate end to a week that began with Cosh being named
the 2024 AFCA Region 1 Coach of the Year in the Football
Championship Subdivision (FCS).
After the game, Cosh and Knoop made arguments for Stony Brook to
be one of the 24 teams that will comprise the FCS playoff field.
“I’d like to believe we’ve done enough, but at the end of the
day, we had two games at the end of the season and had to win
one and we didn’t get the job done,” Knoop said when asked if he
thinks Stony Brook deserves a postseason berth. “Ultimately we
had the opportunity to control our fate and we didn’t. So at the
end of the day, it’s their choice.”
The field will include 10 conference winners. The remaining 14
teams will be selected by a committee and announced on Sunday.
The Seawolves last appeared in the playoffs on Nov. 24, 2018,
suffering a 28-14 loss to Southeast Missouri State. The last
time Stony Brook hosted a playoff game was Nov. 25, 2017, a
59-29 win over Lehigh.
“I think we’re a really good outfit,” Cosh said. “I know that
for sure. I know if we keep playing, we can prove that to
people.”
So even though the Seawolves missed out on a chance to determine
their fate, their 2024 season has been a success. Especially
when factoring in that at this time one year ago, the school had
fired longtime coach Chuck Priore after an 0-10 season.
“When the decision was made to go in a different direction, we
just needed to build confidence back within our locker room
first but then within our fan base,” Heilbron said. “We were
clearly in a tough place at the end of last season, but we
weren’t far off from being able to turn it around quickly, which
is why I felt that with the right coach, we could do just that.”
A coaching search began in earnest, and exactly 31 days after
the program announced it had parted ways with Priore, Stony
Brook announced that it had hired Cosh.
“He had a vision for what Stony Brook football would look like.
He was very specific and very detailed,” Heilbron said. “What he
was able to do was very, very specifically explain how he was
going to do it, step by step.
“ . . . He has more than lived up to it. Everything
he said he was going to do, he has done, and it’s been awesome
to see it come from those first conversations into reality.”
Cosh has created renewed interest in the program from
prospective recruits, potential season-ticket holders and those
willing to donate money, according to Heilbron.
All are signs of a program on an upward trajectory.
Heilbron recognizes that he and Cosh are entrusted with making
sure the enterprise remains on track, because the goal is
sustainability.
“We’ve got to keep working at it,” Heilbron said. “By no means
do we want this to be a one-season success story. We’re trying
to relaunch this program, and it wasn’t just for this one year.
It’s for the long haul.”

How Billy Cosh flipped Stony Brook’s football program around in
1 year
HTML https://greaterlongisland.com/how-billy-cosh-flipped-stony-brooks-football-program-around-in-1-year/
A true Hollywood-style story is unfolding right here on Long
Island.
And it’s all happening under first-year head coach Billy Cosh,
who admits even he’s a bit surprised by the rapid turnaround.
“A little bit, yeah,” said Cosh. “When I first started, it was
definitely a challenge. We had a lot of things we had to change
to get better at. That’s why we coach and that’s why we do the
things we do. Credit to the players — they bought in quickly.”
It turned out to be not just a good hire — but a fantastic one.
“I’m over the moon with the job that Billy has done since he
came to Stony Brook,” said Heilbron. “There was no question in
my mind that he would be successful given the vision that he
shared with me during the interview process. I couldn’t have
asked for more from him in his first year.”
“Honored and humbled are the two words,” said Cosh. “There are a
lot of great coaches on that list. Our staff does a tremendous
job teaching, and more importantly, our players make it come to
life. We’ve come a long way since December as an organization
and still have a long way to go.”
The tone for this remarkable season was set during training
camp.
“Our players understood the standard that was set and started to
take ownership of it,” said Cosh. “We also became closer,
realizing that individuals play, but teams win.”
It’s been a long time since a Long Island college football
program has enjoyed success at the Division I level.
But now, thanks to Stony Brook, Division I football is thriving
on Long Island once again. And the story is far from over.
“When I came to Stony Brook in 2014, I talked about how
important football was to Stony Brook, and I still believe that
with every fiber of my being,” said Heilbron. “Winning is
critical toward building a fan base and proving that college
football can thrive on Long Island. There’s a strong football
culture in this region that we’re proud to help elevate.”
“These guys deserve this moment,” said Cosh. “To play meaningful
football in November is as good as it gets. They stayed. They
could have left, but they trusted our staff and our vision. Our
players will honor these guys by playing hard and doing the
little things correctly.”
For years, Stony Brook football struggled. But under new head
coach Billy Cosh, the program has turned things around in a way
few could have imagined.
