well putting the obvious flaws in the rankings aside- that was
confirmed last year i think- the good news is that ford & co.
have proven how to adjust the roster yearly (the new normal),
AND that they can coach on gameday through the playoffs. they
were a clear outperform, i think. we were literally seconds
away from a bid when clearly outmatched.
and we did it with a mix of transfers, recruits, players coming
off injuries, grad students, etc. to me that's important here-
how to coach in the post-pandemic environment. the staff proved
to be better at this than before!
and that's something to give us hope, i think. GO SB

Also of note, we'll start the year as the 17th ranked conference
per KenPom, although the climb to 16 is steeper than the drop
all the way to #22. The America East, powered by two teams
ranked higher than Towson, comes in at #20.
I was surprised to see that both the CAA and AE are ahead of
Jeff Boals and Co. in the MAC, although Ohio is the clear
       favorite there.

ICYMI: CAA media day goes from 10-1 today. Geno's on at 11:10.
We'll also hear about the preseason all-CAA honors. I'm guessing
Brzovic gets the nod for POY. For us, I suppose Octave is a
consideration for second or third team. It's more difficult to
predict when there are so few incumbents.
McCorvey leads off the women's portion at 1:05.

Wow. No love for any transfers. All returnees on the preseason
teams, led by Brzovic. He's joined on the first team by Gabe
Dorsey (W&M), Mullen (Hampton), Glasper (A&T) and Tejada
(Towson). That is one unsuccessful first team. W&M, Hampton and
A&T have done nothing but lose in recent years.
       Octave was an honorable mention.
Coaches poll has us ninth, with Towson taking the top spot.

       CAA Media Day:
-Ford got the team back on track after the previous injury-laden
       season
-9 new players; Octave looking good, playing many positions
-given the transfer era, momentum isnt what it used to be; teams
can turnaround quickly, happened to us last year
-key contributors need to step up and produce; they did it at
times last year but we were senior-heavy
-snoddy can do it all, great in the boards

Who do we think is going to play pg for the team this year? The
only true pg imo is freshman Collin O'Connor but I don't expect
a freshman to win a starting job. Can they do it by committee
and play a back court of Frey, Luster, Octave with Snoddy and
       Wight up front?

The freshman O'Connor is going to get a nice run of minutes
according to everything they are saying. Octave without a doubt
       is the starting PG tho

Based upon his resume, I would expect Woodard to start over
       Frey.

Stony Brook men’s basketball’s roster reconstruction features
       trio of JUCO stars
  HTML https://sbstatesman.com/130440/sports/stony-brook-mens-basketballs-roster-reconstruction-features-trio-of-juco-stars/
       [quote]
Following the 2023-24 campaign, Stony Brook lost 80.8% (59.4 out
of 73.5 points per game) of its scoring just among those five
players; that figure not even accounting for the departures of
guards Kaiden Space and Ra’Sean Frederick, as well as center
       Rocco Muratori.
To address these significant losses and ensure immediate
competitiveness, Ford revisited a strategy that had proven
successful before: leveraging the transfer portal.
Between the 2021-22 and 2022-23 seasons, 11 players departed
from the program, prompting Ford to recruit Clarke, Noll and
Fitzmorris from the portal. Although Fitzmorris was the only one
from the trio to enjoy a healthy season, they ultimately played
together the following year, with Maidoh and forward Andre
Snoddy by their side — both of whom were also brought in as
       transfers before the last campaign.
For this season, the Seawolves’ roster features five transfers:
guards Joe Octave and C.J. Luster II along with forwards Ben
Wight, Nick Woodard and Jeremiah Nyarko.
Naturally, Octave and Wight — who transferred in from Division
I’s Holy Cross and Toledo, respectively — have drawn the most
attention from this class of transfers. However, the extent of
Stony Brook’s success this year may ultimately hinge on the
contributions of Luster II, Woodard and Nyarko.
“There’s a lot of JUCO-level players that are Division I
players,” Luster II said in an interview with The Statesman. “In
a sense, you’re playing other Division I players every single
       night.”
Luster II’s swift acclimation to the highest level of collegiate
basketball, bolstered by his previous experience, was evident
during Stony Brook’s scrimmage against Manhattan. In an 82-73
Seawolves win, he led the team with 25 points.
More standout performances such as that one from Luster II could
be expected throughout the year, as he is anticipated to take on
ball-handling responsibilities for Stony Brook, alongside Octave
and returning guards Sabry Philip and Toby Onyekonwu.
“We have a team that has a lot of depth to it,” Luster II said.
“We can play many different ways. We can play inside-out,
outside-in. We can shoot the ball.”
“JUCO is a place where real grind happens,” Woodard said.
“People don’t put enough emphasis on the grind that JUCO really
is. Not having access to recovery, not having access to other
coaches. People [say] it’s a waste of time because of that
stuff, but, in reality, the ones that come out are the ones who
put that extra work in when they don’t necessarily have the
       tools and the intangibles.”
Nyarko first played for St. John Bosco before transferring to
Sierra Canyon, the school where Bronny James, the son of NBA
player LeBron James, also played, as well as a plethora of
       highly-touted recruits over the years.
“I think I’ve proven that I can play offense,” Nyarko said.
“Right now, I want to focus on the defensive part. I want to
help [by being] a really good shot blocker and rebounder. Do
things that will make the team win games.”
