Geno earned a fan in me after this season. SBU athletics got a
bunch of (fair) criticism the last few years but I feel we are
turning the corner with both our basketball and football
programs. That being said this next season could be ugly given
that we will essentially need to rebuild a backcourt next year.
I'm still a fan of Policelli and am pulling for Charleston in
the tourney but he won't be remembered at SBU anywhere close to
how TSM will be remembered. I'm proud of TSM for sticking it
out- watching him grow into an elite baller over his time at
Stony Brook has been a pleasure. For me, TSM will be remembered
along with Tre Puriefoy, Brian Dougher, Mitchell Beauford and
others who were memorable backcourt players on this squad in the
time I've been following the team.
Let's hope football can have similar success this year!

We have the 2nd-lowest basketball budget in the CAA? How much
NIL does Charleston even have specifically, and how did they get
it, because Geno's comparing it to Gonzaga.
[/quote]
I wonder these things too. Frankly, other than in general or in
theory, I don't know much about how NIL works, other than yes it
seems to be the great new landscape of college sports.
But I wonder specifically what's the difference right now
between SBU and Charleston?
I have a friend who has held AD positions at two always and
current top-10 men's basketball programs, and of course in terms
of resources and how they operate it would not be far off to
compare the Knicks to the Ward Melville boys basketball team
when thinking about SBU and one of those programs. But SBU and
Charleston? What's the divide?
Perhaps a thread for another day, but I have gone to the
SBU-connected 1957 Club web site a few times, read and taken in
what's there, and I still don't get it. It all seems very vague,
and perhaps it needs to be?
And the web site itself, in terms of imagery and aesthetics, is
very hokey to me. I mean, the opening banner is a bunch of empty
seats? Images of generic young people wearing red? Huh?
Is this whole thing a work-in-progress?

The gap between Charleston and us is probably very wide resource
wise. Pat Kelsey makes 1.1 million dollars 500k was secured
through private donations after last year. He got a 150k bonus
for winning the tournament almost half of Geno’s salary. They
are in a beautiful coastal city nearly sell out every game
probably avg 4700 fans we rarely get over 3k. If they are able
to get 500k for the coach from donors could they match that with
NIL? As a mid major with a war chest of 500-600k lot of things
can happen. But I think resources aside Charleston would always
be good because of the location fan support and Pat Kelsey they
play a beautiful selfless brand of basketball. Policelli i will
remember as a largely solid player who was here during a lot of
turmoil and took a huge step his last year. TSM i will remember
as an all time player and you can tell the way Geno talks about
him he thinks so too.

It has been reported Charleston NIL is over a million bucks. I
doubt stony brook is even 90% close to that NIL

If they went to the A10 next year they would be middle of the
pack thats another reason im hopeful for Stony Brook Charleston
will be gone soon so will Delaware.

I don't know where Geno got that figure that we're 13th in the
CAA in budget. Official reported numbers to the Department of
Education for 2022 are below
CAA 2022 Men's basketball expenditures
School
Expenditures
College of Charleston
Northeastern University
Hofstra University
Drexel University
University of Delaware
Stony Brook University
Monmouth University
Towson University
William & Mary
Elon University
University of North Carolina Wilmington
Campbell University
North Carolina A & T State University
Hampton University
I generally like Geno, think he's a great interview, and even
defended his extension at the time, but I thought those comments
were whiny (an untrue). Yes the College Charleston has a huge
advantage in budget and NIL, but that was also essentially Stony
Brook when they were in the AE.

Most of these budgets line up with what you'd expect but kudos
to UNCW for doing a lot with less than the big guys. Would've
expected they'd be near the top. Also yikes to Northeastern.
Maybe their budget is elevated because they have to travel far
to pretty much every other school? Guess it can't be cheap to
operate in the middle of Boston.

Yeah, that's closer to what I would have expected. Maybe he's
referring exclusively to the NIL budget.

great postgame interview from Geno. Good stuff.

he said a concept that i've been proposing... "we got hot at the
right time".
its somewhat better to win 10 games and get hot in march, than
it is to win 23 and lose to a team you already beat . our
history proves that; we've done the latter too many times. did
the former once and it nearly worked.
