I thought A&T was going to be the worst team in America given
all the tumult in the offseason, so when they were sitting at
5-4 halfway through the conference schedule, I had to tip my
cap. Things have taken a turn for the worse for the Aggies,
losers of five straight and seven of the last eight.
I'm not sure what the health status is for Glasper, but the
team's potency took a hit when he left the lineup in their game
against Delaware. He was questionable for both games this week,
so with the five days rest, he could very well suit up against
us. The offense has scuffled as a result, with them scoring
fewer than 60 points in six of the seven games since, including
the last three under 55. If we do see Glasper, he's a lot like
Kam Woods. If he's their best option, I'm not terribly
concerned. Just a little erratic for me. As an aside, I didn't
even realize that Woods is playing at NC State, although he has
       more DNPs than games played.
I do like the kid Shell though. Even though he's not this
prolific scorer/shooter, he's held his own as the team's top
option in Glasper's stead. He just takes care of the ball, can
score in a few different ways, and I had him as bigger than 170
but maybe that's all he is. He's just a nice player who
       competes.
The other thing I like: that Ross is trying to build something
in his first year. This is all assuming everybody stays, but
there's a hint of something with Glasper, Shell, McKie and
Chitkoudis. We have a bunch of 23-year-olds and are sitting at
just .500. They're trying to run this gauntlet with legitimate
kids. They have some growing to do, as the defense has been
lackluster, and they haven't been able to score, particularly
from deep, particularly without Glasper. If you take out his
threes in conference play (23 for 82), the team has made just 50
       of 191 (26.1%).
As far as placement goes in the CAA, it really does feel as
though we're locked into the 7-10 range, and you can maybe even
limit it to the 8-9 contest. Monmouth is a game back of three
teams at 9-5, and of them, Hofstra is the most likely to slide
back as they visit UNC Wilmington and Charleston, who will
likely play hard to the end. The regular season title and likely
NIT berth has to mean something. Best care scenario for us is
18-15 in my opinion, to which all exclaim a collective "meh." I
think it's a totally rational response.
You know what we'll do here. We'll be back in our gym, against a
team with much less firepower, and we'll win by 15. We'll have
guys with stats, undoubtedly some dunks and other highlights,
Heilbron will tweet something, Geno will talk it up in the press
conference. And maybe we pummel W&M on Saturday too. But it's
meaningless. I'm worried about what we do against good teams, at
our place or theirs, late in the game, and late in the game late
in the season. Today I read a noteworthy quip that came from
Hubie Brown: "The notoriety of the coach is directly
proportional to his team’s execution under pressure." We keep
waiting for something different to happen, but it's more of the
same. The chance to reel in a meaningful seed in the CAAs has
       passed.

2 games in a row we must win, but as you noted, shouldn't have a
major impact on our final standing in the CAA. Also, at 90,
Hubie is still sharp as a tack, and I couldn't agree more with
       that statement.

       nailed it.
the days of 20+ wins in the AE are over. this is what we
wanted. call me when we win a meaningful game.
instead we've done the opposite- folded when the stakes are high
(bingo game). when was the last meaningful game we won? 2016
       vermont?

"Meaningful" big picture, yeah, probably 2016. But there have
been a few nice wins over the years, the one at Rutgers being
most notable, and also when we inexplicably won at South
Carolina. Imagine being a Gamecocks fan and some school named
Stony Brook from the America East comes in and beats you, lol.
It's tough going into big games believing that you're at a
competitive disadvantage on the bench. We've had a few nice Ws
in the Geno era (at Vermont, Hofstra here, UNCW this year), but
oftentimes it feels like we win in spite of the coach rather
       than because of him.

Yeah, I didn't mean to come across as touting those wins a great
deal. We certainly didn't build on them.
But if "meaningful" isn't a win over a high major and your
former coach, then we're really limiting it to the conference
tournament. We haven't so much as made a tournament final since
Pikiell left, and of the three conference semis we made in the
AE, two of those losses came at home.
A spot in the conference semis would feel significant this year,
but of course everything skids to a halt with at least half the
       team moving on.

It really felt like Pikiell making it to the tournament was
finally going to be our breakthrough moment that established us
as mid-major dominants, didn't it? We had so much more to grow
and after it finally happened after the continuous heartache
from 2010-15, it was as if the next guy's trajectory was to go
even higher. Of course, it never happened with Boals, and he
shot his best season in the foot when Ohio called and he
half-assed the Binghamton playoff game. With each passing year,
it looks more like Pikiell was the peak instead of the
       continuation of gradual upward movement.
Even at his best, the Geno years have just been average. He's
not the guy, and this deep into his coaching career, I don't
think he ever will be the guy. He's a good talker during
interviews and not antagonistic with the fanbase and media the
way that Priore was, but the school needs better than the
       results he's given.

yes, and, we just arent at the level where sustainability is a
given. let's see what, for example, michigan football does by
losing a national championship coach. when that happens to mid
majors, we lose the coach, and the rich get richer.
in that light- schools like ours are a stepping stone. which
means you need other reasons to keep staff (and players) around.
and we dont do that, other than a low price tag (every school
is good, has facilities, etc.). this is our only true wedge.
which means- we get the poorest, the in-staters, the kids with
no choice to go anywhere else. we are the literal backup
       school.
if it's helpful- and yes this is admittedly limited to lacrosse-
look at where kids commit or visit when on our radar.

With a President that has done a great job with academic ranking
(we're 58th in the US now), there seems to be very little
interest in Sports coming out of the executive office. Could be
a money thing, or just general apathy towards sports emphasis.
The 2 flagship sports that will give SBU the most notoriety
(football and men's Bball) have been floundering for years.
Although I do believe that Geno should have gotten a pass for
last year with all the injuries, I'm afraid that he got a
perma-pass for us moving into the CAA due to its conference
superior strength - no doubt in my mind that the CAA is a much
stronger league overall, than the AE. Geno did a solid job of
recruiting from the portal, and with the aid of last year's
injuries, had a nice veteran team this year. To be a .500 team
with this bunch, is definitely a huge disappointment. I defer
to Hubie Brown on the reason we haven't met expectations this
year. With all of the graduations this year and no guarantee
that the underclassmen will stick around, I cannot even fathom
how tough next year will be. Like @Checkmate alluded to,
anything less than making the semis in this year's tournament,
will be viewed as a failure.

Agree with many of the sentiments above, but not completely.
       1. I don't see the admin as strongly supportive of athletics to
the level that Kenny and Stanley were. However, at least they're
not destructive, like Hofstra's Rabinowitz was to Football
there. You want an anti-athletic admin, just take a quick glance
his way. I frankly just don't think we understand how damaging
COVID was to SBU's finances as a State institution. I'm giving
them a little more time here. I personally think that there may
be a real plan to take us FBS, justifying a need to keep costs
down now. Geno is not a complete coaching bust and, in contrast
to Priore, can recruit, has community credibility and is a
likeable person. If I had a 10 year plan that needed to keep
costs down now, I'd resign him every time.
       2. Pikiell was a great coach. However, I NEVER considered him a
good X's and O's guy. He had some really, really bad losses to
go with some incredible high flying wins. Rutgers, South
Carolina, and my favorite ruining the up to that point unbeaten
season for #13 U Washington pair with inexplicable losses to
very low majors and a complete inability to close on the "big
game". Peter Hooley still makes me cringe years later. Pikiell
won his final SBU game because Warney decided to win it for him.
I take nothing from Steve, I still think he was a solid coach
and recruiter and a great person. But let's not hero worship
thinking that he was Coach K.
       3. We are and never were mid major dominants, even after the
conference championship. I don't think we are entirely gripping
how historically low major the AEC was. True mid majors like the
A-10, MVC and WCC are head and shoulders above us. The CAA is an
interesting mix between some real dregs like Hampton, programs
working to elevate like Campbell and NC A&T who have real
verticals, and solid mid majors like UNCW and Charleston. It is
a MUCH stronger league than the AEC, and Delaware leaving
doesn't really change that. However, it is STILL not even close
       to the MVC or A-10.
       4. This is a solid team, but I don't really see them as markedly
better as ones we've had before. I personally thought that 2019
had a really good squad. There's a discipline issue, but before
you say it, Pikiell had one for many of his teams too.
       5. One last important thing. I took a look at the list of CAA
basketball champions. The first time one of the AEC defectors
came onto the list is 2014 (Delaware). It took Hofstra till
2020. Towson has never won. We really have to chill about being
major conference players in year 2. I would be happy with a >
0.500 conference record and a couple of tournament wins. That's
progress to me. Geno's biggest proving ground for me will be how
he reloads this team. That will matter.
