but there's some bad magic in our name.

Worst loss in 5 years. This team doesn’t know how to finish
period. Maidoh the goat again, on a ridiculous foul late, off of
a timeout. What is Geno telling them in the huddle there?

The Maidoh foul didn't end up mattering in the end, really, but
UGH. I was upset when Hofstra went for the quick 2 instead of
the 3 because I knew we didn't have enough fouls, and sure
enough, the 80% FT shooter misses the front end of the one and
one and Thomas' terrible-looking shot while doubled goes in. You
have to work hard to blow a 3-point lead with 15 seconds left.
At that point, on one possession the worst thing that can happen
is the game gets sent to OT. Really, we shouldn't have even been
in the close-game scenario with how we outplayed them in the
first half.

I forgot that Hofstra missed the and-1, but nonetheless, our end
game is pitiful. Poor coaching, poor execution. This caliber of
team should be better than their record. They’ll finish 6-12 or
7-11 in conference at best. Geno ain’t the guy. We should have
swept Hofstra this year.

It’s almost comical at this point. They easily had over a 90%
chance of winning in the final minute as measured by all
metrics. This team is maddening. I would rather get blown than
continue to choke away games like this over and over again in
conference play. Our inability to finish games in the final
minute that we dominate over and over is sickening honestly.

Funny ... I was just wondering if there had been a more
gut-punching loss since then. What are the contenders? For
blowouts, I think about the horrible showing against Binghamton
in the AE tournament and the infamous Wagner loss. We've been
embarrassed by Hofstra before. We've had our share of collapses,
perhaps the most notable being the loss at South Florida in the
CBI after Boals skipped town. But in terms of soul-crushing
losses, geez, this was it for me. Miss the 1-and-1 and then your
archrival sinks you with an awkward wrong-footed shot when he
was double-teamed, finishing the season sweep? Just terrible.
What a shame to have Noll hit the three to put us ahead and
Clarke to knock down the nice stepback two, we have Carlos
trapped in the corner (!) before the timeout, and then of course
Hofstra gets the and-1 opportunity with Fritz. Clarke leaked out
to deny Thomas, and it freed up the cutter. I gotta see how
Maidoh lost him. Anything but anything under the hoop for
heaven's sake. Fitz make two enormous free throws and we give
the two right back. Then the finish.
We've now been outscored by 10 or more points in the second half
of four of our five CAA losses – Hofstra x 2, Charleston and
Delaware.
Was there a worse shot attempt in Stony Brook history than
Noll's hook shot up 67-66? I think he dribbled around like he
was on skates on the next possession too. Just maddening that
that's what we're doing – ever, never mind in a big game.
Meanwhile, Carlos carved us up yet again.
Points in the paint: 6. We had 34 in the game at our place. I
guess they'll find a way to beat us no matter which way we draw
it up.
Hey, I think there's a chance we go 5-2 or even 6-1 heading into
what will be a tough final weekend. I really think 4-3 is the
worst we do. But it doesn't hide the fact that we've given away
too many games and tried to give away too many others. Just a
horrible loss tonight.

Somehow we still went up +8 in KenPom to exactly #200. Our first
time in the top 200 since we were #188 before that Wagner game.
Noll has made so many clutch shots this year that you want to
just let him be as daring as he wants to be, but yeah that had
me shaking my head. Completely forgot about it in the blur of
what transpired after. Fitz's offensive rebound which let us
kill 20 more seconds off the clock was so huge, and then none of
it ended up mattering.
Everything had to go as wrong as possible for us to lose that
game, needing to defend one possession with a 3-point lead with
15 seconds left. Really, what were the odds that the 80% FT
shooter would miss the 1-and-1? And then also that Carlos' drive
right before gave them *just* enough time to move the ball for
Thomas' shot at the end. If he hesitated one more second or
tried to pass it out, Thomas wouldn't have gotten his final shot
off even with the missed FT.

Went to the game tonight. Had a nice Stony Brook turnout. Tough
to watch the same script unfold as a lot of these conference
games. Feels like weve settled into a nice rhythm with our
starters but could use maybe another guy in the rotation to keep
the guys legs fresh for the second half. Carlos is such a good
point guard for hofstra, 10 assists 0 turnovers. We’re
definitely going to be dangerous down the stretch but do we have
enough to win the tourney? TBD.
