I did not have us both entering Monday's game at 2-3 in
conference play, certainly not Hofstra, but here we are.
When we weren't conference foes, we talked about these games
being for bragging rights on Long Island and, further out on the
limb, a potential edge in recruiting (although conference
affiliation would always win out IMO). Hofstra, generally, beat
us, and when we did win, it was more a feather in our caps than
anything substantial. To gear up for the conference schedule,
there's an exhibition/scrimmage element to all OOC games,
particularly for mid-majors with limited to non-existent
at-large odds. Now though, we're on equal footing with Hofstra
and these games have a whole new meaning, with seeding and byes
at stake, and of course they happen twice. And maybe, if a
recruit is now legitimately torn between the two schools, who
wins these games may actually be a factor.
They've been competitive more often than they haven't, but we're
still just 5-20 against Hofstra all-time.
I'd love to know the last time we faced a team whose top two
scorers combined for 40-plus a game. What a duo. And kudos to
Dubar for raising his game a level or two where he may actually
be a 1B to Thomas and not just a really really good second guy.
He's averaging 19 and 10 so far in conference play, and is
coming off a 27 and 10 performance against Hampton in a game
that Hofstra was down 18 and facing a 1-4 start. Can't believe
they came all the way back, even if Hampton is supposed to
stink. It will be difficult to shut down either Thomas or Dubar,
but there's a big dropoff after that offensively. Sixty percent
of their shot attempts have come from Thomas/Dubar in conference
play, and it's 79 percent if you include Carlos; by contrast,
the TSM/Clarke duo have accounted for 45 percent of ours, and
our top five take just over 80 percent of the attempts.
Thomas is unquestionably a weapon and maybe he drops 30 on us,
but he's purely a shooter/scorer IMO. Just not enough activity
on the defensive end, and it's really noticeable when you see
Dubar flying in for rebounds and Carlos zipping around. Thomas
just seems disinterested or an observer – on both ends – too
often for me TBH. Nevertheless (offensively) he needs 20 points
to reach 2,000 for his career, and 21 to hit 1,000 for his
tenure at Hofstra. That first number is pretty special. His
coach, Speedy Claxton, topped 2,000 in just 119 games back in
the late 90s and 2000 (Monday will be #134 for Thomas).
Two knocks on Hofstra as a team: They're more than minus-three
on the glass, and what was once a team that killed people at the
line has gone in the opposite direction, averaging just 13
       attempts a game.
Concerning stat: We have just 10 three-pointers in our last
three games, and over that stretch we're shooting it at just 20
       percent (10 for 50). In the COVID-shortened 2020-21 season,
there was a three-game span where we hit only nine threes. Other
than that though, it's really hard to find periods of three
games in conference play where we didn't have 20 or more
three-point makes. Of particular note, Frey has only taken eight
threes in our five conference games, this is after averaging
more than five a game during the non-conference slate. For me,
we have to be somewhere in the middle, and I'd prefer closer to
the latter. We need his scoring off the bench. Let's see if this
stretch of home games elicits some more looks for him.
We can point to the strength of schedule to this point, with
four road games behind us already, but ... we had double-digit
leads against Charleston and Delaware. And then just kind of hit
a skid and gave the game away. And we were right there with
Towson. Three very good opponents, but still, there's a parallel
       universe where we're 5-0. That's not how things work – it's rare
to win every one-score game in football – but man, to be 2-3,
having to climb all these teams to get a coveted tournament bye,
when you could (should?) have been FIVE AND OH really sucks.
I'm really curious what kind of crowd comes out for this 9pm
game. Taking young kids there that late on a school night is
tough. Midnight bedtime? [emoji42] 7pm tip would've been
terrific. Whatever the time is, it's great to be back home.
It'll probably be closer than my crummy Guess the Line guess.
We're in a good spot to compete with these guys.

I truly hope the students start showing up to these games. It's
been pathetic so far. They are offering a free TV so maybe that
       helps!!

First day of classes for the spring semester is on Monday, but
man, a 9 pm start? Don't think we've had one that late in a long
       time, if ever.

We can beat hofstra tbh we should as checkmate highlighted we
could be 5-0. 9pm tip will either be a dud or great gonna be
real late for kids who have school but good for students if we
have any we are top half attendance the red out last year got us
a win against Drexel. We can sniff a 4 seed if we finish games.
Geno still on hot seat imo

Super excited for the game. I honestly really like this team.
This athletic department is a joke for promotions. The students
aren’t going to be running to the arena for a 43 inch tv. Sorry
they’re not. However if they offer food i bet they get a better
turn out. The cheerleaders and dance team should be walking
around Monday telling all the students to come out. Where’s the
emails? The tweets? Go back to last year vs Drexel and we got
all of that. You couldn’t go onto the athletic website without a
pop up coming about the game. Not this time. It’s time for the
athletic dept to wake up and promote.

Giveaways are a good concept – I’m glad they’re at least trying.
It’s a start. But a 43-inch lesser brand TV is not going to move
the needle. They’re at least thinking this way. Even with the
mid-game contests, it feels small time. “Make 10 threes in a
row, get a $10 gift card!” And they throw out like five t-shirts
a game. These contests should be AWESOME and everything’s just
       weird.
We need somebody out there with a mike again.

I mean, it's literally THE Hofstra game, kids shouldn't need a
TV for this game, the dept. should be hammering home everywhere
the fact that it's the Hofstra game because Stony Brook kids
hate Hofstra and they should naturally want to show up because
it's our only true rivalry we have right now.

How about going back to the FREE tuition for a semester
give-away to one lucky student ticket? OR how about 10 random
students shooting from mid-court during halftime, for free
tuition for a year? How about the athletic department sending
their interns to knock on dorm doors the day of games, dragging
them out by their ears? How about advertising in the local
periodicals (Newsday has been of zero help)?
Yes, it does seem like the athletic department has fallen asleep
at the wheel. It takes a leader at the top to put these ideas
in motion. I'm sure the players would like to play in front of
3,000 fans, rather than the 500-1,000 we've been getting.
Probably worth and extra 1-2 wins per year.
If I were 20 years younger, I'd apply for a ra-ra job there (or
volunteer), and turn the attendance ship around in 1 semester.
So many things that can be done on this front..

I flipped over to watch some of the UNCW Charleston game
yesterday and that atmosphere was incredible how do we emulate
that well I think students set the tone and ours are apathetic.

Looking forward to going to the game tomorrow. First home game
I’ve been to this season. Hoping for a decent turnout from
students and fans. Will report back on the coach cosh meet and
       greet.
