Even though we sit here at 1-2, I think what the last week has
told us is that these guys have a chance to win every game on
the schedule. We could be 3-0; who'd have thought that? Only one
of our losses has come against teams not in the top 50th
percentile or better. Granted, we could be looking at 4-5 or 3-6
or even 2-7 halfway through the conference slate, but if things
go right, we could also be above .500 heading into the kinder,
softer latter half of the season.
This is one of those games we have to have if we have any
designs on getting a first-round bye in the CAAs – which we'll
have a better idea about in a few weeks once we're through this
gauntlet. Per KenPom, we're still projected to go just 8-10 in
conference, and just 15-16 overall. Not terrific. But I feel
like we all feel better about our prospects, at least for this
season. We've played tough. And it's tough to win on the road,
but this is one we can get.
Like Geno, Fischer was hired at the start of the 2019-20 season,
and like Geno, with his predecessor's roster, put up 20 wins (21
actually). That remains the high watermark for the both of them.
It's been even bleaker in Williamsburg though, with only 25 wins
over the next three seasons for the Tribe. To my knowledge,
Fischer hasn't been extended and if that's the case then his job
is very very much on the line, but to hopefully keep him from
falling off that cliff, he has W&M off to its best start since
that debut season. He did a nice job in the transfer portal this
offseason, bringing in impact guys with multiple years of
eligibility like Moss (South Florida), Case (Providence) and
Caleb Dorsey (Penn State), who is Gabe's brother as you might
have imagined.
W&M's offense is well ahead of its defense, with a good mix of
guys who can put it in the bucket. Gabe Dorsey was the big name
coming into the season as an all-CAA preseason selection, but
he's pretty one-dimensional offensively, with almost 90 percent
of his shots coming from three-point land. Moss and Case,
though, can put it on the floor and finish, while Lowe's this
hybrid kid that every coach would love to have. He brings lot of
energy, tough underneath, poised with the ball, and just seems
to contribute to the cause whether it's scoring or otherwise.
And then they bring in somebody like Caleb Dorsey, who's being
allowed to spread his wings at W&M after a few non-descript
seasons at Penn State. You see a guy his size and think he's
this banger, but he's a capable ballhandler, passer and shooter.
It's a nice team offensively, albeit one that's heavily
dependent on the three-ball (nearly 48 percent of all FGA). I'm
starting to get a little concerned about teams' efficiency from
deep against us. Opponents making 37 percent of their threes
puts us at 333rd in America. Sometimes you leave a game and say
"hey, they knocked down their shots" but then it feels like
every game and you wonder if it's a systemic issue. I still feel
like we've defended it OK and that that number will come down.
We'll see though.
Defensively, however, William & Mary is lacking if you look at
basically every metric. Every Division I opponent but one has
put up at least 70 points on them. They're weak underneath as
has been the case for a while, which I think will allow our
guards to penetrate and finish – note opponents' 61 percent FG%
at the rim. They lost their top two shot blockers from last year
– Ben Wight to transfer (Toledo, where he's barely playing) and
Noah Collier has been out since November – and that's left them
with just 22 blocks in 16 games, which is next to nothing. We've
seen us be content with running the offense through our bigs,
whether it's them going to work with the back to the basket or
passing out of the post. I can't recall us really doing that
since Warney left. This feels like another opportunity to use
those guys.
In the end, I just like our experience in the backcourt, our
ability to score in a few different ways by a few different
people, and our size underneath, especially on the defensive
end. Feels like a W is right there for us. Hope that's the case.

we have been doing this a lot more this year, to some degree of
success. having maidoh and fitz at the same time helps. we of
course tried this type of lineup with otchere/gueye but they
were seldom in the paint, nor leveraged their size to improve a
shot.

Agree with Knicksbu feels like as much of a must win as a road
conference game in January could be.

I didn't know that it was a 1 pm start until ESPN just hit me
with the surprise notification.
Towson down 28-17 at Northeastern at the half right now.

Geno cannot have Noll/Frey brining ball up. If Clark sits, TO
needs to handle the point.

This play by play guy calling TSM “Stephenson”,
“Stephenson-Moore” and “Stephenson-Tyler” in the flow of a game
is next level. And “Fitzmorris” and “Fitzgibbon” on the same
possession. Amazing.
“Andre Clarke” 🤣

14-6 with 7 minutes left until halftime. Hopefully we can get
another touchdown!

W&M not landing much, and so i suspect they are better than
their score indicates.
10000% agreed with the need for tobyO. especially if W&M 3/4
presses.
color guy super annoying.
