It's so interesting, in the age of transfers, to see what Towson
has going – a sophomore and two first-year guys leading them in
scoring. I'd love to know if there are five teams in America who
can say that. Next year, we lose the majority of our core and
will undoubtedly recruit older guys to try to keep us afloat
alongside TO, Frey and Snoddy. Yet Skerry, if everyone stays (a
big assumption), has this nucleus to build around. May and
Williamson combined for 44 in their best win – a 10-pointer over
UMass – and on Saturday, Tejada hit the buzzer-beating three to
knock off UNC Wilmington, this despite 33 from Trazarien White.
Some of that's out of necessity. Skerry described the offseason
as taxing so no doubt he was busy. Thompson, a wide-bodied and
active big, is the lone holdover from last year's starting
lineup and was twice named to the All-CAA team, and they did
have Radhir Hicks, a nice floor leader, but he's been out since
November. Hicks' absence is one hole that the youngsters have
had to fill, and they anticipated having Marcus Watson, an A&T
transfer, but he's out with a torn ACL.
Towson's point totals in the last 10 games: 39, 67, 48, 81, 89,
93, 65, 97, 43, 67. Somebody make sense of that.
I know May had the big game against UMass, but I don't see him
as this guy who can take over a game, at least on a nightly
basis, a la White, Timberlake from last year's Towson team now
at Kansas, Jameer Nelson, et al. His jumper's really smooth, but
he's somebody who has to be found rather than somebody who finds
his own offense. As their top perimeter threat, it feels like a
good TSM assignment. I thought he was great against Lilly from
Brown.
The three ball is not Towson's game. They've hit 10 in a game
just once BUT ... have only allowed 10 makes once too, and that
was a two-overtime loss to Bryant. This team's going to defend.
This is where Clarke is key, breaking down the defense and
getting buckets himself or creating for others. It's nice to
have a few shooters, including a couple knockdown guys in TSM
and Frey, each of whom is over 40% from deep. Just unheard of
here.
Unsurprising stat: We are 6-2 when we hold our opponents under
50% shooting from the field, 1-5 when we don't. Defend – win!
Don't defend – lose! Yeah, not that interesting.
Here's what this one will come down to: Can we rebound the
basketball? Do we have Snoddy? Because Towson's rebounding
numbers are r i d i c u l o u s. They outrebounded Bryant by 26,
UMBC by 21 and Wake Forest by 19. They've had 20 or more
offensive rebounds five times this year, and are averaging 16 a
game, good for fourth best in America. Towson has finished in
the top 15 nationally in offensive rebounding seven times in
Skerry's 12 seasons and they're well on their way to adding to
that. Overall, they rank 14th nationally in rebound margin
(+10.3).
TV timeout: Let's give it up for the women, who at 12-1 are 63rd
nationally in NET rankings. Somehow they dropped 11 spots with a
13-point win over UNC Wilmington. Could this be right about that
game? UNCW really played five players all 40 minutes? Not sure
I've ever seen that. I wonder what's up.
I wouldn't have thought this two weeks ago, but I like us in
this one. The Northeastern win was terrific, and we gave C of C
all it could handle. Individually, TSM has been awesome of late
– keep it up! Get him the ball and let him create! Clarke has
been so so good getting to the rim and finishing, picking his
spots from deep, probing, drawing fouls, etc. The Jalen Brunson
comparison isn't a bad one. I'm fine with either of those guys
creating their own offense. Noll is one of the most unorthodox
players that I can remember – I do not support skyhooks! – but
he's produced. I just think having 23 and 24 year old guards
matters when facing relative inexperience. I also think that the
rim protection that Maidoh and Fitz has provided has been such a
difference maker. They've been great at turning away or altering
shots in close, and they're also athletic enough to wander out
to guard shooters. It's been really impressive.
I love our frontcourt athleticism between Snoddy and Maidoh.
Their ability to elevate for rebounds on either end is
unmistakable; they swoop in like hawks. We've been competitive
or better on the glass for 10 games now, and I think we can
continue that. I've liked seeing Maidoh looking for his offense
a little more, and not settling for jumpers. Also, credit to
Geno for managing his minutes well to keep him out of foul
trouble. He's important late in games.

Little life out of Noll in the early going. Good to see.
Checkmate was right, this Towson team can really rebound

the lineup graphic showed our starters:
grad/grad/grad/grad/grad.
noll is having his way under the rim.
all signs are pointing to this being a great game.

Stats can be so funny. 12 minutes into the game and our starters
have zero rebounds. Yet we’re in it.

I thought Towson doesn’t shoot 3’s? Sabry playing meaningfully;
looks like an athlete.

We dared them to shoot the 3 and they just went 7-for-11 to
start. The 13-0 run by them was ugly for us, and then I thought
we did a bad job taking the care of the ball in the final 2
minutes, but somehow we're only down by 5. TSM has not been
given many opportunities.

@Checkmate, I have to stop hitting the Dumb button, when I mean
to got the Agree button. We were outplayed on both ends, yet
only down 5 at the half. Clarke’s early 2 fouls definitely hurt
us. Is it too much to ask to display team fouls and Time outs?

I don’t like the fact that they’re bringing the basket down to
fix the play clock. How do we know that basket height will be
calibrated correctly?

I was thinking the same thing. Never seen anything like this in
a game before.
