Weekend Watch: In Like a Lion Out Like a Lamb?

This week featured a Top 15 matchup between Stony Brook and
Syracuse, setting the tone for yet another shakeup in the
rankings, a weekly theme thus far in the 2024 season. Will there
be more to come before the next round of poll votes?
Johns Hopkins vs Stony Brook, 4 p.m. at the Crown Lacrosse
Classic in Charlotte, N.C.
Stony Brook is 5-0 on after a big team win in overtime at
Syracuse Tuesday night. It was the first ranked opponent the
Seawolves have faced this season after rolling through the first
four games, outscoring opponents 75-31. Preseason All-American
Ellie Masera has been working her magic for Stony Brook with a
team-leading 39 points and 49 draw controls. Teammate Alex Finn,
a graduate transfer from UMass, contributed 32 points. The
Seawolves will face No. 15 Johns Hopkins at a neutral site in
Charlotte, N.C., carrying their momentum from their major win
over Syracuse on Tuesday evening.
Johns Hopkins, which is 6-2, cruised to a midweek 21-3 victory
over Vanderbilt and is carrying a three-game win streak into the
matchup with Stony Brook. Johns Hopkins is led by Ashley Mackin.
Mackin has already surpassed her points total from last year in
just eight games Graduate student and Boston University transfer
Jennifer Barry has been crucial for possession success for the
Blue Jays, pulling in a team-leading 56 draw controls.
Both Johns Hopkins and Stony Brook haven’t faced many ranked
opponents at this point in the season, so this matchup could be
a good gauge of where the programs fall.
Contenders — Ellie Masera, Stony Brook
Speed, quickness, and grit. A great combination of qualities for
the Stony Brook senior, who's off to a roaring start in her
final season. She leads her team in goals (28) and draw controls
(49), and has come up big in the early season for Stony Brook,
picking up a Top 5 win over Syracuse thanks to her game-winning
overtime tally.

TEWAARATON STOCK WATCH: MASERA THE EARLY FAVORITE

New heroes have emerged in each dramatic victory. Stony Brook’s
Ellie Masera has proven to be a problem for any defense that
comes her way.
1. Ellie Masera, M/A, Stony Brook
Masera has kicked off 2024 on an absolute tear. The midfielder
scored a season-high eight goals in the Seawolves’ opener
against Dartmouth and hasn’t looked back, tallying no less than
four goals in every game she’s played. Masera made waves Tuesday
with a crafty, low-angle goal — all while falling down — to
upset Syracuse 13-12 in overtime. That play is representative of
Masera’s offensive firepower, relying on speed and creative
stickwork to bend opponents to her will. She has notched 28
goals, 11 assists and 49 draw controls through five games.

WEEKEND ONE-LINERS: ANOTHER CHANCE FOR MARQUEE WINS

A light mid-week slate highlighted by No. 11 Stony Brook’s
back-and-forth overtime win over No. 5 Syracuse makes weekend
lacrosse a welcome sight.
GAME OF THE WEEK
No. 11 Stony Brook (5-0) at No. 13 Johns Hopkins (6-2) —
Saturday, 4 p.m. in Charlotte, N.C. (Event Live Stream)
Ellie Masera’s overtime heroics gave Stony Brook a signature win
over Syracuse at the Dome, but Hopkins knows a thing (or six)
about tight contests, with of the Jays’ eight games decided by
four goals or fewer.
Brutal. Maybe they should unpin the Syracuse win from the team
twitter home page at this point. That win feels like ancient
history. Scheduling 3 nationally ranked opponents in a 6 day
span (two road contests) probably wasn’t the brightest idea
either. Regardless, this is a senior heavy team that isn’t
walking the walk. All focus is once again on the conference. A
seed in the tourney is out of the question.
