Like the end of the year for a lot of people, with this
basketball team you can look back with some fondness and some
disdain. That three-game win streak? Pretty nice. A 48-12
halftime deficit? No bueno. We did play Yale tough, but also
didn't really get any kind of result we were looking for in the
Cornhusker Invite. Sometimes we showed we could shoot. Other
times we absolutely did not. So mix that all up in a bowl and
       you have a 6-6 team.
That may be all we are: a .500 team. Seven CAA teams are in the
top 200 on KenPom. And based on results, it would be impossible
to argue that we're better than any of them. Monmouth's ahead of
us too, and their results include a win at West Virginia and a
neutral court W over Belmont. So that puts us on the back half
of the conference, which would almost certainly at .500 or worse
       in conference and overall.
But are we actually better than that? Better than .500? And of
course this all ties into Geno's future, which may or may not
have been determined yet. I think at the very beginning, maybe
the first half of the St. John's game, maybe the whole game,
maybe into our tilt with Duquesne, we might have thought we
could creep into the top six in the league. Now – not certain
about that. We will find out soon when the conference season
commences as eight of the first 10 games are against those top
200 teams, including both Hofstra games in a 10-day stretch.
Without looking at the KenPom predicted results, which I find to
be pretty close to the Vegas odds, I can't imagine we'll be
favored in more than two or three of those games, and are we
positive we'll win at William & Mary? Or at home against
       Monmouth?
The schedule is considerably softer in February, but we have to
get there first. 5-5 would be terrific TBH. 2-8 not out of the
question. Imagine sitting here at the start of February at like
       9-14?
But we have to wrap up the non-con slate first. Brown's just the
right matchup – at home, winnable, a potential launching point
for us, not a fight club like West Virginia (2023) or a cupcake
like Farmingdale State (2022). Gotta get the W of course.
This is the worst offensive team that Brown has had in quite a
while – just 40.8% from the field, and a ghastly 62.7% from the
free throw line. Some tough games to watch for that fan base,
which, to be fair, isn't much at 723 a night. Lilly, a first
team all Ivy pick last year, will play almost every minute as
their primary ballhandler/scorer and will undoubtedly finish
with his 20, but he's a little erratic for me. He reminds of the
kid Azar Swain from Yale where he'll get his 20, efficiency be
damned. Just too careless with the ball IMO – the team is too –
and I feel like we can steal some extra possessions if we can
       jump into passing lanes.
As for guarding Lilly, I do like that we may be able to play up
on him to force him to drive rather than shoot, and lead him
       into the trees.
Brown isn't terribly big, but they've done a fair job on glass
behind Owusu-Anane and Anya. Those two killed Boals and Ohio on
the boards and nearly sprung the upset, and they went tooth and
nail with pre-Bronny USC too. For wins, the triumph over
intrastate rival Rhody is a good one. I do wonder if Fitz,
Maidoh and Snoddy can neutralize them. It really does make a
difference to have a second legitimate big in Maidoh – last year
was tough with Fitz, Sarvan, Policelli and a little Muratori at
the 5, and Brown's duo racked up 19 boards (10 offensive) in
their win against us. I think Snoddy's going to be important as
someone who can match their energy and springiness.
Fun stat: we're 40 for 87 from three in our last three home
games. That's 46 percent. I have to think the 40 makes in a
three-game stretch in a record, and if it isn't, it's very
close. We have two guys over 40 percent for the year (TSM .467
and Frey .406). I'd love to know the last time that happened
here with that kind of volume. On the other end, we have to be
careful too – opponents are shooting it better than 37 percent
from deep against us, and our opponent has hit at least 10 three
balls in each of the last five games.
Here's hoping we can finish the year with a bang. With the
overall strength of the conference, this really feels like our
first-ever year as a mid-major, and we have to be ready to jump
in next week and get after it.

We can talk about having a size advantage here, but we've only
won the paint points battle once this season, and that was 24-22
at Army. For the season, it's 334-216. The most lopsided total
was 42-18 at Nebraska, but the next is a 26-8 deficit against
Bryant – a win. 86 points, only eight in the paint. Almost
       doesn't seem possible.

       great intensity from snoddy.
brown showed an early full court press. our other four werent
aware until 10 seconds later when clarke passed the line.
games like this make me question why we dont just feed the ball
inside to maidoh on 90% of possessions. fitz too; same thing.

Losing the battle of the boards 20-11 so far. Getting out
       worked.

Agree on the last point. Fitz and Maidoh having their way. You
do these guys a favor every time you don’t. Maidoh’s second foul
       hurt.
