*Sorry for the late post. Had trouble getting back to this*
I think we all know what to expect from this kind of game – a
real challenge on the glass, tough on-ball defense, and a team
that can just wear on you after 25, 30, 35 minutes. There's
always been a junkyard dog kind of vibe to them offensively, and
this year is no different.
People were ready to shovel dirt on Michigan State when they
started out their season with a home loss to now-ranked James
Madison. But geez, they were 4-5! Those losses came to three
ranked teams – two of which were in the top 10 – and then at
Nebraska, which has rolled up a 10-2 record (but I'm still
dubious about). Anyway, MSU likely quieted some skeptics when
they buried buried sixth-ranked Baylor over the weekend, jumping
out to a 45-17 halftime lead and coasting from there. I'm not so
sure they quite have the horses to make a run at the title, like
some people picked in the preseason, but they do have a
tournament-tough coach and some excellent guards, which is a
good cocktail for success.
Another Walker from Long Island! Unrelated to Ahmad, but he is
related to Andre, who we went 2-1 against during the mid 2010s
when he was with Loyola. It wasn't Andre's fault – he averaged
21.5 points in the latter two contests. We'll see a similarly
dynamic guard in Walker. He had 35 in their loss to JMU, and
averaged 22 against Duke, Arizona, Wisconsin and Baylor. Looking
at his size and productivity, you expect this speed guy with
incredible handle, but that really isn't him. He's just steady,
unafraid of getting into the paint, good finisher, good
mid-range, gets open running around a million screens, make a
million free throws, etc. I was trying to think of a comparison
– he's like Doncic/Kawhi in that he never seems out of control,
yet is obviously much slighter. Maybe Kemba Walker. And it makes
sense as Walker was lightly recruited out of high school, went
to Northeastern, averaged 19 a night as a sophomore while also
being named CAA DPOY, and then sought a bigger stage. Now he's
leading a national title hopeful in scoring – it goes to show
you that guys at this level can have an impact at power schools
too.
Oakland was able to hang around for a half by throwing a zone at
MSU, but then the shots began to fall for the Spartans. They
don't have this offensive force inside a la the kid from Florida
last year, even McCormack from Kansas a couple years ago, but
they have a few bigs who can collectively do damage inside, or
exceed the norm and get a double-double. I do think that this is
a slightly weaker rebounding team than in years past, yet I
don't see a scenario where we are winning that battle and/or
cleaning up with second-chance opportunities. Games against
these elite teams oftentimes feature too many one-and-done
offensive trips.
If they control the defensive glass, we could see them run a
bit. They racked up 20 fast break points in their win over
Oakland. For comparison, we have hit double digits this year
just once.
Fun fact: Michigan State had 14,797 people at its game against
Oakland on Monday. Our guys won't likely play in front of a
bigger crowd in their lives. For the record, the (hapless)
Pistons are at 17,715.
Brutal fact: This is on Big Ten Plus, meaning we have to pony up
to watch it ... unless someone has a fugazi link.
I'm happy with where we are right now. Take out Wagner, and the
teams who have beaten us are 33-12. Granted, we don't exactly
have a marquee win either, but to enter the Brown game with the
chance to finish above .500 heading into the conference schedule
is, I think, a solid achievement. Anything under 15 tonight I
think would be a good showing.

Thanks as always, Checkmate!
Regarding BTN+, be aware you can sign up for a given B10 team
for $ 9.99/mo (via internet browser), but if I tried to sign up
via my Roku TV, it was $ 14.99/mo. Also, BTN+ only has REPLAYS
for football, and not basketball - so you can only watch
tonight's game live. I'm not going to be around to watch during
game time, and was gonna sign up to watch the replay, but there
is none!
If you know anyone who goes to a B10 school, they get access to
BTN+ for free, but you may have to access via that school's VPN.

Thinking back to that game in 2017 against MSU, we actually shot
50% from 3 that day (13-26) and still lost by 22. Just got
killed inside. They had a pretty special frontcourt featuring
Miles Bridges, Nick Ward and Jaren Jackson with Xavier Tillman
coming off the bench. We were pretty small in comparison with
Tyrell and Saintel as our two big men. This we can match up a
little better size-wise this time around and hopefully have
similar luck from 3.

It's a sneaky big night for the conference.
98 Hofstra at 101 UNLV
120 UNCW at 188 Marshall
126 Charleston vs 76 St. Joseph's
Two of three would be terrific. One of three decent. A bagel
undesirable.
Even the lower teams, William & Mary, Hampton and UNC A&T go on
the road against higher ranked opponents with the chance to win.
What does it all mean big picture? Not a ton. We're still a
one-bid league. But it would good to see our brethren jockey for
position among mid-majors and win.

MSU is creating a lot of wide open shots- and sinking them-
because they move the ball so well. (8/9 from two)
i'd like it better if we closed out more, but that's what
happens when you play a team like MSU. pick your poison.
maidoh doing a great job 1v1 in the paint with the ball.
early foul trouble for fitz and TSM. were in an unfortunate
position of being down 31-7 early, and shooting 1/9 from the
perimeter (two airballs), and now having to take threes.

We look as bad as bad gets. Hopefully the 3s will start falling
at some point.
