Bryant ended up being a terrific replacement for us in the
America East, haven't they?
This year, they have so many scoring options. There are the guys
you see above who are doing it, but even off the bench, you have
Latimer, who we know can shoot it, Connor Withers, who's an
inside/outside threat like we saw when he was at Lowell, and
Doug Edert who played a key role in St. Peter's tournament run a
couple years back. No matter who's on the floor, they'll have
guys who can knock down shots somewhere.
I hope Latimer gets a good ovation from what I expect to be a
decent Saturday night crowd. I liked him not only as a shooter
but he was close to a lockdown perimeter defender. I suspect
we'll see him on TSM at some point; hard to believe that they
played together four years ago. It's too bad Latimer didn't
stick around, although I didn't need the short shorts game, ha
ha.
Under Grasso, we got accustomed to Bryant playing at this
frenetic pace. It's a little different under Phil Martelli Jr.,
son of the famed St. Joe's coach. The threes are still a staple
– they take 27 a night, although the numbers are skewed a bit by
gaudy numbers against sub D-Is. Drive, kick, repeat. And they've
bore down defensively. Siena didn't score its first basket for
seven minutes on Wednesday. Bryant has held six of its eight D-I
opponents under 70 points, including #10 Florida Atlantic, which
followed up that loss with wins over Butler, Texas A&M, Virginia
Tech, Liberty and Charleston.
The stats certainly show that. Opponents are shooting just over
25 percent from deep (6th best D on the three nationally).
They're blocking seven shots a game too, and they had 13 against
Siena, a school record. It doesn't seem like there's a theme on
how to beat them – Manhattan and Rutgers wore down the smaller
lineup inside, BU buried 14 threes, Xavier scored in every way
imaginable on their way to 100. We're going to have to be more
workmanlike. Against a weak zone, you knock down threes and win
going away, but this is a clear step up in competition. I think
Fitz, Snoddy and Maidoh have a chance to do some damage on the
offensive glass.
Defensively, we have to rotate and get out on their shooters.
I'll take my chances with them shooting twos amid our trees.
Side note: It's weird to see so many Long Island guys on
somebody else's roster; without question it's because of Grasso.
Bryant has kids from Bay Shore, Mineola, Westbury, even Queens
and Brooklyn. Granted, we haven't exactly had a history of
cleaning up on the island, and I don't even know if that's where
our recruiting efforts are anyway – just Snoddy for us this
year. Hofstra has a couple.
We've faced each other the last three years, with the home team
winning each time. I'm dubious about this one though,
particularly if AC isn't ready yet. I just see Bryant with all
these shooters, and then match them up with ours and feel like
there's a gap.

No AC, no Snoddy. As usual, no updates on either.

Not a great start! Have to close out on Withers better.
TSM bringing the ball up?

Gotta do a better job denying the offensive rebounds and not
leaving their shooters open - but we're in the middle of a great
shooting stretch to make it a 2 pt game again. Bryant has been
playing a bit sloppy too but we haven't made them pay the most
for it.

Did they say anything on TV about Snoddy?

I don't think they even mentioned what Snoddy was out with.
Good run to get back into it, but when we could have taken the
lead, we had two turnovers and the final possession was just
bleeding the clock for Toby to shoot a 3. We had all the
momentum and could not put the icing on top. We are really not
taking advantage of our size advantage at all, Fitz has done a
great job drawing lots of fouls but aside from that there's been
little action inside.

Just that he and Clark are out. Illness? Injury? Who knows?
Also no word on why Muratori is out. The CIA should recruit out
of Stony Brook.

That offsetting technical call seems like BS. Timberlake flat
out shoved Toby unprompted.

As Pav pointed out, no reason why Maidoh and Fitz are hanging
around the arc. We should be pounding inside.
