Saturday was a should-win. This is a must-win. You cannot lose
to Stonehill at home, no matter who's in or out of the lineup.
Stonehill had a very respectable year in its D-I debut last
year, finishing 10-6 in conference. As I said against Wagner
(sigh), we can't take them or anybody lightly. For the first
time in a while, I'd love to just dust somebody at home like we
should, but it always feels more difficult than that.
Stonehill's going to hit us with something we don't see too
often – a 3-2 zone – which ought to open up the corners for
shots and also to dump it down low to Fitz/Maidoh or to cutters.
This is no secret, so we have a few days to learn how to attack
it in practice. If we come out unprepared, then I don't know
what to say about Geno. It's as obvious as Syracuse's 2-3, only
without the ridiculous length.
Unfortunately, shooting and movement haven't proven to be our
strong suits. I don't believe that we have these threats to keep
feeding the post. However, we have an advantage in both height
and width that I think we can take advantage of. Fitz is going
to have four inches and 40 pounds on whoever's guarding him, and
both he and Maidoh should be able to have their way on the
glass.
More likely, IMO, is that this is a big Frey game. Against the
zone, he can hover between the wing and the corner waiting for
somebody to find him. I like Fitz and Maidoh as passers too, so
this is a good spot. However, we all know how we (and a lot of
teams to be fair) can fall in love with the three on occasion,
regardless of the results. If you move the ball quickly, guys
are going to be open. They're good looks! But sometimes they
don't go down, you look up, you're down on the scoreboard
because you're 6 for 30 from deep. We can't rely on it though,
especially against a team that lacks size inside and has given
up 79 or more points in every game but one – their one win, a
57-44 triumph over Army.
It feels like we've been sped up the whole season between St.
John's, Duquesne, Rider climbing back into it, Wagner turning
the tides, etc. I don't expect that from Stonehill, which seems
mostly content to drop back into a zone. But then again, they've
undoubtedly watched tape on us and saw how things unraveled
against Wagner without AC. Unlike Wagner though, I don't think
Stonehill quite has the athletes or the length to give Noll, TO,
et al, that much trouble if it comes down to it.
One point of contention about the NCAA in general: if somebody
moves up to Division I, let's just make them eligible for the
tournament already. What happened last year with Merrimack
winning the NEC but being left out of the bracket (granted,
opening the door for Cinderella FDU) is just silly to me. This
year, Stonehill is NEC tournament eligible but can't dance. I'm
sure there's a well-thought-out reason for it, but I don't like
it.
After Rider, I think we viewed this stretch as leading up to
West Virginia as us dreaming of 5-0, targeting 4-1 and being
satisfied with 3-2. These next four, though, are no gimmies. You
know about Bryant beating FAU. But did you see that Norfolk
State just won at VCU? And Army's been bad, but they've been in
most games, so are we sure about going into their gym and
winning? This Stonehill game has to be the start of something. A
friend pondered whether Geno would ever be cut loose midseason
(no chance IMO) and people have talked about him being extended
already (I need the Statesman to verify), but if there was ever
a time to do it, losing back-to-back games to Wagner and
Stonehill in our gym would be the time. Win or lose, probably
not. But we have to have some kind of standards, don't we?

if youre right on the 32- let's see how much we dribble into a
zone.
if i was stonehill, trying to upset a more talented team on the
road- i'd look at recent the 1/19 stat and zone it too. shoot
all day and miss, why not. that's what the #s say, at least.
not all that different than what wagner did with the 3/4 press,
in the sense that they have a strategy.

I know Stonehill's bad, but 10.5 just feels like a lot.

IMO, if we don’t win this game by double-digits, something is
seriously wrong.

Nice end to the half. Frey doing a really nice job passing the
ball, 5 assists for him already. 9-17 from 3 as a team. Lets
finish strong!

I know they’re playing zone against us, but too reliant on the 3
(9/17). Do we think we’re the Milwaukee Bucks?

Woof those crowd shots are rough. Maybe people don't think that
Stonehill is D1?
Have to put them away early in the second half. They were gonna
dare us to shoot and we've done a good job so far.
