       Delaware to Conference USA
By: Checkmate Date: November 28, 2023, 6:11 pm
       ---------------------------------------------------------
This news broke yesterday but it’s worth discussing here. This
is a tough blow for the conference, both in football and
basketball. With the CUSA being at 11, I can’t help but think
they’ll move to get to 12 soon, maybe even tapping into the CAA
again. Is anybody else thinking of making the jump? Delaware has
long been a candidate. Or would a team like UMass leave the A-10
so football had a conference finally?
  HTML https://www.espn.com/college-sports/story/_/id/38991597/delaware-set-join-c-usa-part-fbs-move-sources-say
In a cruel twist, they will be eligible for the conference
tournament in basketball in each of the next two years.
What’s this mean for the CAA? If Charleston bounces as has been
rumored, all of a sudden this conference is very weak, with
recent additions Hampton, A&T and Campbell offering very little
       across all sports.

Rumors arent flying about Charleston leaving the CAA, or at
least in the mainstream circles. Unless I'm entirely out of the
       loop.

The Delaware move definitely hurts, and will it trigger further
       attrition?
It's early in the season, but according to KenPom, out of 33
       Conferences in Men's Bball:
       - CUSA is ranked 13th
       - America East is ranked 20th (Bryant has had a positive impact
       on this Conference's ranking)
       - Coastal is ranked 21st (newcomers, as Checkmate mentioned,
having a negative effect on the conference)
I too, haven't heard the rumors of Charleston leaving, but given
the success of the program and its large rapid fan base, it
certainly wouldn't surprise me if they looked to "move up".
In retrospect, maybe a longer term move to A-10 would have been
a better decision for us. SH's predecessor, Fiore, certainly
had those aspirations. Colonial/Coastal seemed like a logical
next step, especially since Football was already there, but with
Conference free-agency in full swing, maybe it wasn't the best
       long-term move for us.

while all of this is true- there's no way we couldve known that
CAA would sandbag itself, in an effort to gain members.
i could see CoC looking if not already taking the cap off the
pen. i would if i were them.

I’ve seen the rumors of CofC to the A10 basketball only private
good fanbase makes sense Checkmate. I have heard that it is
       likely soon as well.

The first place I saw it was in the Field of 68 preview, and if
Goodman's putting his name on it, I have to believe there's been
at least some discussion. I hope not. It's amazing what a 30-win
season can do for a school's profile. Of course, it's a great
city and fans come out for the games.
I find the timing of it interesting as Delaware needn't be
scared of a postseason ban. Their departure will only generate
more conversation among athletic departments and fan bases.
Nobody wants to be caught with their pants down.

I have always dreamed of us playing in A10. But seems like that
       will remain a pipe dream.
May be we can follow Delaware to CUSA, or Buffalo can help us
get into MAC. While most teams in these two leagues don’t excite
me, perhaps moving to FBS will also be good for basketball. Time
to use our location and AAU membership to use.

I'd personally rather be in a conference that sponsors all
sports like CAA than a basketball-only conference like A10. I'm
in no rush to jump conferences. We need to learn from JMU and
Delaware and build up the program and earn our way up.
Not to go full Hammertime, but does anyone know what CAA added
Hampton, NC A&T and Campbell? Feels like it watered down the
conference quite a bit. Would've much rather added Albany or
       Bryant as a full member.

After reading the Delaware board, many of them feel the exact
opposite - they had a Sun Belt invite in the 2010s back when it
was the weakest FBS conference and rejected it, waiting for
something better. Now 10 years later Sun Belt is one of the best
G5 thanks to App State, JMU and Coastal Carolina while CUSA is
on a fast decline. I tend to agree with them: better to at least
get your foot in the FBS door for sure because who knows what
       can happen from there.
I believe Hampton was added in tandem with Howard (the school
that the CAA really wanted, because of its historical academic
reputation.) However, Howard backed out of the verbal CAA
agreement at the last second so now we're stuck with only
Hampton, a school the CAA never truly had interest in.
NCA&T and Campbell were added to appease the southern schools
like Charleston and Elon to prevent them from bolting for likely
the SoCon, since they felt that only adding three northern
schools, including us, unbalanced the geography too much in our
direction and worsened their travel costs. There were articles
after we were added, I'll see if I can find them, where the
Charleston AD said that the CAA was going to expand past 12 like
it was a given. I personally thought 12 was the perfect size for
the CAA, so I wasn't a fan of the Southern bloat.
