Our last game feels forever ago, but hopefully we've been
sharpening our tools, are back healthy and are ready to get to
work.
Years after Pete Carril and Princeton, a little bit of Penn, a
lot of Harvard, it feels like it's been Yale that has carried
the torch for the Ivy League over the last five years or so.
It's been them and Princeton that have raised the league's
profile all the way to 12th this year. Since the 2013-14 season,
the Ivy has finished ahead of the CAA in the KenPom conference
rankings six times out of 10, and it's not looking good for us
this year either.
Yale really had URI on the ropes, leading by as many as 18 in
the first half and 12 at halftime. And this was all without
Knowling, an All-Ivy player who's just an all-around talent. But
the Rams clawed back into it, racking up 23 second-chance
points, including 18 in the second half. And it's thematic of
the year; Yale's 4-0 when they outrebound their opponents; 0-3
when they don't.
Watching that game, I came away very impressed with this kid
Wolf, and I think you will be too. And it's strange that he
barely played as a freshman; now I have to think he'll be in
conversation for Ivy League POY. He's a legit 7-footer who can
go to work down low, put it on the floor and get to the basket,
and also step out and knock down the three.
That's something that this team can do in general, with two
absolute marksmen in Poulakidas and Mahoney. The former got
offers from power conference schools, including Pikiell at
Rutgers, but instead opted for the more academic route. Mahoney
was NYS Class A POY at Albany Academy, playing alongside current
pro Andre Jackson; he chose Yale over, among other places, us. I
can't remember having a shooter like him, but maybe Frey is it
before he's done here.
And they have all these shooters, but it's Mbeng and Knowling
who are really the ones who make this team go. Mbeng seems to be
in the mix with everything, and he's coming off a conference
DPOY season as just a sophomore. And Knowling came into the
season as the alpha on offense, although Wolf has a chance to
assume that mantel with his versatility. Knowling did warm up in
the URI game so I suspect we'll see him on Wednesday.
We stayed in last year's contest by limiting Yale to just six
threes, and thanks to a big night from Clarke. I do like his
ability to get into the paint in this one, although he could see
more of Mbeng if TSM continues to sit. We sure could use his
explosiveness and versatility on the offensive end. We rank
third to last nationally in assist percentage at 30.9%. By
contrast, Kansas leads the country at 75.3%, and there are four
CAA teams ranked at or around 100.
I do like what we've done on the defensive end, even if our
first three opponents went over 80. Rider [s]may be[/s] is
wretched offensively, but we hadn't held anybody under 50 points
since February 2021 – a stretch of more than 60 games. So we're
competing on that end. Maidoh on Wolf will be a matchup to
watch.
To go into their gym and win is probably too much to ask, but it
does feel as though we're still feeling our way around a bit
with this lineup. Schematically, we have to be better, and maybe
this nine-day layoff has given us an opportunity to work out
some kinks.

The Ivy League looking good so far this year. A win against Yale
would be a nice barometer. Probably the toughest game we got
until Michigan State

Haven’t been able to watch much living on the west coast now
6:30 tips cut into the work day at the office. But barring a
miracle this program needs a new coach jump start just to get
energy fan support is dismal. Offense pretty brutal to watch
granted no TSM. Maidoh i love his energy and defense. But the
lack of a system remains we dont play a fun brand of basketball
that people want to sacrifice stats to play in. Hope this
changes as the season keeps going and guys gel. Curious about
why Nahar is redshirting when i could see him slotting in as a
big small forward. Last year he had nice stroke and passing
highest longterm ceiling on team maybe im missing something im
not at practice. But a win against yale would go a long way
towards getting a little run going.

Looking forward to this one. Hope TSM is back so we're at full
strength. Would be nice if they can keep the home and homes with
Yale for future years.
I'll be watching for the 3P% in this one. Our guards so far have
pretty ugly numbers especially compared to Yale (Clarke:28%
Noll:23% Frey:31% TSM:33% TO: 17%). Have to figure we get some
reversal to the mean as the players get more time playing with
each other and the schedule gets a little easier.

I agree, feel like Nahar as the backup PF would add a lot more
value than Frederick as the 6th PG.

I think Pav mentioned on one of the broadcasts that Nahar is out
for the year due to injury (back, I think). So I guess they
decided to Redshirt him, to give him the extra year.

With sports gambling being as big as it is, how long before NCAA
requires injury reports

FWIW, MBB just tweeted a picture of practice @Yale and Nahar was
practicing and TSM was not. Also TSM not listed as a probable
starter in the game notes. Wonder if this injury is more
significant than we were led to believe.

We’ll take TSM in any capacity tonight.
Color commentator needs to be benched.
