Hmmm, does this mean that he gets paid his salary ongoing?
He was going to get paid either way. Now they're just going to
make him work for it
there's precedent for this. it's tantamount to putting a coach
out to pasture. there are admin jobs to fill, he keeps his
pension, he's getting paid anyway, he has a year or two to look
for work, familiar with the dept, don't have to call it a
firing, stays on board for the transition, knows the recruits,
speaks to the team, etc. It's a win win win. the only friction
could be how the new staff integrates him in.
the question that i now ask is- if we had this administrative
solution all along- why not implement it last year? the year
before?

I disagree the assistant coaches work tirelessly and a lot
better than what you people make them out to be as awful coaches
and should be fired. During the Spring and Summer when SBU has
its Camps and Clinics the assistant coaches have to work them
and they were not compensated for their efforts.
We only see them in game situations I have been to their
practices, clinics, camps and a lot of players who commit to
come here enjoyed their Spring and Summer experience with the
position coach that they met. It’s hard to judge how an
assistant coach performs if the HC ties their hands. Behrman
left and now is a HC in Ohio, Reichert left and is is now a DB
coach at Fordham, Noel got fired and he’s the DL coach at
Richmond and they’re others that either quit or were let go that
are doing very well. I heard that Chuck would interject when the
OC sent the play’s in and send a player in with a different
play.

So not actually fired. Likely re-assigned to administrative job.
I imagine he'll just end doing a lot of cold calling alums
asking for donations or something.
I actually like that. Make him work for his money until his
contract is over. At least you can get some work out of the guy
rather than just buying him out for free.
That's the way I see it. Throwing away $675k at a guy for no
work makes no sense if you can make re-assign him anywhere he
can be useful

Time to chime in.
First, good work Mike Anderson of Statesman for clarifying
Chuck's status.
All of us on air Sunday night believed they would hold off on
replacing Chuck because of the buyout. Unless a donor ponied up
for it.
Sam Kornhauser and John Espey were both reassigned in similar
fashion and stuck around in non-coaching positions. Consider how
long ago those moves were made. Although neither of them were
pulling in anywhere near Chuck's salary. When you hire the new
coach, you're basically paying for two. And if you're thinking
you can get someone for less than you're paying Chuck,
fuhgeddaboutit. How do you pay your new head coach less than
your still-employed ex-coach?
But it had to happen. This was just the path of least
resistance. I said Sunday night that if the program continued to
founder, it would render itself ripe for the axe a la Hofstra.
Football takes four times as many scholarships as a basketball
program. It has to be self-supporting at the very least and that
happens only if the team is good.
I also considered who will be doing the hiring. I believe there
is a search committee involved and I would be very interested in
finding out who will be on it.
President Maurie McInnis has been dead silent when in comes to
athletics. Stark contrast to Shirley Strum Kenny whose support
made the upgrade to Division I possible. And Samuel Stanley rode
the baseball team bandwagon to Omaha.
Meanwhile, lots of reasons to be optimistic about basketball,
particularly the women. Glad that disaster of a football season
is behind us.

The new head coach will need to have his say with the program.
That means he gets to decide amongst the assistants who stays
and who goes. There are some position coaches (WR specifically)
who could stay but the team horribly underachieved.
Here’s what I want in a coach:
1. Well connected in NJ/LI- like Spallina has done, we need to
get the next tier of local talent. We won’t get the Coans and
Ruckerts of the world but we should be able to clean up the next
tier. The CAA is still a great opportunity to showcase yourself.
It’s telling that the best Long Island natives to wear our
uniforms came to SBU after Hofstra folded. NJ is a goldmine for
football talent as well.
2. Good communicator- the press conferences were emblematic of
the problem. Treat people with respect and inspire the campus
and local community. This has to change. Overall the whole
athletic department needs to do a better job communicating as it
relates to football.
If they make the right hire, I’ll be back at Lavalle next
season. I haven’t been to a game in four years after moving off
LI but I will make the trip back for this team as it’s one I
still care about it.,

I'm less concerned about getting a guy with regional connections
than many of you. Long Island and NYC football isn't
aggressively recruited the way it is in basketball and, to be
honest, there's a lot less football talent here than in other
parts of the country. If we went with a local guy, I'd want
someone from NJ where there's a lot more college football
recruits. For the LI/NYC, I think you can have assistants with
connections.
Generally, I agree with others that talent hasn't been the issue
here. It's been player development and the system

good post NJ. my wish list- in addition to yours:
-i like the concept of a patriot/ivy coach. someone familiar
with academic rigors.
-someone who understands the challenges of college football on
LI, the disadvantages of the U, it's geography, location,
student disaffection, the campus limitations, etc. Even the
"bad mid fall weather" we talk about sometimes.
-modernize the offense a bit. it's time. i havent coached in
many years but we all know that offense used to be 10vs11, until
about 15-20 years ago when QBs started isolating DEs with an
optional carry. now its 11vs11. (pro is different, because so
much resources are dumped into developing the QB, that you can't
risk 5-10 carries a game. college has always been different but
it may be converging.)
-fans might need to be patient. with the portal, the coaching
change, the losing, the pandemic- there will be turnover and
there will be delays. you all wanted this, now you got it- and
overnight magic is hard to find. also, send in some cash will
ya.

I am going to keep going back to JMU tree. They know how to hire
successfully. I like Mike Shanahan who is the current JMU OC and
that last name doesn’t hurt (even though no connection).

Letting it get to this point, 0-10 with a very weak returning
roster, admin has created a situation where fewer good coaches
might take the career risk at SBU.
Although I believe the pay will be comparatively good, the
facilities are adequate, and the academic reputation mean that
we should get at least a couple of promising risk-takers.

The returning roster is far from weak. There is depth all over
the field, and on both sides of the ball. Improvement on the
offensive line is key, as well as the secondary. But if you look
at the roster, saying weak about the players is wrong. They have
the talent to improve and succeed.
