       The 2023 season in statistics
By: NJ Seawolf Date: November 11, 2023, 11:54 pm
       ---------------------------------------------------------
Folks, there is no doubt this season was a disaster from top to
bottom. I was bored and wanted to quantify just how bad this
season and looked at how bad Stony Brook was relative to the
rest of FCS (out of 122 teams). It's much worse than just being
one of 8 winless teams. I would argue only one team in FCS was
worse than Stony Brook and that was Western Illinois (who seemed
somehow to be a bigger disaster than Stony Brook somehow!)
       #121 scoring defense
       #111 scoring offense
       #100 rushing offense
       #106 turnover differential
       #119 in passing yards allowed
       #93 in rushing yards allowed
#56 passing offense was actually better than I thought
The worst number for me out of it all was a -240 point
differential which was the 2nd worst in FCS behind Western
Illinois (-329!). Just for reference, NC A&T which won 1 game
this year had a point differential of -145. Albany, hardly a
worldbeater, had a point differential of +108 at the end of the
year which is bonkers relative to Stony Brook.
The numbers don't lie- the 2023 Stony Brook football team will
go down in the record books (with Western Illinois) as the
       epitome of futility.

The 20 points we scored against Albany today was the second-most
       the whole season.
Even while we had two red-zone fumbles.

Western Illinois was actually less of a disaster than SB. Their
numbers are from playing in the MVC, a far stronger conference
       than the CAA.

attendance- with the caveat that few of us trust these figures:
       del: 11132
       rich: 3678
       ford: 4165
       unh: 7739
       uAlbAny: 5671
       total: 32385
       per game: 6477
so what's that, just over half full on average?

I don't trust a single team at any level, not just SBU. They all
lie. Now the closer to professional you go, the more accurate
the number may be as they're more widely scrutinized. But also
keep in mind they use ticket sales for attendance numbers and
not actual people in the stadium, at least that's what pretty
much every pro team does. Ever been to a weekday Yankees game
where maybe 20,000 people are there and magically attendance is
announced at 40,000? Its because they sold that number of
tickets, so they don't give a shit how many actually showed up.
But with SBU I've witnessed first hand where they discussed what
number to put down for attendance for a game. And ever wonder
how SBU has had record attendance for certain games despite that
number being above stadium capacity? Lies. 10,000 seats
including the suite plus 2,000 standing. According to fire
marshall anything above is a fire hazard and illegal. But hey,
SBU has had 12,500 people at a game before. Sure. It's not like
we would've noticed the stadium literally packed out with no
       room to move.

basically make up a number for every game and laugh about it for
every sport. She has been upstairs in the booth when its

Your daughter is 100% right. They (SBU) just pick a random
number that sounds good, go around a couple times to make sure
everyone is good with it, and boom, that's how many people were
       there.

This is probably industry standard at this point, wouldn't be
surprised if every college does it. Some of the bigger P5s may
be more honest but no one ever enforced attendance rules in FBS.
