I always viewed Duquesne as this dead zone for basketball – year
after year just terrible. And it's justifiable! They haven't
been to the NCAA Tournament since 1977 behind Norm Nixon – the
only Duke alum that I can think of who went pro (forgot TJ
McConnell upon Googling). But these guys can get there I think,
at least as good a chance as anyone else in the A-10.
Looking at it broadly, what's really too bad for Duquesne is
they have almost no opportunity for a premier win, unless
Nebraska ends up being a tournament-type team. But other than
that, we're talking Dayton, Loyola Chicago, St. Bonaventure,
Princeton, etc. Sadly, none of that does anything for anybody
come March when these power conference teams that lose 15 games
can point to the time they upended Duke or Arizona or Alabama.
And a team like Duquesne could lose four games to teams in 100s
in conference and that's just so damning.
But they have the horses to do damage in the conference
tournament, and in all the months leading up to it. One of the
concerns I had in the preseason ought to be in focus here – how
well can we guard quick guards? We'll find out because Grant,
Clark and Rozier can all fly and they can all score. Our guys
are really going to be hard-pressed to stay in front of them,
and they can and will defend 94 feet. I like that they all
complement each other too, with Grant (first team all A-10
preseason) as the knockdown shooter, Clark (second
team/defensive team) getting to the rim, and Rozier zipping
around and distributing. Guard play is so enormous late in the
season, and it can easily be argued that Duquesne has the best
       backcourt in the conference.
Again, I feel like this is a TO game as much for his defense as
his offense. I wonder about Clarke and Noll chasing these guys
around, yet I also don't want us throwing it around either. On
our side, I liked our busy hands and activity in passing lanes
against St. John's, and do think we handled what pressure they
applied pretty well. Bookkeeping: Noll's seven steals against
St. Joe's tie him with Emeka Smith with the fourth-most steals
in a single game, one behind Munir, Hayn and Bunche. Just
looking at the record book, mid-80s in the 1990s must have been
       something to watch.
More on TO ... I just think we need his pace, and Frey has to
get more than two shots up in 17 minutes IMO. Geno certainly has
       tools to work with.
They aren't massive, but did go out in the offseason and get
some help inside, including with two guys – the Drame brothers –
that we've faced in years past from their time at St. Peter's.
They also brought in Savrasov from Georgia Southern, and return
Tre Williams, who's had an interesting career arc, having gone
for 11 and 6 as a freshman and fallen back since, averaging only
13 minutes in two games this year. I do think they can be had on
the glass, and maybe this is a game where Maidoh can drop in
       some second-chance points.
The broadcast team will undoubtedly reference the link between
Geno and Keith Dambrot. They met plenty of times while Dambrot
was at Akron and Geno at Kent State – just 14 miles away from
each other. The most notable occasion came in the 2011 MAC
championship game when the Zips prevailed 66-65 in overtime –
the closest Geno has been to the NCAA tournament as a head guy.
Two days later, he was announced as the new coach at Bradley.
Dambrot continued what was really an awesome run at Akron. In
the end, 13 seasons there, 13 seasons with 19 or more wins (12
with 20+). He's been at Duquesne since 2017 and, aside from a
hiccup in 2021-22 when they went 6-24, the success has
continued. They ought to be right there in the end in the A-10.
A win here would really be something, especially only a few days
after Charleston wilted in the second half there. Feels like a
tall order, but for the first time in a while, it seems like we
have the horses and some semblance of a plan.

       Thanks, Checkmate.
Regarding TO, unquestionably he is quicker and playing with more
confidence than last year. If there is any silver lining to
last year's injury debacle, it was him getting major minutes at
the D1 level. Not sold on Clarke being the starting PG; he has
been relatively unimpressive IMO over the first 2 games - wonder
if he is still feeling the effects of last year's back injury.
Frey can shoot (just look at his perfect form on FT's), and
needs to be in there for 25 mins/game IMO. Also, I like Noll,
but he has a major shoot-first mentality, and I'd like him to
look to pass a bit more. Really like his D though. Maidoh is
an enforcer, and gives us that rim protection that we didn't
have last year. Overall, like our depth this year for sure.
Even Space looked good during gar-bage time.
       My 2 cents.

I've really liked TO so far. I'd like to see him start and
Clarke provide offense off the bench.

We're going to need Noll's production. I just get uneasy about
tough twos. He hit three or four against St. John's that, if
they didn't go in, would be remembered as exceptionally bad
       looks IMO.
I like Frey out there because he stretches the floor. I believe
defenses will find that they cannot leave him alone, whether
he's 25 feet out on the wing or tucked in the corner. That opens
up driving lanes and just gives us a lot more room to operate in
general. He was also looked pretty composed getting into the
paint for a couple short jumpers against St. John's. But can he
stay in front of people? There is no easy assignment with these
       Duquesne guards.
Worth noting about TO is he shot the three at a 38 percent clip
in conference play last year. We all think of him as this
developing point guard, but he bills himself as a shooting guard
and he filled it up for us. Also, he's a really good rebounder
for a smaller guard and competes defensively.

A little dose of reality in the first half. Good reminder to not
put too much stock in D3 games. Thought our defense looked
formidable but noll and TSM have to start making shots.

       3-for-17 from deep. Cmon guys.
Even TSM who was such a sure shooter for us historically feels
like he's overaiming everything this year. Hopefully it's just a
blip because we can't be this bad from 3 to win meaningful
       games.
