I really hate GF, a lot. And have been down on the team since he
took over. But they actually looked fairly competent tonight,
and for the first time in a while, didn't feel embarrassed to
watch them. I think SBU despite the final score, played up to
their competition, and St. John's played down to SBU. The
Johnnies clearly have a lot to figure out and it will take them
some time to mesh and fully adapt to Pitino's system. By end of
season it'll interesting to look back on this game and see how
both team fared the rest of the way. I still 10000% believe the
best thing for Stony Brook MBB is to fire Geno, his son, and
anyone else attached to him, then bring in a semi-competent
coach to lead the team to actual relevance in the CAA and a good
chance at high seeds in the conference tourney every year. But
this was a good start to the season. Lets see if Geno can fuck
this up or actually earn his money for the first time rather
than stealing it like the previous four years.

I had low expectations Maidoh and was very wrong. He's going to
be very good for us.
Noll is a very different player than I expected. Tighter handle
than I expected. Took difficult shots and they fell. Interested
to see how the rest of the season goes. Also thought he looked
gassed in the 2nd half.
I want to see more TO.
Hoping Clarke can be more productive against mid majors with
less length and athleticism.
Do we run plays? Jared Frey is supposedly the best 3 pt shooter
Ford 'has ever seen' and yet we couldn't get him a single look
from 3? Generally just a lot of iso ball and as Checkmate
pointed out, the lane was open, and we still couldn't get to the
basket.
Liked Snoddy.

I know that Pitino's the headliner, but I still find it strange
that, in Newsday's 850-word recap, we got only the last two
paragraphs.

Eclipsed in the all the Pitino hoopla and this most-anticipated
Storm season was that the Seawolves look far better than the
ninth-place team forecasted in the Coastal Athletic Association
preseason coaches poll. Dean Noll, who missed all of last season
after knee surgery, can get his own shot and make it and scored
15 points. And Central Connecticut transfer Andre Snoddy – a
former Newsday All-Long Island pick out of St. Anthony’s –
looked like a tough physical matchup for anyone in the CAA as he
finished with 13 points and seven rebounds.
“Dean was terrific. He’s a really good player,” SBU coach Geno
Ford said. “He was a little tired because he hasn't played in
two years, but he'll just get better and better.”

I never thought this was a winnable game.
But I was surprised by how well we played. We didn't look
overwhelmed. We looked physical. We looked like a team that will
be much better than our preseason rankings (which I get because
they're based off data from last year's injured squad).
I think the big thing is that we're led by a bunch of grad
students: TSM, Noll, Clarke, Sabry, Keenan and Maidoh. They're
grown men. They're experienced. Adults. And they won't look like
the moment is too big for them. Maybe I shouldn't have been
surprised.
I also feel like if we get beat, it's because the other team is
better (like tonight) or because something odd happened (like
weird shooting).
I just don't know if this is a sustainable model. I know that's
college hoops and the transfer portal, but is that how you build
a program?

Getting SB to shoot low-percentage three's is historically not
that difficult

I agree with you. My sentiments are the same, but. I did watch
this game too and must say. Stony Brook looked good, real good.
I do wish them luck this year in the CAA. and Let's hope they
can make some noise, and not embarrass this university again.

I’ve been disappointed in Geno but the team looks exponentially
better. Last year I give him a mulligan with the injuries. This
team should be competitive this year in the CAA and shouldn’t
embarrass the university like football
