A good hoops program adds value to student life because many
games are played during the week when students are on campus.
Not so for football.

I have to think that $12 million a year would be better spent
improving the student social experience or luring Nobel prize
winning faculty to SB.
I'd argue investing in athletics IS investing in the student
social experience
Maybe right in theory but it hasn’t worked out in reality. SB is
a weekend commuter school and has a large Asian population.
Neither group cares much whether football sucks or has a .500
season. Basketball has more widespread appeal to all groups
(games are played during the week). Putting the money towards
football instead of basketball and other non-sport programs has
proven (and will continue to prove) to be a waste. Hofstra
learned that years ago…and they were winning.
These things aren't set in stone. The school can (but hasn't
yet, frustratingly) build more on-campus housing to decrease the
commuter population, while also targeting a student demographic
that is more football-friendly and personable. In fact, we may
be turning away prospective students who would hypothetically
add to campus life because of the current shortcomings. A more
serious football program would alleviate these current
criticisms.

By commuter population I mean those who go home on Fridays. As
long as so many students come from LI and NYC they will continue
to go home on weekends, football program or not.

You still have not explained the good attendance not that long
ago. It was still a commuter school then. Why did they come to
the games then and not now? St. John's is a commuter school.
They draw crowds. Fordham draws crowds. The commuter school
excuse doesnt wash when you look at them coming just a few years
ago.

good discussion. i thought they have built much housing, but
the problem is the influx of students outpaced even the new
construction. nevertheless- the new students were more of the
same problem- in my opinion, that is. this is clearly
anecdotal.
*homecoming was an exception; i've never seen the campus come
alive like that. not on game day, not on graduation, move in
day, the roth regatta, 2016 AE title, nothing. maybe the 2010
mlax quarters but that was locals not students.
and yes- we have two levels of commuters, as Ry1nik wrote. 26k
total students, 10,500 beds on campus. no telling who lives in
nearby student housing (as opposed to home). so conservatively
there are roughly half living "off campus", which is blatant
conjecture. of the perhaps 14k living "in the area", how many
leave on thursday? judging by 25+ years of experience, i'd say
more than half. and that's based on parking lots, living there
4 years, over 100 visits since, the lack of students visible on
a weekend, and how many lights are off on a saturday night. an
inexact science, but the point is that a thursday exodus leads
to what the internet calls a "suitcase college". and then, well
what do you think- do 17 year old kids google if the U they
applied to has any party scene???
HTML https://talk.collegeconfidential.com/t/stony-brook-a-suitcase-school/1572609/2
bball is different of course from football, for the reasons
Ry1nik also pointed out.

You sound like the ad and his staff making all the excuses for
empty game days but youre not answering my question about why
all these commuters and oncampus students used to come to the
games. Your point is a part of the issue and the ad lost them.
they used to come to games. You should stop giving them excuses.

There are long term issues to fix with the student population
and sports culture. However I distinctly remember 10k plus at a
rowdy homecoming and similar sized crowds at other games. Right
now the horrible quality of the product has discouraged people
from wanting to go to games. From an apples to apples
standpoint, the football program is not even drawing fans at the
same clip that it did 5-10 years ago.
When the product is good, more people will come. When basketball
was at its best I remember IFCU being packed to watch friggin
Columbia.

Finally here is some one who does not over analyze and blah blah
blah about it being a commuter school. It was a commuter school
when the stadium was full and the arena was full and you had to
sit in traffic on game days. But commuter school blah blah blah.

Okay but they are letting this ad waste it over the past ten
years. If you look at albanys football program they are doing
much better. Albany gets fans to come out to games and their
winning. A financial investment is useless if the president
keeps an ad and football coach who does this every year. Your
giving reasons why the administration is bad by saying they have
this big budget and we have 6 losing seasons.
I'm saying what I've been saying throughout this thread. We need
to fire Priore. Contrary to others in this thread, I'm saying we
do in fact have the budget to get rid of him. And I think a new
coach could come in and immediately turn things around, so the
near term future doesn't have to be so bleak.
I was infuriated to find out Heilbron extended Priore before the
2022 season. I'm less convinced that Heilbron needs to be fired
over that mistake than others, but that's assuming he makes this
right by firing Priore now.
I would say most certainly SH needs to go. He is the Captain of
the ship. He allows his crew to put it on the rocks. I would
also not label Helibron extending"No Pressure Chuck" but a
flagrant disservice to the players/fans/boosters.
Also SBU keeps advertising the "game day experience" .....where
is it? A tent hidden behind a scoreboard, cafeteria food,
security that chases you out as soon as the game ends. They
purchased all those trailers and have them parked in the back.
Like said in a previous post, they do things ONCE and then they
forget and never do it again. The athletic dept support services
lacks energy and motivation and that's bleeds into the fans
because everyone sees it or senses it. Even the website is
terrible. Out of date posts or no ability to obtain information.
Just a shame that they allow this to continue.
