SB will NEVER be an FBS program and its a joke to even think
that. They cant compete at the FCS level and have secretly
extended their coach with five straight losing seasons. There
isnt a big donor group there and the top two administrators in
athletics have watched season ticket sales and attendance
plummet.
The college landscape is changing and Heilbron and SB have been
left in the dust. They are way behind on NIL and there NIL will
not raise much money at all. If you drop football you can focus
on basketball where a real chance of getting an NCAA check
awaits. Did you see the NIL is made up of lacrosse people who
have no experience raising money? Have any of you heard from any
of them?
FBS? haha.
At least in the FCS nobody knows we're getting our sh!t pushed
in because nobody cares. That 2-10 record in the FBS becomes
much more high profile because everyone would know we're trash.
We'd wind up in the weekly bottom 10 all the time, etc.
The one sliver lining in being totally inept.
Certainly an interesting way of looking at things...Sadly true

That Statesman article is four years old, and to Ethan Tam's
credit, pretty spot-on.
What's more mind-boggling, however, is how the Athletic Dept
supposedly has the fourth-largest budget in FCS but certainly
doesn't act like it. I have some doubts about that, because
Villanova is a power conference school (Big East) in every sport
but football and we know about the success they've had in
basketball.
Stony Brook is outspending Villanova? Not getting much bang for
the buck, are they?
The more I think of it, if indeed they are looking for one, the
more SB needs an AD with power conference experience. Someone to
restore the swagger, the one thing I give Jim Fiore credit for
above anything else.

I found Ferrante's salary online. He is the Villanova football
coach. I'm sure he makes more with bonus's and incentives but
its listed in the $300,000 range. SB pays their head coach over
$500,000. The dept peaked under Fiore and has tanked under
Heilbron.
SB extended a losing coach after many losing seasons. I'm
guessing Heilbron has been secretly extended which is a death
blow for fans of the program since its been nosediving since
Heilbron took over. What the dept needs and what the dept gets
from this president appears to be two very different things. The
very clear message being sent by the university by quietly
extending Priore and now maybe Heilbron is that they dont care
about athletics. If thats the case fans will have a hard time
caring too which is why I asked when they should just drop
football since they dont care. Shawn reimagined the gameday
experience when he took over. It flopped. This next idea of his
will most likely fail as well.
If the university isnt a fan of athletics and football why
should anyone else be? We have become a laughing stock.

Welcome to the SUNY way of doing things. This would never happen
in a private university.
One would think, that half a million Dollars can find you a
really good, young assistant HC from an FBS school who wants to
make a name for himself.
SBU clearly has different plans for athletics, and the public is
in the dark. What could it be??
President McInnis has been the President for a while now and had
plenty of time to take care of priorities within the university.
Those priorities are academics, not athletics. We all can agree
with that. But, I think ignoring athletics completely is doing
an injustice to the university. She obviously was not brought
into SBU to focus all her time on athletics, but she should be
focusing some. Extending both Priore and Heilbron contracts is a
slap in the face for the university and the donors who support
it. Because of this. I tapped out supporting this school a while
ago because I saw the writing on the wall..

Don’t see us dropping football even with the awful results the
last five years (and particularly awful last year) AND the utter
lack of student body interest in the program.
The ordinary college move is to switch out the coach for an
engaging up-and-comer who can focus on recruiting (we’re lacking
in talent and the ridiculous QB situation is merely Exhibit A).
Not sure if anyone on this board follows Patriot League
football. SBU needs to copy the Holy Cross example.
IMHO we were not a 2-9 team that had a couple of unlucky bounces
and could have been .500, we were one of those 2-9 teams that
could have easily been 0-11.

SBU should not and will not drop our football program.
Those evaluating the possibility are not appreciative of the
hard work so many have put for the University to be where it is
today.
Yes, our football program is struggling a lot. Yes, it finds
itself in a vicious downward spiral of losses/apathy/losses.
But this program will remain and we need to support it. We have
great facilities, we have the size, and we have enough
commitment from the administration to support football at this
level.

Wrong, dead wrong in many ways. Hofstra dropped their football
for good reasons, and their history is a lot better than SBU is.
Sometimes you just gotta say no, and let a failing organization
fail!!! Clearly, SBU is going in a different direction, and that
direction is not football.
