During the course of the year, Halan approaches [s]Mara[/s]
Hexor (not particularly secretly, in case anyone wants to be
curious). "Hey. Do you still have your paper from the Prince? Do
you think I could borrow it for a little while?"

(Just to be clear, she never got a letter from the Prince. She
got a letter from me, as a noble, pardoning her for her crime in
exchange from service to House Atticus. I states that I am using
the powers granted to be by the Prince, but that's his only
mention.)

Hexor will stop what he is doing, look Halan over carefully for
a long moment before replying.
"If you are asking after my Decree of Nobility, it is currently
locked in a secure vault at the Church of Erathis in Silverkeep.
It is not a document I would carry about in our travels." He
pauses and give Halan a half smile.
"But out of curiosity, why do you want it?"

"Oh, nothing major. I just want to look it over, under your
supervision actually. After all, you would probably be more
intimate with this continent's habits regarding papers, inks,
sealing wax and any protective measures all the way from subtle
markings up to and including enchantments used for Royal
decrees." He pauses, well aware that Hexor knows what is coming.
"I want to forge a different decree, of course. Figured one
might come in handy. But first I need to get a very good look at
the original and materials as close to it as possible."

"Well I figured that a decree stating that we are members of the
Prince's very secret spy organisation might help get out of
potential trouble with the law that we might get into for any
reason like being hunted by groups of weirdos, and it could gain
us some allies should we find ourselves in need of them."
He pauses again, and shrugs: "Also I personally want to have
another contingency to get out of trouble when I do something
that's not strictly legal. And because it will be fun to have
people believe my forgery."

"Does the Prince even have a spy organization? If so, do you
know what it is? If your concern is legal troubles due to your
past connections, I wouldn't worry about that overly much. I
have been given broad authority to keep the peace over my lands,
and if I were to say that this group is a threat to the kingdom,
especially in a time of war, there are likely very few who would
contest such a statement. If you want to join such an
organization . . ."
Hexor pulls out a small stack of papers, fingering through them
to find the one he is looking for, and offers it out to Halan,
before putting the rest away.
"This missive shows the recent movement of troops in my newly
formed army."
The form shows nearly 200 troops being located at Salt Reach and
another 250 being located at Bonebarrow, to staff the newly
constructed outpost built on that site.
"As you can see, I have created a few contingencies of my own,
just in case." He smiles a shark smile, full of teeth and little
humor, as he hold his hand out to take the paper back from Halan
after he's done reading it.
"As for you extra-legal activities, I won't say don't, but I
would ask you ask yourself why beforehand. Because if you get
caught without reason, judgement of you, and your actions, falls
to me."

"I don't know about such organisation, but neither will the
regular people, plus you can always claim to be from a DIFFERENT
organisation than the one they know. People like to believe to
be privy to very secret information and they love to be part of
something secret because it gives their lives larger meaning. It
was less about actually joining and more about having a signed
paper saying I did."
He starts muttering mostly to himself now "But I suppose it's
not necessary, probably not even necessary to copy directly the
Prince's handwriting, after all, how many people would have seen
that, true enough, and maybe going smaller could be better in
the long run, lower bosses are more believable than the Prince
himself, but then that would require creating another person as
the boss..."
He then realises he's still with Hexor. "You've given me a lot
to think about. And by the way where did you get almost 500
soldiers what the hell. And don't worry, I'll do my best to get
caught only when I have a good reason and very low possibility
of ever being connected to you." Halan winks.

"Where? What do you think I've been doing these long weeks on
the road? At every stop I talk about my House, did you think I
was just talking to hear myself talk? I mean, yes I do, who
doesn't." He says with a smile.
"I've been recruiting, and sending other with messages of
recruitment. There is war coming, even if none of you seem to be
aware of it."
He looks off into the distance for a moment, mind else where,
before coming back and writing down another note.
"I did not work this hard, suffer all this loss, the loss of my
sister, the rebuilding of my House, take all those Oaths, just
to watch it all burn. I plan to be prepared." He says, finishing
what he is writing and stamping it with his own seal, before
handing it over to Halan.
The paper is a rough outline of admission in the Atticus Academy
of Salt Reach as a 'security consultant', sealed with his seal
at the bottom.
"You'll likely need something more official eventually anyway. I
had wondered if you, or any of the others, would like a formal
position within the House or its attachments." He steeples his
fingers, eyes flickering between their normal red and psionic
blue.

Halan thanks Hexor and leaves a moment later.
Over the year he tries to glance as many official documents,
especially coming from the Prince's official channels, or at
least by the guard – noting seals, handwritings and sometime
later, when he feels secure enough about seeing a good enough
sample, whip out his forgery kit and making himself a fake ID as
part of a secret service specifically tasked with treasonous
activity and aiding the Ma'rantians.
He then goes, in secret, to Mara and Tali.
"Hey. So here's the thing: I have this book. A book that may
have been stolen from Eidelfen. Now, of course, I want this book
to be used to help us. But in order to do that, I'm missing a
thing. There's a codeword that opens it. Or something, I
suppose, it's actually not quite a book but something
transmuted? Neither me nor Tali really got anything beyond that
if I recall. So the deal is: I wanna go to the guy I stole the
book from, pretend I'm secret police, compell him to tell me the
word with non-magical means for as long as possible and then
scram. Or through magical means if I really really have to but I
don't want to do that.
ANYWAY, I would like you, Tali to be in the shop, browsing the
wares, it's a magic shop, so you should be fine and... well, we
can work on inconspicuous, if you'd like. Well. Less
conspicuous. Maybe. You'll be there trying to read his mind when
I ask him. If all goes well, we'll get our answers right then
and there and you'll let us know that by leaving the store.
Meanwhile Mara is there to serve as my backup and/or
intimidating presence, sort of a good cop bad cop situation.
It's a terrible plan, I don't want to involve Hexor because I
don't want grief for stealing a magical book and not telling
anyone and there is a solid chance we'll all get thrown in jail.
You think you can swing that?"
Before they get a chance to respond, he adds. "I should be able
to get us out of the jail though. I mean. There's a decent
possibility of that."
