Tamlan eyes the game board that Hexor set up, then reaches out
and takes the first move. “Sanity and safety are constructs of
those who have the privilege of choice. That is not a world in
which I live. Nor is it one in which ‘even’ bargains exist. We
all trade that which we don’t need for that which we desire.
Perspective is the universal bias. So I’m afraid my rules must
stand. Besides, I have no questions to ask. This game isn’t
about gathering information, it’s about choice. Your choice. You
are more than welcome to give your earned questions to others
though.”

Mara sits down on Tamlan's other side and says "is it nice to
meet you, Tamlan, or have we known you this whole time? The
Gemflower that we got to know and loved, was any of him you? Do
you know us, or are we strangers? Do all of these count as
individual questions?"
She looks from Tamlan to Hexor to Halan and Kiran and Tali and
back to Tamlan again. "I know we've all given each other plenty
of reasons for distrust, but I consider you all to be my family.
If Gemflower is fully gone, maybe never even really Was... that
breaks my heart." But she smiles and continues, "but I'm sure
you're very nice too."

Halan says, with a glint in his eye: "The truth of what I am is
a secret. The way Tali makes friends is a secret. So is Kiran's
old SO/CO. You might know these from a bit before but they are
still secrets by definition. Surely they are worth at least the
basic rundown of how you met us chained to a wall, for example,
what the thing was that made you... shatter your mind... and how
exactly you managed to do that and leave yourself, ironically, a
stuttering husk of chaotic energy. Or choose any or all of those
that Mara asked. Your games' rules are unclear and you surely
can stretch them that far."

Kiran goes to sit down by Hexor, and then snaps his fingers and
points in Halan's direction. "That is a very good point. I'm not
at all opposed to getting to know you... again, Tamlan, but if
you remember us from before, then you rather have us at a
disadvantage." He makes a face. "I would prefer not to deal in
secrets with someone who is, to me, a virtual stranger right
away."

Hexor considers Tamlan's move, and makes a similar move on a
different layer.
"If you've no questions of your own, then why gather secrets? If
we all trade what we do not want for what we desire, then surely
secrets do not fall in this, for if we truly did not want them,
they would not be secrets in the first place."

Tamlan continues playing while listening to everyones
objections, but answers Hexor first. "I said we trade what we do
not need, not what we do not want. Those are two very different
things. And any secret you are willing to trade is surely one
you do not need. That is all I am asking for."
He looks up from the board and addresses everyone else. "The
answers you seek, Halan, are valuable and won't be given away
for free. The rules may be vague, but they are still rules.
However I can tell you all this, as it could be considered an
extension of my original explanation, I have lost no memories
and I am no stranger to you all. My well simply runs much deeper
now. The fact that you all distrust me simply because I now
stand equal with you says much more about your character than it
does mine. You could have learned much from Gemflower, but you
chose to treat him as either a pet or a tool, rather than a
person. No judgement. I bear no malice, as Gemflower had a great
time throughout it all, but you don't get to call disadvantage
just because I paid more attention to you than you did to me."
He pauses momentarily before continuing with a wide smile. "Mara
was right, though. I am VERY nice."
With that he turns back to the game, making another move. To the
casual observer Tamlan's confidant appearance suggests that he
has Hexor exactly where he wants him and victory is imminent.
However, to anyone who is proficient in the game, it rapidly
becomes apparent that he has no idea how to play and is just
moving pieces randomly.

Halan scoffs "Okay, Mr High and Mighty, you can't be serious
about the whole 'suddenly distrust me because I am equal now'
shit as if you did not just get out of a bag when your soul was
supposed to be eternally trapped and you start spinning tales
about shattering your soul to protect it as if that makes any
sense. Fact of the matter is that old Gemflower looked like he
could barely say his name, whereas Tamlan is suddenly someone
crafting erudite sentences and writing books. Hexor barely spoke
to me since he found one thing about me - and I don't blame him
because distrust in the face of new information is NATURAL.
There is the matter of being able to gain new level of trust
later, of course.
But don't act as if our problem is merely that you can respond
to what we are saying when you know it runs deeper as that, if
you are as smart as you appear to SUDDENLY be."
He looks at Tamlan: "Plus you used magic to charm me as we met
for the first time for the second time in a row, something that
should not be possible. And if you say it was because I tried to
put a spell on you, I remind you you were supposed to be mostly
dead and I offer no apology for that."

"Haha!" Tamlan breaks out into a fit of laughter. "Oh yeah... I
HAVE done that to you each time." He continues laughing to
himself until he finally just shrugs. "What can I say? I'm a
charming guy." He sends a wink at Halan and starts to giggle
again. "Oh, I cant wait until the next time we meet for the
first time!" He wipes a tear from his eye and continues with a
smirk. "You also seem to be very hung up on your certainty of
what that deck was 'supposed' to have done to me, but I'm pretty
sure I'm the only one here who fully understands the nature of
that thing. To draw even one card is, to borrow from Hexor,
wholly insane and incredibly dangerous. Now I relish such
things, but as we've already discussed, I don't believe in the
concept of sanity or safety. You, however, seem to fear almost
every uncertainty and Hexor values his life and reputation more
than most, so I can only assume neither of you fully understood
your choice. At least not the broader scope. That thing is a
powerful and dangerous artifact of pure chaos, but it's not the
only one. There are many more powerful things in this world...
and others. Who's to say I'm not one them?" He holds up his
hands and raises his eyebrows, as if to say 'Think about it'.

Hexor notices Tamlan's plays and what they amount to, but in his
eyes the game is less about winning and more about reading and
learning your opponent.
"Yes yes," he says, taking a vital piece from the main board
with ease. "But you err to assume we were not watching. While I
cannot speak for the others, I was watching. There is a reason I
made the choice to make you the Steward of my House, and it
wasn't because of you gold spending habits." He pauses a moment
to consider if Tamlan's seemingly random plays are a set up for
a trap or merely disinterest.
"You forget my race when you speak of chaos. My people thrived
in chaos when your race was still crawling out of the mud," he
says, deciding that the moves are random and not a trap. "I know
fully well what that deck entails and what my choices meant when
I drew. What is life without risk. Not worth living I say!" He
finishes, setting up his air board to lay siege.
"You say we must trade, but I say we do not. I have no
objections to you, either persona of youself. In fact I find you
all the more interesting now, knowing the little I do, and
assuming a great deal more. However, in the interest of the
game, I will offer this - Vexor was not my only sibling, she was
merely the last. I killed my eldest brother when I was barely an
apprentice, and he a Master, simply because he could have become
a threat to my power. I offer this secret in exchange for a
single answer from you - What do you intend to do now?"
He glances between Halan and Tamlan, sending a message to Kiran
via their telepathic link Threats from all sides, be on your
guard. Though he may act rational, this Tamlan is far from it.
Madness lurks in his eyes yet still.

Kiran keeps his eyes on the boards for a while. Oh, I can see
that, but I have little interest in appeasing a madman, if he is
one.
"Say, Tamlan, when you talk about powerful things, it's as if
you mean to frighten us, insinuating you may be someone, or
something from another world. Are you?" He smirks a little,
makes himself drop some tension and look more comfortable. "My
secret is that I left home because my stepmother wanted me to be
a merchant daughter, and I couldn't be that. Judge for yourself
if it's a good one."
