Trying to get state of North Carolina to restore sauger to Frenc
h Broad River.

Hello from NC. trying to get the wildlife folks to stock sauger
into the French Broad where they have been extirpated years ago.
Thanks for looking at my proposal.
Restore reproducing population of sauger (Sander Canadensis) to
the French Broad River.
Sauger are a native species to the French Broad River but
pollution, silt and dams over the years largely eradicated the
fish from its restricted range in the Tarheel State. The
Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency is currently trying to
re-establish sauger into that portion of the French Broad River
above the Douglas Reservoir.
The North Carolina portion of the French Broad River below
Redmon Dam in Madison County has a resident population of
walleye and it has been guessed larval walleye are outcompeting
larval sauger where they coexist above Douglas Lake.
Three dams (Craggy, Capitola, Redmon) in North Carolina prevent
the migration of native fish to certain portions of the French
Broad however no viable populations of sauger exist currently
even if the dams were removed. But again, the TWRA is stocking
fish just across the state line.
I recommend the Wildlife Resources Commission look into the
possibility of restoring a reproducing population of sauger
above the Craggy Dam in Woodfin. This would restore a native
species and provide a limited sport fishery in this stretch of
river.
In the 1960s the WRC attempted stockings of sauger into the
Catawba and Yadkin Rivers outside the fish’s native range. These
stockings were ultimately unsuccessful.
I further propose a change to the statewide regulations on
sauger. Current regulations are 8 fish with a 15 inch minimum
size. Most sauger 15 inches or greater are mature females. The
current limits focus harvest on mature females and not smaller
males or immature fish.
I recommend , in conjunction with stocking, the following
changes to the sauger regulations:
1)
2)
limit in the Tennessee portion of the river above Douglas Lake.
