       At the same time, beginning in the second half of 1979, the
       Sandinistas decided to ally with the Soviet bloc. This decision
       was in no way forced by US policy , which sought to hinder the
       original project of the revolution. On the contrary, Jimmy
       Carter's government not only made numerous friendly gestures
       towards the revolution, but also provided substantial aid to the
