At the same time, security in Europe remains largely dependent
on NATO's ability to form alliances. Since the annexation of
Crimea in 2014, the defense provided by the Alliance has
gradually slipped to the center of our security policy. It was
precisely Russian President Putin, who, with his actions in
Ukraine, has put an end to years of existential crisis and
meaning of NATO and made a significant contribution to the
revitalization of the Alliance. Not long ago, an American

more united than it is now. Even some

Russian threat makes Europe see again in dramatic fashion how
dependent it is on US security guarantees. Reducing this
dependence will continue to be a formidable challenge for Europe
in the years to come. Because even if the United States were to
reassert itself in the Western Alliance, Europe should not
forget the bitter lessons of the Donald Trump years and aspire
to a greater degree of strategic autonomy.
