Somewhere over the Bifrost (Haru X Anzu)

It had felt like an eternity since Haru felt he could relax. Of
course it was just his state of being to stay perpetually
stressed. As a prince he had a list of duties to attend to and
even if he micromanaged as little as possible, it was rare to
find those who could be trusted to do their jobs without being
overseen. It made the young man appreciate all the more the few
that he didn't have to hand hold. But there was other things
that had been stressing him and it had been Anzu's health. She'd
been in a coma for what had felt like an eternity. Even as a
member of the Britannia royalty with a different concept of time
it had felt like each day dragged on for years. He had been sure
to keep a watchful eye over her with how eager her mother was to
just pull the plug and did everything to deter it. It was
strange but in some ways he had grown increasingly protective of
Anzu during this time. He would find himself not sleeping and
just took time to travel to the hospital that had been housing
her to sit at her bedside. He was joined by her other friends
whom he'd gotten to know.
It had taken searching and a lot of work but finally they had
been able to locate a sufficient method for bringing her back
but Haru had been grateful that it worked. What he hadn't been
expecting was the state that her psyche had been in. The poor
girl was hurting from all of the problems she had faced and it
was all the more telling that Anzu needed a change of her life
to be able to really and truly put everything behind her. after
she had regained consciousness it hadn't lasted long before the
physical exhaustion had set back in. Haru spared no expense in
the medicine she received and had decided to take a sabbatical
from his duties so that he could stay beside her. The doctors
had informed him they could notify him when she awoke but Haru
felt it was best that a familiar and friendly face be there for
her when she really came around. She may still be groggy and if
she needed someone he vowed that he'd be there for her. So there
he sat at her bedside. Her hand in one of his own while his
other cradled a book in his lap for him to read.

Everything that happened felt like a dream to Anzu. Like none of
what'd happened was real. How she got here, how she got hurt,
all of it. The moment she'd been able to awake from her coma,
she felt like she was having an out of body experience. It was
as if everything about her wasn't there anymore. It was rather
difficult to explain. She knew who she was, she remembered her
friends, her family and of course Haru, but inside she felt that
something was missing. Being awake had overwhelmed her
completely. She was happy that Haru had been there. Apparently,
the entire time she'd been out, she'd been in the Britannia
Kingdom under Haru's protective care.
If it hadn't been for him, the brunette wouldn't be here today.
Those storms that hit Domino had damaged the down pretty badly
but Tokyo had gotten it the worst. All Anzu could remember from
that day was walking home late that night before all the
craziness began. She didn't blame anyone for her being out that
night. She blamed herself more for not being careful. Her
sister, Haru, and her friends were so worried about her. There
was nothing she could do to make it up to them. She had hoped
hey would forgive her for not being with them for so long.
Anzu eventually opened her eyes, slowly turning her head toward
the direction in which she felt her hand being held by someone
and the sight she came upon was Haru sitting at her bedside.
"H-Haru-san..." she managed to speak softly.

Haru had told himself that he'd conduct himself with composure
whenever Anzu awakened. The last thing the girl needed was to
have someone overly fawning and attending to her but even as he
heard her voice. It was soft but he remembered it as clear as
the last time he had ever heard her speak. He turned his head
quickly and couldn't suppress a wide smile. His eyes showing so
much relief and concern as his left hand put the book away from
him almost blindly. "Yes Anzu?" she remembered his name so that
was a good start. He shifted in his chair to turn and better
face her in her hospital bed.
No amount of mental prep made him realize just how many
questions he wanted to ask. Did she need anything? Was she
comfortable? Did she remember? But all of it had to come in due
time. She didn't need him to overwhelm her and he was sure she
had even more questions than he did. He gently brushed his thumb
along the ridge of her knuckle as he looked down at her.

"I'm ... sorry," Anzu apologized. Even if Haru believed she had
nothing to apologize for, the brunette felt she needed to.
Merely because she just wasn't here with everyone and had them
in constant worry. With what strength she had, she carefully
closed her hand, wrapping it around Haru's, her lips formed into
a tired smile. Anzu was happy to be awake despite how torn she
felt on the inside. It would also seem that while she was out,
her hair had grown in length as well. She almost thought she was
looking at someone else when she'd first awakened. She knew
she'd have to cut it later. Right now, she was too tired despite
not wanting to be cooped up in a hospital bed any longer.

Haru heard her apologize and wanted to move to correct her, but
then again she seemed to need the peace of mind. Feeling her
squeeze his hand, if it was to comfort herself or him he
couldn't be sure. Squeezing it back he leaned over the side of
the bed and put his forehead against her own, keeping his voice
soft and low to help not startle her. "You don't need to worry
Anzu. You're safe and that's what mattered most. We're glad
you're back. I'm glad you're back." His free hand reached around
to push the hair back from her brow and he found himself putting
his lips against her forehead to give it one soft kiss. "Do you
need anything? Water? Food? Your pillow or bed adjusted?" He
asked the last part a little more tongue in cheek with a small
smile to show that he was trying to be courteous without
overwhelming her.

As expected. He didn't want her to worry about anything and as
she knew, he was just happy that she was awake. Anzu had felt
like she'd been dreaming forever, not knowing when it was going
to end or if that was her life from that point on. She mentally
fought hard to come back to everyone that cared about her. She
knew her friends would definitely want to know she was awake
now. Like with everything else, she'd have to take things a day
at a time. Her smile remained as Haru played his forehead
against hers, being close to him like this was so comforting.
It'd felt as if it'd been forever since she was able to feel his
touch. It wasn't a dream. His touch was warm. The kiss he'd
placed on her forehead was also warm, making her sigh in
contentment. "I'd really like some water," Anzu said in response
to Haru asking if she needed anything. Her throat felt dry. She
just wanted something to drink.

Water didn't seem to surprising. Being on life support meant
they kept her hydrated as need be but it wasn't the same as
actually drinking anything for as long as she had. He figured
he'd use the opportunity to also let the doctors know that she
was awake, if not a little groggy for the time being."Sure
thing. I'll get you some and be right back." He gave her
forehead one more gentle kiss before releasing her hand and
adjuring into the hallway. Spying one of the nurses on staff he
let her know that Anzu had awoken and that she was feeling a bit
thirsty. It didn't take long for the young prince to be brought
some ice water with a straw. The medical staff spoke to him
rather quickly before going to retrieve the doctor who had been
overseeing her.
Haru knew that really the medical staff here was going to do
everything to make sure she was taken care of but there was
still something for a person she knew being able to be there
with her and Haru would think it disgusting for him not to at
least do a little for her. Taking the cup he returned to the
room and brought it over to her and sat on the edge of the bed.
"The doctor should be here in just a little while to check on
you. The nurses should be right behind me. Can you sit up to
drink and do you need me to hold the cup for you?" He could only
imagine that her body must feel rather weak. While the
technology on Britannia was better than Earth, the normal body
still wasn't meant to be still for such long periods of time. He
figured she might still have to take things slow for a little
bit, but they could get her back up and going fairly soon now
that she was awake.

Her cheeks were tinted pink as Haru kissed her forehead again
before leaving to get her some water. Anzu felt so bad that she
wasn't able to be by his side for so long that she couldn't help
but want to make up for it. She didn't know how to go about it
but she would figure something out. Her friends had to be
notified of her awakening soon but right now, the brunette
wanted to enjoy this time between the two of them. She had to
work on feeling like herself again which was going to take
awhile. While her prince was gone, Anzu carefully and slowly
began to push herself to sit up. Once she was able to, she could
feel how much strength and energy it took for her to do just a
simple task such as that. 'Sitting still is going to drive me
insane,' Anzu thought as she glanced down at both of her hands
which she'd begun to open and close in order to get some
circulation and mobility back into them.
When Haru returned, her head rose in his direction and he'd
informed her that the doctors would be in to check on her soon.
She smiled, nodding. "Arigatou, Haru," Anzu thanked him. He'd
also returned with the water she'd asked for to which she'd held
out her hand for it. "I think I can hold it," she assured him.
Some serious work on her mobility was going to have to be done.
There was no telling when the doctor would allow her to do that
but Anzu hoped it would be soon so she wouldn't have to continue
lying in bed like an invalid. There were so many things she
needed to do and people she wanted to talk to after such a long
time. That wasn't something she could do while stuck in a
hospital.

Haru was mindful as he handed her the requested beverage. He
brought his other hand around to cradle just along beneath hers
in the event that she should lose her grip of the water. He
would let her take care of things but he wanted to be sure that
his hand was in place as a safety net. The last thing she needed
was to get a bunch of water spilled all over herself. It was a
little strange. Normally he always thought more with a logical
mind but it felt like now he was being guided more by emotion
than calculated actions. He guessed that was just the part of
him that only Anzu could bring out. It wasn't that the young
prince was emotionally repressed but when you had to be in
charge you had to think of every detail and more times than not
you couldn't let emotion cloud judgement.
When he was certain that she had the cup firmly in her grasp he
was able to ease his hand back down to rest beside her on the
bed. As he opened his mouth to speak there was the sound of a
mindful tapping on the door that was open. It was the nurse who
Haru had spoken to and who now was entering the room
respectfully. "Ms Mazaki? We're here to give you a quick once
over." She paused as she realized that she wasn't quite sure
what standard procedure was in the event that one of the Royals
was present. "You're sitting up, that's good. And you seem to be
able to get some fluids down. How are you feeling? Any aches or
pains? Stiffness?"

Her hands were shaky and stiff but Anzu managed to grip the cup
firmly as she slowly began to drink from it. She didn't realize
how thirsty she was as before she knew it, she'd finished the
water completely. By that time, a nurse had entered the room,
stating they were going to give her a quick look over. The said
nothing and nodded, holding the now empty cup in her hands as
she relaxed her back against the pillow. It didn't take long for
her to be bombarded with questions but it was to be expected due
to how long she'd been out. She knew she missed so much and
wanted to catch up. Anzu knew she couldn't rush herself to feel
better as it would do more harm than good to her health. She
was, however, glad that Haru was allowed to stay in the room
while the nurse was present. If she were back home in Domino,
this wouldn't be allowed as he wasn't family. Lightly, she
tapped the tips of her fingers against the empty cup while
clearing her throat more to speak. "Just tired but I am quite
stiff. My arms and legs. I assume that will go away in time?"
Anzu asked.
