Aang's mood seemed to shift, "I'm sorry I didn't mean to bring
up bad memories" she put her hand on his shoulder for comfort

Aang looked at her. "It's okay," he said, "I
probably need to talk about it. It's not like I've really ever
talked to anyone about it. I usually don't feel comfortable
around other people since..." he hesitated, but, he knew he
needed to let it out. "You haven't heard of them because... I'm
the last one. My entire race was destroyed." His eyes cast
downward again, grief gripping his heart and wrenching his soul.
"I should have saved them or died with them," he whispered,
trying to hold back the tears.

Zelda could see the pain that was going through his body
spiritually and slightly rubbed his back out of comfort going
she wasn't crossing a line. "You shouldn't say that....I can
guarantee you that there was a reason that you survived. You
needed to be here at this time for a reason."

"I came back," he said, his voice shaking. "And...
it was all gone... ashes..." his legs shook, and he sobbed. He
hated he was breaking down like this, but he barely cared. "I'm
sorry," he said softly. "And maybe your right. But what was the
reason for them... them..." he couldn't finish the sentence, but
he knew Zelda would get the message.

Aang took a deep breath, inhaling the clean air
of the mountain and the waterfall that splashed down the side of
the mountain. "What do you mean?" he asked, getting control of
his own breathing, the tears stopping flowing, gazing steadily
at her with his grey eyes.

Zelda hugged her knees to her chest and looked down. "I'm not
trying to compare my situation to yours because yours is just
tragic....but when I was little I remember nothing but my
parents fighting all the time. After a while my dad finally had
enough and just left her. I grew up thinking love wasn't real
until I met L- well this guy...but I guess you could say that he
broke my heart as well. But if you think about it, by what
happened to my parents I have always been very picky with the
guys that I have feelings for instead of just falling for every
guy that comes along. It's almost like a lesson that can only be
taught through personal experience."

Aang's eyes softened, and he whispered. "I
haven't really gotten close to anyone after..." his eyes fell to
the ground. "This place was... well, the place I was the closest
to being happy. I usually can stay pretty strong and happy, but
there's no getting rid of that weight. I've had a few friends...
but... none of them really, well, lasted. I'm still friends with
them, but they just, I guess didn't understand my abilities, and
it scared them. I just..." he looked back up into her big,
beautiful blue eyes.
(Katara and Sakka obviously didn't meet him in this
:( )

Aang smiled gratefully. "It's okay... I've
come to live and accept it." He looked at her bashfully, and
then hugged her, whispering in her ear, "Thank-you for being my
friend."
