Crystal Shadows ~ Chapter 1: Of Warriors and Wild

Merdia clicked madly away at her laptop, her eyes furled in
concentration. She was trying to finish her essay on the core
reasons behind the Fall of Custer and was getting nowhere. A
sentece would appear and then promply disapeaer again.
Merida growled in frustratian and banged her head against her
desk. "I need to get this done by nine!" It was agony. The essay
was a brain murderer and her show came on at nine, but there was
no way her parents (mother!) would let her watch if her essay
wasn't done.
Her fingers inched treacoulsy close to her mobile phone, to call
up a friend and plead for help and this curse of a paper.
But she had promised herself (and her mother...) that she would
do this assignment on her own. No help, no hints, no nothing.
And pass! But -"ugh"
Merida was at a loss. So she stared out the window. Her and her
family lived in a penthouse and her view was spectacular. She
was the glittering lights of the city and far beyond them the
wild she love. Her mind started to wonder.

Zelda knocked on Merida's door and came inside. "Mom wants me to
check if you're doing your essay and not watching t.v." Merida
may have been looking out the window but Zelda could feel her
eyes rolling at the thought of her mother constantly trying to
control her life. "I know, I know, but she's our mother and we
have to deal with it." She walked in and sat on the edge of her
bed seeing that her younger sister by only a year was having
trouble writing her essay. Considering the fact that there was
nothing written yet. "Need any help?"

Merdia sighed. "Ugg! Mom. Why does she have to be like that?"
Zelda just shrugged. "Thanks. I got a couple paragraphs done,"
she scrolled the document up to prove it, "But I'm stuck on the
final anaylsis and conclusion paragraphs. But they said no help,
from anyone.Then she wailed, "I can't concentrate!"
Just then she heard a giant clunk from downstairs, and then fits
of enraged giggling. Presemably it was their tripelt devils, er,
brothers again.

"oh gosh they're at it again....how do they get away with so
much?" she shook her head and patted Merida on the back "just
keep going and before you know it you will be done!"
She ran into her three brothers who decided that it would be fun
to play baseball in the hallway. She snatched the bat and ball
from their hands "Get to your rooms! I swear I must be adopted
because there is no way I'm related to you three little devils!"
Zelda went back to her room where she continued packing to leave
for college.

Merdia exhaled up, past her big lower lip, exhasperated, her
hair curly red locks floating a little. She sighed and clicked
on her iPod. Then suddenly inspiration hit her. She knew what to
write! She laughed at loud, her nose wrinkling up she was so
happy. It was 8:57 when she typed the last word and hit save.
With a giant smile she raced downstairs. "Mom! I finshed!"
"Great job, sweeite." Elenor looked up from her stich work to
smile at her daughter. "Have Zelda proof it." Merida deflated.
"But you can watch. I know how much you've been wanting to." She
perked up again! "Thanks Mom!"
Then she swiped a pop, some chips, and an apple from the kitchen
and dashed back up the stairs. She plopped down on her bean
chair and clicked the TV on. She settled in and started on the
chips as the final commerical finished and her program started.
"In a time of myth and a land of magic..." She was brimming, it
was the premiere of the new season and she had gotten her essay
done! "I'll get a copy to Zelda, during the next commerical
break," she thought.
Just as she was poping open her soda, her phone buzzed.

Fakir looked at the keyboard. School sucked! He hated every
minute of it. He would much rather be in the woods behind his
house, or at the duck pond - also behind his house. Instead, his
brother had threatened him into doing a paper for his history
class. Stupid straight A student. Stupid little brother. Stupid
history.
The only good thing about the situation was that writing came
very easily to him. He zipped though it, dropped the paper in
his brother's inbox, and ran outside.

Duck was floating on the pond behind Fakir's house. It was both
great and incovient at the same time. As a duck, Fakir was nice
to her. He played with her and gave her bread, he would talk to
her and she would quack in response - sometimes it seemed like
he even got what she was trying to say. They had fun, and could
even be called friends. She liked that part of having her home
behind his house.
The unfortante part was that it made keeping her secret, a
secret, a lot harder. "Its not easy being both a duck and a
girl" she sighed. And as a girl, the two of them didn't get
along. During the few times they met, it always ended in a
squabble, irritatation, and often hurt feelings.
"Quack?" She had though she had heard the crunch of footsteps.

Zelda could hear the ringtone and vibration from Merida's cell.
She went to her room and peaked her head through the door "if
you don't answer that phone I will and you won't like it!" she
teased but Merida only tried to shoo her away so she could watch
her show. Zelda swooped in and grabbed the phone only to get it
taken away from her by Merida before she could press any buttons
so she could answer it.

"Zelda!" the redhead screamed as she asked "Hello?" into the
phone. "Who-is-it?" she mouthed. Her sister waved her hand
teasingly and Merida decided her time was better spent watching
Gwaine and turned back to the TV biting into the apple as she
did so.

"they're asking for you" as Zelda handed the phone to Merida.
She asked who it was but Zelda only shrugged as she leaned over
to steal a handful of popcorn to snack while she watched Merida
talk to this person.
