I am using the Superheat item spell to make stell bars, then
making the bars into cannonballs and selling them

yep, probably the best way to train magic and smithing and get a
decent amount of profit

you should, it has gotten me from 66 to 76 mage and from 60 to
70 smith in almost no time at all. You can mine or buy ores from
g.e then just super smelt, make cannonball, sell (after you've
banked alot of course), repeat.
