Lets get the discussion started!
Firstly I think that this is a very interesting article that
deals with a subject usually forgotten in our society, mental
health. We are all under considerable pressures due to the
nature of our work and the national environment created by the
current healthcare climate. I'm sure we all cope with this
pressure in different ways and it is horrifying to hear that
such a high percentage of healthcare workers turn to illegal
mechanisms to try and cope.
The article has a very hard hitting point:
While a significant portion of these individuals become addicted
to
alcohol, when anesthetic drugs are involved (chiefly
intravenous opiates and propofol), death is frequently the
initial presentation of the disease.
The relevance of this paragraph in relation to previous
incidents at RSCH is quite powerful. In life there are many
things which can drive us to make poor decisions, but due to the
potential abuse materials we have available, intervention or
help may be too late. I hope that if any of us felt a colleague
was in trouble, unable to cope or just needed a bit of help we
would do all we can. Healthcare workers are notorious for self
neglect even though their role is to provide care.
There are resources available to us through OH and our local
healthcare providers. I am very open that I have used these
before when struggling with a very upsetting work experience.
We are all under a lot of pressure and deal with situations that
the majority of the population never think about. I would urge
anyone who feels like they want to talk about an issue to seek
help early. I also feel that we have a duty to each other to be
aware that not everyone deals with events in the same way and
that we are a team who will support each other. We are unable to
look after our patients and provide the quality of care they
deserve if we are not able to look after each other. As a unit
we do a good job of supporting and helping each other and I
think that is something we can be proud of.
Tragedy and irreversible consequences are unfortunately not
confined to just the patients we treat and an awareness of each
other and how we can help each other may prevent someone making
a mistake.
