Octavia quirked a brow as Vinyl hastily snatched up another
glass... And then another, making it her fifth. Judging by the
content of the conversation and the way Vinyl started to turn
red at the cheeks, there was no doubt she was already under. The
cellist downed her fourth glass and reached for her fifth,
looking at it closely. Just what was in these things? Maybe
Vinyl had made hers stronger or something, because there was no
way she could already be under and Octavia be just fine. The
mare shrugged, following suit as she threw back the fifth glass.
"Prude? Who are ya callin' prude? I'm not opposed to talking
about it, but I'm just sayin' how I feel." The mare paused,
blinking a few times as everything started to sway in and out of
focus. And then it hit her, and hit her hard without warning...
Octavia slumped back a bit, now visibly relaxed as she began to
giggle to herself. "And let me tell you... I feel good."
Within just a few seconds, Octavia's demeanor completely changed
from a stoic, uptight nature to a loose, bubbly one. The shots
didn't taste strong... But if they were enough to put Vinyl over
the edge, then Octavia may have been a bit past that point. The
mare allowed her ears to fall flat, sitting all the way back as
she crossed her hind hooves. "I don't hate you, Vinyl. I'm just
teasing. I like to have fun, too, ya know. I remember staying up
listening to the new Daft Pony album... Besides, you're always
making jokes at my expense." Octavia stuck her own tongue out,
mimicking Vinyl's actions. "But seriously, I appreciate your
efforts. You're always looking out for me, even when I'm in one
of my moods. Thank you." Octavia grinned, meeting Vinyl's gaze
with her own before looking at the last two shots on the tray,
debating whether or not she should finish it out.

Vinyl giggled alongside Octavia as the mare across from her said
she was feeling a good, a triumphant, if slightly goofy, grin
playing on her lips. The grin persisted even as Octavia began to
say she was only teasing, resulting in a hoof wave in dismissal
as she slumped a little bit as well, her back hooves
accidentally brushing against Octavia's before she readjusted
herself so that wouldn't happen again. She gaze back at Octavia
from across the table when the mare looked her way, carefree
grin still plastered on her face as the buzz from the drinks
       elated her mood.
"Hey, what do best buds do, right? You're, like, one of my best
friends. I'd never leave you hangin' when you needed me, bestie.
But really, don't sweat it. I know you'd have my back when I
needed you. You're reliable, so I know I can count on you. So
anyway, that's a shmancy jello case you got there, 'Tavi.
Looks... shinier than usual. You lookin' to impress somepony
with your.... equipment?" she drawled into another lewd giggle,
back hooves once again accidentally brushing against Octavia's,
causing her to grunt rather unattractively as she shifted a
little bit further to the side to try and avoid that from being
a thing again in the future.

Octavia didn't really pay any mind to the accidental brushes. In
fact, she didn't seem to notice at all as she simply remained
mostly stationary, now much too dizzy to move all that much.
"Good grief, Vi, what did you put in this stuff? I don't think
I've ever gone this far down with a hoof-full of shots." She
shook her head a bit, but the mare still couldn't help but
giggle at the most trivial of things, like how she was too lazy
to move at this point. "Awww... You're not just saying that
because I gave you the other half of my sandwich, are ya?"
Octavia snickered and lolled her head backwards on the flimsy
headrest, closing her eyes as she continued to speak. "That case
isn't the only thing that's fancy. You should see what's inside,
but I'm too... bleh... to open it up right now. It's a Malaysian
Blackwood cello with an ivory fingerboard. Mother of Pearl
inlays. Brand new. I was going to play it at a friend's wedding,
which was supposed to be today. Been planning on this for the
past few months, getting everything ready. And today, the day of
the wedding, she pulls the rug out from under me without as much
as an explanation. So... I don't know what's going on." The mare
sighed once more, stretching back a bit as she relaxed. She
barely opened her eyes as Vinyl brushed across her a second
time, causing her to giggle as Vinyl readjusted herself for the
second time. "You're fine, Vi. As long as you don't actually
kick me. Because then I'd have to really smack you upside the
head. Or with a bow, if I can get to it."

Vinyl only snickered a little bit at the reminder of Octavia
sharing half of her sandwich with her, lopsided grin still
playing on her face as she squirmed a lil restlessly in her seat
as if unable to get comfortable no matter what she tried,
shortly before flicking her gaze up to Octavia with a deadpan
expression as she began to go into detail about her cello,
boring Vinyl for the most part. She wanted action. She wanted
excitement. She wanted adventure. Not mother of pearl inlays.
       Talk about boooriiiiing.
Still, Vinyl's ears perked up slightly as Octavia mentioned the
wedding she was going to play at being today, followed by what
sounded like disappointment from not knowing what's going on.
Welp, now she knew what was going on, at least. Grunting a
little bit again, Vinyl continued to scoot her way along the
curved booth that made up the corner of the establishment until
she reached Octavia's side. She then tossed a hoof around the
mare's shoulders and reached forward to pick up another shot. "I
get why you were sad, now. You were feelin' a little put out,
and maybe a little lonely 'cause of what happened. Well! I still
say a good time would help you out, but since you're
ad--atom--totally against that idea, I think I'll just settle
for another toast," she finished, her words just a tiny bit
slurred, before lifting up the shot glass a little bit. "To not
bein' alone anymore!" she said before bringing the glass to her
lips and downing it with or without Octavia.
Afterwards, she hummed pleasantly, her hoof still around Octavia
as she slumped against her friend a little bit and a grin still
on her face. "I think your feelin' good's startin' to leak over
to me 'cause let me tell you, I feel goooooooooooood," she
giggled, now intentionally swaying a little bit with Octavia.
"So warm and fuzzy~. If I didn't know any better I'd think you'd
grown fur since the last time we saw each other, 'Tavi. Hehe,
then I could call you a furry. Then again... I have no idea what
kinda stuff you're into. Is this when I figure out you're a lot
       kinkier than you look, bestie?"

Once again, Octavia didn't really mind Vinyl scooting over next
to her, or even as the mare put her hoof around her. "Vinyl..."
she stated as flatly as possible. "We all have fur, smart one.
Good luck finding out that side of me, and you know you're under
the alcohol when you start hitting on me of all ponies, never
mind the slurring and the swaying. What's next? Flirting with my
cello?" Octavia made a valiant attempt at holding a straight
face, but she ultimately broke out in laughter. The cellist
wasn't holding up much better, however... She wanted so bad to
take that last shot, but she knew that she would probably regret
it. She was already having a hard enough time keeping up with
everything. "I'd toast to that... But I don't think I can handle
another one of those. The only reason I'm so 'atom-totally'
against the idea is that I'm waiting for the right pony to come
       along."
Words were starting to escape Octavia as well, and the extra
motion that Vinyl was rocking her into wasn't helping her
situation. She instinctively put her own hoof around Vinyl,
mostly to try and get her to stop moving as much. "Relax, Vi.
Don't let the alcohol talk for you. This was your idea, you
know. At least you didn't have to convince me to take part this
time." She glanced over to the mare for a few moments, studying
her features and expressions before turning her attention to the
other various customers in the establishment. Nopony seemed to
pay them any mind, so Octavia continued to sit still.

"Bahhh, I'm not flirtin' with you. Is there somethin' wrong with
bein' buddy-buddy with you?" she grumbled as she leaned against
Octavia, the hoof around her shoulder gently and repeatedly
patting her. "And you keep waitin' for that 'right pony' to come
along, I hope you're willin' to wait a long time, 'cause that
stuff only happens in books. Really drawn out, sappy, baaaaad
books. And we're not in somepony's story. S'real life we're
talkin' about here." She scrunched her nose again when Octavia
told her to not let the alcohol talk for her, followed by her
reaching out for the last shot glass. "I'llll take that for
you," she said before yoinking the glass and swallowing it
       quickly.
"Now youu listen here," she said as she pushed herself up a
little bit, just enough that she could look Octavia clearly in
the face. "I know exactly what I'm sayin'. I'm not drunk yet.
Gonna need a few more shots for that! But yeah, this isn't the
alcohol talkin' for me. It's me talkin' for me! As if there was
any other way. But yeah," she repeated, reaching a hoof up to
pat Octavia's cheek. "You're a beautiful pony, an' you can do
anythin' you want. Makes me jealous sometimes, you know? S'like,
damn, sure wish I could be that pretty an'--an' eloqua...
elaqui... graceful sometimes." She then inspected Octavia for a
moment before leaning forward and planting a rather graceless
kiss on her cheek before slumping against her and burping
       quietly. "I need more drinks."

Octavia eyed Vinyl cautiously as she spoke, now somewhat miffed
at her cliche` comparison between real life and fairy-tales. It
was something that was thrown around freely in Canterlot to
encourage hard work, but it was like a noose to impressionable,
young fillies that were born and raised there. This is real
life, the would say. Fairy-tales falsely teach that everything
is handed to you on a silver platter, they would say. You have
to work hard to be successful in life... That was true, for the
most part, and that's exactly what Octavia did. She may have
been talented, but she didn't earn her position in the Symphony
due to political ties or mudslinging. She worked for her spot.
But was it really so bad to believe that something good might
happen just... just because? If the stars and the planets
aligned to bestow something good, would somepony still refuse
       it?
"They're not bad books..." the mare finally replied, now eying
Vinyl with a bit of scrutiny as she downed the last shot. "I am
well aware of that notion, Vinyl. It's been told to me all my
life. Still... Is it so wrong for me to think that way?" Octavia
shrugged and turned her head to match Vinyl's gaze, now blushing
fiercely at her rather forward compliments. The unexpected kiss
on the cheek threw the mare through a loop, causing her to blush
even more and giggle uncontrollably. "Okay, okay," she
stuttered, giving Vinyl a rather tight hug... At least until
Vinyl burped... "We'll split it, then. fifty percent you, fifty
percent alcohol, because it's very rare that you're this forward
and... cuddly..." Octavia wasn't quite sure why she used that
particular word, but she felt a bit more relaxed as she leaned
into Vinyl a bit more, now resting her head on her shoulder.
"More drinks might be a bad idea, Vinyl. I don't want to have to
carry you out like last time, considering I'm barely in any
position to walk in a straight line right now. And who says that
you're not beautiful and can't do anything you want? Quite the
contrary, Vinyl. You get tons of dates, and you got your career
off the ground before I did. So sush.~"

Vinyl grumbled a little bit after Octavia said more drinks was a
bad idea, a little disgruntled at being cut off from that sweet
nectar. "Knew I shoulda bought more," she said to herself,
staring longingly at the platter of twelve now-empty shot
glasses. Then, as Octavia began to compliment her as well,
Vinyl's ears perked as she listened to the mare speak, not
pulling away from the little embrace to look at her. Instead,
her gaze remained on the empty reminders in front of her, even
as Octavia fell silent and it was her turn to speak now.
       Definitely could've used more drinks.
"Bleh, yeah, I got all those dates... But... I dunno. Sometimes
they just feel so pointless. Like I'm not gettin' anything out
of 'em. And I only got my career off the ground 'fore you did
'cause my stuff was so... diff'rent. You didn't have that. All
you had was fightin' tooth and hoof to make yourself known." Her
words began to grow more and more dejected as she spoke, until
eventually she was murmuring in disappointment. She stayed
silent for a moment before levitating her glasses off of the
cello's case and over to her, the glasses swaying a little bit
in the air thanks to her tipsiness. She then slipped them onto
her face to hide the melancholy that had begun to creep into her
features, only hoping that Octavia hadn't really noticed or
would comment on it. "You sure we can't get more drinks? If not,
I think I wanna go back home, now..."

Octavia peeped open an eye as the silence began to linger, but
she didn't pull away to look at Vinyl... The mare didn't even
need to look at her to tell that something was digging
underneath her skin. As much as the DJ tried to hide it, Octavia
could see right through her, too. While her sudden change in
mood could be a product of the alcohol, something was telling
Octavia that there was a bit more to the untold story. Just the
way Vinyl spoke and dropped off was enough to tell her something
was wrong, even the way she wore those silly glasses. She
sighed, trying to think of something to say to alleviate the
       mood a bit...
"You make it sound like I have a leg up over you, Vi. Your music
may have been different, and despite how often I tease you about
it, it's still music." Octavia spoke softly, giving her friend a
bit of a hug. "Do you know how many ponies would give their two
front hooves to be as good as you? Just the fact that you're the
best, and still the best, despite all the other artists
clamoring for that number one spot... Now that takes some hard
work and talent. I've been to some of your shows... And let me
tell you, that's something else. I only wish I could get that
kind of turnout for my performances and command that stage like
you do." Octavia grinned, giggling softly to herself as she
recalled the last performance she attended where Vinyl literally
dragged her on stage by the tail for her finale. "You certainly
know how to turn everything into a fun time, even for a pony
like me. Like dragging me on stage." She chuckled again, hugging
       Vinyl even tighter.
After a bit of thought, Octavia pulled away a little bit,
reaching a hoof around to lift Vinyl's shades up a bit to look
clearly into her eyes. "You say this to me all the time, Vi, so
I'm going to say it to you now. What do you do when you start
feeling sad?" She paused for a moment, watching Vinyl's
reaction. "You stop being sad, and you start being awesome
instead!~" The cellist smiled warmly and leaned into her again,
letting Vinyl's shades fall back into their original position.
"We can get more drinks... If you want. As long as we don't get
kicked out. Or we could go back home and relax. Or... We could
stay like this for a little bit. It's... nice. Perhaps we should
do this more often, but without the sad." Octavia moved her
hooves down a bit, now wrapping around Vinyl's waist. "One more
thing... If I don't see you smile, I'm going to be forced to
       tickle you until you do.~"

Continuing in her melancholic slump, Vinyl only listened to
Octavia with her ears folded down, her head turned away a little
bit from the mare she was against. Despite what was being said,
she didn't really feel like she had it better off than Octavia
did. Just seemed like she was still in that number one spot that
was mentioned because of ponies' nostalgia, and the fact that
she was already so famous. And the shows... the shows were just
gimmicks. Part of the entertainment. When ponies went to see
Octavia, they went to see her, not the pretty lights and
pyrotechnics... Still, Octavia's mentioning of dragging her onto
the stage by the tail earned her a small smile that lasted for a
moment before her jealousy and sadness wiped it away again.
Then, as Octavia pushed her shades up a little bit, Vinyl
averted her eyes away from her friend, a little ashamed of
herself and how she was acting. She stayed this way until
Octavia asked what Vinyl usually said when Octavia was feeling
sad, causing Vinyl to make eye contact with her for a moment.
'You stop being sad, and you start being awesome instead', was
the answer, which... she guessed she really should follow, if
that's what she was going to tell other ponies to do. She
inhaled slowly through her nostrils before releasing the breath
in a quiet sigh, just before Octavia said she'd have to tickle
Vinyl if she didn't smile. "Maybe you can do that when we get
back home," she said as she hugged Octavia back in thanks before
releasing her hold on the mare and beginning to scoot back
around the booth so she could stand up.
"A good laugh'll prolly do me good. Then we can keep sittin'
like that again after since you enjoyed it, I guess," she said
with a slight shrug, swaying gently in place as she waited for
the mare to join her so they could leave the bar. "Just think
maybe it's time for a change of scenery." She then stood and
waited for Octavia to join her before walking with her outside
and into Ponyville, doing her best to walk without stumbling.
"Thanks, Octy. Guess I kinda ruined the whole 'tryin' to cheer
you up thing'. S'just... stuff that's been botherin' me for a
while that I didn't really expect to be dealin' with today." She
paused for a moment before glancing over to the mare, a very
faint smile on her lips. "Still doesn't fix the whole me bein'
jealous of you bein' a beautiful pony thing, though. I mean, how
many guys've I had to run off for you when we were both in
Canterlot 'cause they were bein' snobs an' you didn't wanna deal
       with 'em? Way too many."
