Derailed Plans
By: Octavia Melody Date: January 28, 2014, 1:37 am
---------------------------------------------------------
The day had started so well for Octavia... She arrived in
Ponyville earlier that morning practically bubbling with
excitement. One of her childhood mare-friends was planning to
get married, and the bride-to-be had requested the cellist to
perform for the couple as they walked the isle. Octavia happily
agreed, of course, and had been looking forward to this day for
well over four months. She had everything in order: music, play
order, a couple of gifts, and even a brand new cello that she
was saving to play just for this occasion. But when Octavia
arrived at her friend's house that afternoon, she was shocked to
find out that the wedding was called off. At first, Octavia was
disappointed, but then became somewhat disgruntled as her friend
refused to elaborate and told her to go home. Just like that,
all of her plans fell apart without so much as a single word or
explanation between the two, leaving the cellist outside without
her wits...
Far to frustrated with the sudden turn of events, Octavia
thought about returning home right then and there... Having just
got off the train, however, she really didn't want to be trapped
again so soon. Octavia fumed to herself as she walked around,
eventually wandering into one of the local taverns. The mare
normally didn't have any interest in bars or clubs as she was
more keen to Canterlot's more "refined" establishments, but she
could at least sit down and cool off for a bit. Making a beeline
straight to the nearest empty corner, Octavia propped her cello
up against the wall and ordered a couple drinks just to take the
edge off. Patiently waiting for her drink, she payed little to
no attention to other customers as they entered and departed.

Yawning quietly, Vinyl reached up and took the headset from its
spot over her ears and set it down nearby before leaning back in
her chair and stretching, her front hooves reaching far up into
the air as she tensed her body. She let out a relieved sigh
afterwards before hopping out of her chair and shaking herself
slightly and lifting a hoof to rub at her eyes. Well, she'd done
enough practicing for one day, she told herself. Besides, the
song she had been working on wouldn't get any better with her
feeling this tired. She needed to get out and get a breath of
fresh air. That'd help a lot.
What better place to go to liven up a little bit than a bar? Go
for a nice drink or two, meet a couple of ponies... With her
destination clear, Vinyl retrieved her glasses and slid them
over her eyes before stepping outside and towards a tavern she
could relax a bit at. It didn't take her very long to find it
and after stepping inside, she moved towards the bar to order a
drink, but paused when she saw somepony familiar in the corner
of the establishment. Now wearing a half-grin, Vinyl stepped
closer to this mare before slipping into the seat opposite of
Octavia. "Well, for somepony who doesn't like these kinds of
places, I'm surprised to see you here, 'Tavi. Welcome back to
Ponyville--what the hay's wrong with you?" she asked after
noticing the expression on her friend's face, one hoof reaching
up to lift the glasses up from her own eyes. "Look like you just
got dumped by somepony."

Octavia had her eyes closed, tapping her hooves lightly on the
table to go along with the song that was playing in her head,
mouthing the lyrics silently as she waited patiently on her
drink. Just then, a familiar voice reached her ears... The mare
opened her eyes, her expression nearly unchanging as as Vinyl
Scratch slid into the seat opposite of hers. The cellist might
have smiled, and her saddened lavender eyes may have brightened
up a bit, but it would have only lasted for a very brief moment.
Octavia sat in brooding silence as her friend spoke, sighing
quietly as she leaned back in her seat. It wasn't that she was
ungrateful for Vinyl's sudden appearance, but she really didn't
feel like explaining the situation in full. Instead, her gaze
fell to the table...
"Well," Octavia began, exhaling yet again. "Let's just say I had
a bad day. And this was the closest place I could sit and relax
for a few minutes. Perhaps a drink or two." The cellist glanced
up to Vinyl, wondering if she would push the issue. "And no, I
didn't get dumped, although it feels that way somewhat. I just
had to come in sit for awhile. If I had known you were back in
town, I would have come by sooner." Her words were rather dull
and apathetic as she tried to conceal her emotions. She was good
at hiding her feelings from others, but Vinyl was perhaps the
only one who could see right through her mask. Perhaps that's
just what happens when you live with somepony long enough.

Vinyl crossed her hooves over her chest as Octavia responded to
what had been said, talking about how she'd 'just' had a bad
day. Idly, Vinyl chewed on the inside of her lip as she assessed
the situation and the mare she was so familiar with, before
finally coming up with the conclusion that something was
bothering 'Tavi a lot more than she was letting on. And judging
by the fact that she seemed to be avoiding the subject, well, it
meant she didn't want to talk about it. Didn't mean Vinyl
couldn't try to help get her mind off of whatever was going on,
though.
"Aw, it's no big deal, 'Tavi," Vinyl grinned as she leaned
forward, uncrossing her hooves and laying them on the table in
front of her. "I knew you'd be back sooner or later. I know you
just can't get enough of me," she winked before levitating her
glasses back onto her eyes. "Anyway, it doesn't sound like a
drink 'or two's gonna help you get past this rut you're in.
Let's celebrate you bein' back!" she cheered before pushing
herself out of her seat and trotting over to the nearby bar.
Moments later, she returned with a platterful of shots--an even
number for the both of them. "Got us some Melon Balls since I
know you don't like the bitter stuff. Whaddya wanna toast to,
'Tavi?"

It was a strange silence... One that felt like something more
should be said, but Octavia kept drawing blanks. Perhaps all
could be explained later when she wasn't feeling as bad. The
cellist gazed blankly at Vinyl as the white mare looked her
over. She was trying to figure out whether to pursue the subject
or not, no doubt... While Octavia was very adamant on
safeguarding her feelings and emotions. she somewhat felt
inclined to open up a bit more to Vinyl. Perhaps it was because
they knew each other for a long time... Or maybe because Vinyl
rarely took no for an answer and wouldn't quit bugging her until
she finally relented. The moment Vinyl uttered the word "Tavi",
Octavia's gaze snapped up to meet Vinyl's in a modest glare. She
hated it when ponies shortened her name, and Vinyl knew that.
However, over the years of Vinyl deliberately doing it anyway,
Octavia grew accustomed to it.
"You tease," the cellist stated flatly before Vinyl had gotten
up. "And what is there to 'get' of you? More loud noises and
sleepless nights? You still look ridiculous in those shades, by
the way. At least it's not that awful sombrero." As soon as
Vinyl had turned to go to the bar, Octavia grinned to herself.
Despite her rough day, Vinyl's presence seemed to make her feel
a bit better, especially since they haven't seen each other in
awhile. The cellist knew that she was going to try and cheer her
up, but she didn't quite know what Vinyl had planned until she
brought the tray full of shots over... Octavia's jaw dropped.
Just what was she thinking? "I... Uh..." She took a breath to
regain her composure. *Ahem*... "Okay, 'Vi', let's toast to the
fact you still have a brain between your ears. I've lost count
of how many times I've smacked you upside the head after calling
me that." Octavia couldn't help but grin after that remark. She
never actually hit her, but it did lead into spontaneous play
fights from time to time.

Vinyl just kept grinning as she waited for Octavia's suggestion
for a toast, one hoof already wrapped around one of the small
glasses in anticipation. She only laughed when Octavia suggested
a toast to still having a brain, then nodded as she raised her
shot glass in the air. "To not being a potato!" she cheered once
more before bringing the shot to her lips and downing it in a
quick gulp. She returned the shot back to the platter after,
horn glowing for a moment as she levitated her glasses off of
her head and folded them around Octavia's cello.
"You totally like it, 'Tavi. There's not much else of an
explanation for it, nevermind how hard you've laughed with some
of the lighthearted fights we used to get into. Heck, I still
haven't gotten a replacement for that lamp that was broken in
the last battle we had," she said, awkwardly rubbing the back of
her neck with a hoof, a feigned grin of innonence on her face.
"So how was the snobbery in Canterlot? They still haven't rubbed
off on you I see, but things weren't too bad there, were they?
Do I hafta kick a flank or two?" she asked as she reached a hoof
out for another shot glass.

"To not... being... a potato..." Octavia repeated, raising a
questioning brow as she followed Vinyl's lead and downed a quick
glass before setting it back on the tray. While she indeed
enjoyed the sweeter drinks, these particular shots weren't very
strong. The mare counted the remaining shots, half wondering if
she could actually keep up with Vinyl and her ridiculous
tolerance to alcohol. Or maybe she simply had better
self-control. That was hard for Octavia to believe, but the
first and last time she tried to go hoof to hoof with the DJ,
the cellist ended up passing out in somepony's backyard... Just
the thought of it still made her stomach queasy. After taking
another glass, Octavia holds it up to look it over before
glancing back to Vinyl.
"I told you that I would replace it. Don't worry about it. As
far as Canterlot goes..." The gray mare sighs and downed the
second glass. "It's the same old song and dance. It's not too
bad, but then again, I was raised there. You just kind of get
used to it. I can be a snob, too. You know that, especially when
we first moved in. We were like territorial cats. Regardless,
there are no flanks to kick this week. They'd just send their
lawyers to fight for them, anyways. How was your trip? Did you
just get back?"

Vinyl only scowled a little bit when Octavia said there were no
flanks to kick, seemingly thoroughly disappointed by this
revelation. She returned the second, now-empty shot glass to the
platter before sitting back to just chill for a few moments. She
didn't mind getting a little buzzed--maybe even a teensy bit
drunk--but she didn't want to do it too quickly. She had to help
Octavia get her mind off of things after all. Idly, Vinyl tugged
on the end of some of her bangs, shortly before glancing past
her hoof to Octavia as she spoke.
"Only been back a few days, yeah. Just got finished with a
little bit of work and practice, so I figured I'd reward myself
with a bit of relaxation. And now that you're back it's time to
celebrate! Trip was alright, though. Had to deal with some
really weird fan following back in Los Pegasus though. I think
some of them were worshipping me," she said with a slight
scrunch of her nose before pulling her hoof away from her bangs
to stop tugging on the end of them. "I've got some really
strange fans. Anyway, yeah, you used to be kinda snobbish, but
still, even then you weren't anything like those prudes in
Canterlot. You burp the wrong way around them and they act like
you just insulted their name or something like that. Actually, I
take that back, you used to be kind of like that, too, didn't
you? I think you did. Unless I'm thinking of somepony else. I
need another drink," she said, reaching out to take up another
shot glass and down it quickly.
"Regardless, I know exactly what you need to get you feeling
better. Some hot pone on pone action. There any stallions around
here that catch your interest, 'Tavi? Or mares, too," she added
quickly, not wanting to exclude the fairer sex from the
equation. "Nothing wrong with appreciating another mare."

"Gotta be careful about those particular fans. Doesn't quite
help that we're mares, either. While I don't think I've met
anypony that's worshiped me, as you put it, I've run into some
like-minded ponies. Mostly stallions who can't keep their hooves
to themselves. And I don't have an 'entourage' like most ponies
in the Symphony. Can't even take care of themselves. But they
sure can play." Octavia swirled the tiny glass around in her
hoof, her gaze dropping down to the table once more. "I might
have been a snob," the mare continued as Vinyl threw another
glass back. "But do you know what you were? Stubborn as a mule.
I couldn't get you to do chores if my very life depended on it.
And you still blast that stereo in the middle of the night. I
understand louder is better with you, but does it have to be set
at MAX all the darn time?"
Smiling sheepishly, Octavia started to drink her third glass,
only to nearly choke as Vinyl popped off her last comment. She
swallowed hard, half coughing and half laughing at the
unexpected question as she set the empty glass down. "Excuse me?
Where the hay did that come from, Vinyl? Are you drunk already?"
Octavia cleared her throat and once again regained her
composure. Just what was Vinyl trying to accomplish now? Then
again, Octavia never really knew with her... "First, I don't
just 'hook up' and immediately subject myself to that kind of
treatment. It's degrading, and I would at least like to know
somepony before sharing any act of intimacy. Second, you know
mare couples aren't very common, right? I suppose there's
nothing wrong with 'appreciating' a mare, as you so eloquently
put it, but I can't imagine how they go through life. And
Celestia help them if they go anywhere like Canterlot. They'd
eat them alive. The hay brought that up, anyway?" She reached
for a fourth glass, waiting for Vinyl's response before drinking
it just in case she tried to catch her off guard again.

Showing no signs of embarrassment at having asked what she did,
Vinyl just kept watching Octavia with a slight grin at what was
said, though the grin was significantly less than what it had
been before she started speaking. Figured that she'd shoot that
idea down so quickly. Vinyl pretty much figured she'd do so, but
it was at least worth a shot, right? Then she mentioned mare
couples not being common, making Vinyl wonder what rock Octavia
had been under. Vinyl had seen plenty of mare couples. Then
again, she did frequent clubs and such more than Octavia did, so
maybe that had something to do with it.
Then, Octavia reached for her fourth glass out of six, causing
Vinyl to immediately reach out and grab another one to down it
with it, determined not to let the 'lightweight' Octavia
outdrink her. She grinned a little bit at the fuzziness the
vodka within the Melon Balls had begun to provide, her ears
fluttering some. "You being sad's what brought that up, like I
just said. 'Scuse me for trying to give you a little bit of a
boost. But I imagine mare couples go through life just like a
hetero couple would. Just with some interesting deeds under the
sheets," she said with a shrug, as if that was perfectly decent
conversation. "Besides, don't knock it 'til you try it and all
that. 'Course, we'd still have to actually get you in bed with
somepony. But fiiiiiiiiiine, I can tell you're gonna be a prude
about this, so I'll stop. As much as I think something like that
would... hehe... do you good."
She beamed at herself for a moment, apparently proud of what she
said, before taking up another shot. "Down the hatch!" she
cheered to herself before downing her fifth shot in the short
amount of time that she'd had access to the platter. "And for
your information, missy, I don't blast the stereo in the middle
of the night that much anymore. The last time I did it, you were
still up with me, so there," she snarked, sticking her tongue
out at Octavia. "Besides, what's with all the Vinyl hate, 'Tavi?
Did I do somethin' to make you mad again?"
