Re: Play by Play

Blossom took a few steps back as he started to practically herd
her back into the theatre, a wave of disappointment going over
her as she realized what Bastion was trying to do, "C'mon
Bastion, I'm not going back in there if the pony who wanted to
watch this doesn't want to watch it. That's just selfish of me
to make you wait..." Still he kept pushing her towards the
theatre room, insisting that she go and finish what she had
started. There was no point now, she had already left the
theatre and probably missed out on something crucial, so the
play is now to her what it was to him.
After a little bit more gentle pushing, Blossom decided that she
had enough, and pushed back herself, "Non, I'm not going back in
there, Bastille, and even if you carry me in there, I will walk
right back out. I've already missed enough to where I can say
that I shouldn't bother going back in, and I want to do other
things now." She glared at him in the hopes that he would
understand that she would not be swayed otherwise in her
decision, before adding in a facetious challenge, "Besides, I
see through your ruse. You're just scared that I'm going to beat
you in this sparring match and make you pay the bill, and you
are trying to delay this as long as possible to make yourself
ready while I waste away in a dark room with expensive
upholstery just to get an upper hoof."

Blossom's reprimanded immediately ended with Bastion hanging his
head in shame with his ears drooped, now feeling thoroughly
guilty for ruining the play for her like that. Why couldn't he
have just walked back in? He should've known she'd come looking
for him, and that she would've tried suggesting that they do
something else. And she sounded like she enjoyed it so much.
Frustrated now to the verge of tears, Bastion only kept his gaze
on the floor under him, not even her playful words that followed
helping to do much for him.
"I'm sorry, Blossom," he forced out past the lump in his throat.
"I didn't mean to ruin the play for you... You just sounded so
excited, and I thought since I'd missed so much of it... It'd be
pointless to go back in there." He tried with all of his might
to keep from blinking despite how much his eyes began to burn,
knowing that would be the last straw that would send a couple of
tears down his cheeks, and he had to be stronger than that.
Especially since he was only just feeling guilty and frustrated
with himself. "I really want to make this up to you. You spent
all of those bits for an expensive ticket to see this, only to
have me make you miss out on its ending..." He finally looked up
to her, sad eyes locking onto hers. "Please? I feel bad enough
as it is..."

Blossom's challenging expression softened as she heard the
sincerity in Bastion's tone when he said he was sorry that he
had ruined the play for her. It was a rarity to see him like
this, and it was such a contrast to how he usually was, it was
actually a bit of a shock. This lively, comedic, and stubborn
stallion sounded as though he was on the verge of breaking down,
but stubbornly trying to hold back tears as much as he could.
The last straw for her came when he looked at her with those
bleary red eyes and that sad expression, and upon seeing that,
her heart dropped a little. He wanted to desperately make it up
to her for something that he didn't have any control over, when
right now, all she wanted was for him to feel better.
"Bastion, it isn't that big of a deal... you tried something and
you didn't like it, there's no reason to be so down about it."
She put a hoof on his shoulder and continued, "And so what if I
spent money on this? It's called disposable income for a reason,
and I came here knowing full well that these kinds of things
aren't for everyone..." she paused before asking in a softer
tone, "Would a hug make you feel better, big guy?" After his
answer, she leaned forward, wrapping her front legs over his
shoulders and squeezing him tightly. As she hugged him, she
whispered to him, "If you believe that finding some way to make
it up to me will make you feel better, then we'll find something
that we can both agree on, or you can surprise me if you really
want to. Right now, I just want my friend and comrade to not be
feeling so down on himself, bien?"

Bastion averted his gaze once more after Blossom began speaking,
swallowing hard past the lump built in his throat. She was...
turning down his request that she go back and finish the play.
His heart sunk at that, as did his shoulders, now beating
himself up and berating himself once more, despite what she was
saying about knowing these things weren't for everypony. That
didn't help much. Her excitement over seeing how the play would
end was still fresh in his mind, and he felt horrible for what
he'd done. At her question of if he wanted a hug, he paused for
a moment before shrugging half-heartedly and mumbling "I...
guess..." to her, before just standing there as she wrapped her
hooves around him.
Well, at least she was willing to let him try and make it up to
her. Somehow. How would he even do that? Buy her something?
Chocolates, flowers, or teddy bears wouldn't work, nor would
they be sufficient repayment... Pay for her to attend the play
again? She probably wouldn't want to go alone, though... His
eyes refocused when he finally realized he'd left a question she
asked him hanging in the air, followed by him lifting a hoof to
rub his eyes dry as he pulled away from the embrace and moved to
lead the way outside, albeit despondently. "Yeah... I'll try, I
guess," he responded vaguely about her request of him not
feeling down, not really wanting to lie once more. That probably
wouldn't be happening right now. When they got outside, he
walked for a little bit in silence before glancing over to her
and asking, "So... what now?"

Giving him one final squeeze before she let go, Blossom followed
Bastion outside, her look of concern once more returning as he
answered her in a very vague manner. She really didn't enjoy
seeing the gentle giant that he was become so downcast and
depressed, and she hoped that the idea of the opportunity to
make it up to her would be something to lift his spirits, but
just how easy would it be for him? She was a little particular
about what she accepted, not to mention that he would try to go
for something of equal value to the ticket she bought, which was
incredibly difficult, since there wasn't much that cost that
much. Even she didn't know what she wanted yet, which was not
very promising at all. Resigning that it would take some time
for him to repay her, she simply followed him. Blossom may have
to help Bastion find a way to repay the promise.
After a bit of walking, Bastion turned and asked her what they
were going to do now. She hummed in thought as she tapped her
chin; where was a place that they could both enjoy reasonably at
this hour? The sun was already low on the horizon, and they
should be heading back to the barracks soon so they would be
able to get up for their next shift, not to mention get their
little contest finished, "It would probably be a good idea to go
back to the barracks, what with our early shift tomorrow. Did
you want to stop by the fountain again on the way back? Maybe
just sit there for a while and watch the sunset?"

Blossom mentioned getting back to the barracks because of their
early shift the next morning, earning a slight nod from Bastion
as he turned his gaze down to the ground below him. She then
asked about stopping by the fountain and watching the sunset, to
which he glanced up to her for a moment before turning back to
the center of the city to lead the way back there. It sounded
like something she wanted to do, and he wasn't of the mind to
disappoint her a second time that night. Over and over in his
mind, he thought about that moment during the intermission when
she'd seemed so excited about watching the rest of the play,
making him just feel so horrible about the whole thing every
time it happened.
Eventually, as they reached the fountain, he half-heartedly sat
himself down, facing the sun, and just watched for a few moments
before finally speaking up. "I'll give you the bits for the
meal," he told her, not really bothering to look over to her. "I
think it was my turn to pay anyway. Are you sure there's no way
I could convince you to go back and finish the play sometime?
What if I paid for a ticket for you? Or... Got somepony else to
go with you? Or what if I went with you again and sucked it up?"

Blossom sat down next to Bastion as he looked out over to the
sunset. Still he was pretty glum about the recent events, and
his solemn demeanor continued as he sat and watched the sunset
with her. She had hoped that such a scene would at least allow
him some opportunity to get over the whole ordeal with some of
his thinking, but apparently, he was thinking about the wrong
thing entirely. She glanced over to him as he spoke up, saying
that he would pay for the meal and saying that he thinks it was
his turn to pay, as well as going over all sorts of different
ways where he could try to make it up to her, and all of them
involved paying for something for her.
"And what if I think that it is my turn to pay? I can't, on my
honour, just -let- you pay for something that I don't know if I
owe. What of the contest that we had promised while we sparred?
Weren't we supposed to decide who would be paying for the meal
through that?" Giving him a pointed and questioning look, she
added, "And no, there is no way that you are convincing me to go
back to see the rest of that play. The tickets are expensive
enough as it is, and I made my choice when I left the theatre
that I would not see the ending to it. How about this..." she
began, poking his shoulder, "You can stop thinking about how you
want to repay me, and in return, when the time comes that I see
something reasonable that you can do for me, I will let you
know. How does that sound?"

Blossom's reaction to Bastion's offer to pay for the meal was
about expected. Of course she wouldn't just let him do that and
let everything go smoothly. But it was just wishful thinking
that maybe she'd go for that. She was just much too independent
to consider something like that... Then, she told him that she
wasn't ever going to see the ending to that play, causing his
heart to sink even further than it already had. He really messed
things up this time, didn't he? His ears remained folded down as
Blossom continued, telling him the compromise she came up with,
before sighing quietly through his nostrils when she finished
and asked his thoughts. "I... Guess that works," he mumbled to
her, gaze falling down to the water in the fountain beside him.
"Doesn't really make me feel better, but it's better than
nothing..." He then fell silent, just staring down at the water
next to him with his shoulders slumped and ears still folded
down.

Blossom continued to look at Bastion, her worried expression
getting the better of her as she listened to his sullen tone and
his very depressed words. This was going to probably affect him
for a long time, she feared, and this kind of stress was
something that might actually affect him while he was on duty,
which would be a terrible thing. Royal Guards were required to
be at their best at all hours of the day, and if they were to
let things keep them depressed as they worked, then they would
not be able to stay on task throughout the day as their
attention would be divided towards their troubles. No matter
what she tried though, he was going to let this eat at him the
entire time, so the best she could do is hope that he was able
to get over it through the rest of the night, or just wait until
a better opportunity presented itself, and right now, the only
opportunity seemed to be in their sparring match, but even then,
would that be enough to cheer him up?
Blossom grasped Bastion's shoulder and shook it lightly as she
said, "Ne soyez pas si triste, Bastille. If you keep being sad
like this, you are going to make me sad." She smirked at him
playfully, hoping that it would at least rub off on him as she
said in a humorous tone, "Then we will both be sad. Could you
imagine, Aurora Noctem, sad? C'mon, now I will try to cheer you
up. If there is one thing I cannot stand, it is to see my
partner sad." She got up and stood in front of him, doing her
best to get his attention to focus only on her, though with her
comparatively smaller size, it must have looked somewhat
comical, "And we should get back to the barracks, oui? What
would cheer you up, Bastille? You can tell me, I am your
comrade."

Bastion only sighed as Blossom shook his shoulder, not really
wanting to look her in the eye or continue this any longer. At
this point, he just wanted to go to sleep and get on with the
next day... But even then, he wasn't sure if he'd really feel
that much better, since he'd still know it was his fault things
had turned out like they did. Even as she stood in front of him,
he only just kept his gaze down, not seeming all that affected
by her attempts at humor and cheering him up.
"I don't have any ideas, Blossom. If you're really set on this,
then we'll find something that we can both agree on, or you can
surprise me if you really want to. Right now... I just want to
sleep," he half-quoted Blossom from earlier, pushing himself up
onto his hooves to begin walking back to the barracks. "We can
spar another day..." He told her before falling silent all the
way back. Even as they stepped back into the barracks, Bastion
went straight to his bunk before climbing under the sheets and
closing his eyes in an attempt to fall asleep, even though he
knew his tossing mind would only just keep him up for a while
yet.
