Re: Play by Play

As soon as Bastion removed his hoof from her shoulder, she
scooted backwards away from the ledge and stood up, brushing
herself off as she turned to look back towards the way they
came. That was an oddly relaxing little way to spend the
afternoon, even if she would have thought it wasteful before. At
his thanks for debating with him, Blossom replied, "If there is
anything I enjoy talking about more than Prance and Prench
culture, Bastille, it is combat tactics. If you ever want to
discuss hypothetical situations with me, I'd hear them anyday."
She nodded to him with a smile as she followed him through the
streets, towards the theatre where the two of them would be
watching this play that Bastion wanted to see.
"Oui, I found it to be quite relaxing too. I had no idea time
could fly by so fast just sitting in one place." She didn't want
to admit that she was terrified of falling the entire time. If
there was one visage that she wanted to keep for herself, it was
that she was a proud and fearless warrior. What kind of warrior
is afraid of heights? A terrible one, yet long falls still made
her uneasy. The idea that Bastion could have fallen asleep up
there was ludicrous to her, and she reflected that with a tone
of shock and surprise, "How could you fall asleep up there? Are
you not worried that you might accidentally lean forward too
much and slip off the edge, and not wake up in time to be able
to catch yourself?"

Bastion continued grinning a bit as Blossom mentioned being able
to talk with her about hypothetical situations any day, excited
that maybe there was something new for them that could help pass
the time while they were on duty. It would be fun, and Bastion
would be appreciative of it, especially since some of those
shifts just standing in front of a doorway could get so dull...
Still, he shrugged that line of thought off as Blossom asked how
he could manage to fall asleep in such a place without fear of
falling over.
"I dunno. I never really thought about it. I think heights like
that are spectacular, and I feel like I'd be more likely to fall
to the side rather than forward. Besides, you were there leaning
against me. If anything, I probably wouldn't rested against you
more than anything else." He shrugged again before looking
forward so he could continue leading the way to the theatre the
play was at. Upon reaching said theater with Blossom some time
later, he went inside with her and bought their tickets before
heading further inside so they could take their seats. A
childlike grin of excitement was on Bastion's face as he sat,
almost shaking with giddiness as he thought about what it would
be like. "Never thought I'd be this excited for a play. There'll
be an orchestra for music, right? Will they have effects and
stuff too? I hope they have somepony who screams 'hero' for the
main protagonist!"

Following Bastion into the theatre where he bought their
tickets, Blossom looked around at the theatre. Usually one could
get a good idea of what plays were put on here just by the
general theme of the theatre, and this one looked a little more
high end than some of the others that she had been to, thus
inferring that the general feel of the play would be a lot more
high-brow than others. Immediately, she had a feeling that this
was not going to turn out well for Bastion, being a pony who
enjoyed thrills, humour, and action. Surely with a play similar
to the story that he had described it could at least cater to
his need for stimulation. Hopefully.
Inching their way across the seats, Bastion led them right in
the centre of the rows of seating, most likely one of the better
seats available. When they arrived, Blossom sat down in her
chair, her trimmed tail going around her flank and over the side
of the cushion as she leaned back. Bastion's giddiness was quite
the sight though, and as he asked her so many questions, she
could only remember back to when she first saw a play... and how
utterly underwhelming it was compared to her expectations.
Whispering to him, she said, "I suppose we'll have to wait and
find out, hmm? I can see an orchestral pit up front there, so
there will be music, and as for actors..." she shrugged, "I'm
not familiar with any actors in Canterlot." The lights dimmed a
little and the spotlights pointing towards the stage warmed up,
and the crowd of ponies seated gave a round of applause as the
play was about to be underway.

Well, the play started a lot sooner than he'd expected to.
Apparently they'd arrived at just the exact time they'd needed
to, as just moments after Blossom stopped talking, the room
dimmed and the stage lit up, telling Bastion things were going
to be underway soon. Grinning to himself, he appluaded along
with the rest of the ponies before sitting back in his chair a
little bit, ears perked in excitement. That excitement lasted
for about a quarter of the play, however, as he quickly began to
realize it wasn't going to be quite like he'd imagined. It was
slower than he hoped for, and while the premise of the hero
coming back to his home and heading up a resistance to fight for
his home... It was ruined by a slow moving plot, drawn out
political schemes, and a romance story that he just couldn't
connect with at all. All of these things combined resulted in
him becoming more and more drowsy through the play until, about
halfway through it, he began nodding off untintentionally as he
slumped a bit in his seat.

Well this was certainly a lot more than Blossom expected. A deep
story, characters with different discernable motives, and an
absolutely sublime love story that broke up the back room
politics nicely. The theatre did not disappoint, there was some
talent behind this, and it made it worth it to her. She wouldn't
even be here if it wasn't for Bastion suggesting that they come
here in the first place. Speaking of which, how was he holding
up? There was barely any action already, but maybe he was
getting into it still. A quick glance over to him didn't do much
for her in terms of reassurance; he appeared to be a little
drowsy. Intermission came shortly afterwards, the audience
seating lighting up so that the ponies that needed to use the
restroom could go.
Meanwhile, Blossom turned to Bastion, practically gushing as she
said, "C'est magnifique, Bastille! I'll be honest, I didn't
expect this play to be as intricate as it is! I think you picked
the play très bien! What about you? Do you like it?"

About the time the play had paused to go into intermission,
Bastion had just begun to really fall asleep, at least until
Bastion's mind noticed the difference in atmosphere and caused
him to wake up just a little bit. Drowsily, he opened his eyes
and glanced around, confused for a moment when he saw ponies
walking out of the theater. Had he really just slept through the
whole thing? Wow. He hadn't expected to do that. But at least
now he could get out of his seat, he supposed. Stretching a
little bit, Bastion leaned forward in his seat before glancing
over to Blossom and taking on a slight sheepish look at her
question. "Uh... Well... yeah," he lied, not really wanting to
ruin her enjoyment of the play. "It was... interesting, and I
barely even knew it had gone by so quickly. So, uh... Now that
the play's over, what now?"

"Over?" Blossom questioned, arching an eyebrow quizzically, "The
play's not over yet, silly, It's just gone into intermission,
you know, halfway into the play? So ponies can relieve
themselves and stretch for a bit?" She wasn't exactly sure just
how well he had been keeping tabs on the going ons that happened
on the stage, but judging by his short and incredibly vague
answer, it wasn't all that well. Shaking her head, she said,
"Have you been having a hard time following it? It's a little
bit more complicated than simply one long action scene, I'm
sure, but I'm sure if you are able to hold out until the climax,
I think you'll find you enjoy it immensely." She stretched her
legs over her head, groaning in exertion as she leaned back,
waiting for the play to begin again, "I wonder what that corrupt
senator is going to do next... he made it very clear that he is
not going to be helping the knight with his quests. Oooh, maybe
he's going to to try to dispose of him? The suspense is killing
me." Amidst her musings to herself, she looked over at Bastion
once more, trying to gauge his current mood. Was he disappointed
and regretting his choice, or was he simply tired and sitting in
one spot for a long time just did it for him, especially after
him saying he could fall asleep on a ledge.

Bastion glanced down a little bit in shame when Blossom said the
play wasn't over, him knowing he'd just gotten busted at not
having been paying attention to the play. He glanced away from
her when she asked directly about if he had a hard time
following it, his sheepishness only growing at that. If he
hadn't been vested in it so far, then he wouldn't really know
what was going on, and wouldn't really be immersed in the
story... So even if he did stay, what would be the point? It'd
just be as boring as before, even if something did happen,
because he wouldn't know why it was being done.
"At least it's killing one of us. I just couldn't get into it
for some reason. I guess maybe I'm just not sophisticated enough
for it," he murmured before sighing and standing up from his
seat. "Gonna go to the restroom, stretch my legs a little bit,"
he told her before sidling his way out to the aisle and
disappearing into the main foyer of the theater, just as most of
the ponies who'd disappeared came back to return to their seats.
Apparently the play would be starting back up very soon.

"Oh, uh, alright Bastille," she said as he got up to walk off to
the restroom, "be back soon, intermission is almost over." She
watched him walk out of the theatre before turning to face
forward once more, fiddling with her tail a little bit as she
waited. Soon enough the lights dimmed and the fanfare from the
orchesta to signify the play's starting again began. Surely
Bastion would hear this and be back by now, maybe he needed to
use the restroom. She really didn't want to spend some time
catching him up on a scene.
She continued wondering when he would come back until ten
minutes later, after the next scene. Glancing back at the empty
chair beside her, she sighed as she came to the conclusion that
he wasn't going to be back anytime soon. Maybe he had gotten
lost? No, he wasn't that silly. May as well find him, anyway.
She stood up and starting sidling along the aisle, careful not
to step on anypony as she muttered, "Excusez-moi... désolé...
sorry..." She liberated herself from the tight aisle and
wandered back into the foyer, looking for the bronze coated
stallion she came here with. She didn't have to look hard, he
was sitting on a bench, waiting. Shaking her head a little, she
walked up to him and said, "Yeah, not for everypony." Meeting
his eye with a smirk, she added reassuringly, "Don't worry, it
was starting to get bad for me too. Did you want to go back to
the barracks? You still have a bill you have to pay up for, and
I can't prove it if you are too busy dozing off."

Bastion didn't really have to go to the bathroom. He did need to
stretch his legs a bit, but he just wanted to try and find a way
to get out of the theater without really bothering Blossom. She
was obviously enjoying herself, so he didn't want to upset her
unnecessarily. Now that he was out in the foyer, he just had to
figure out a way to pass the time until the play ended... For
the first few minutes, he just wandered the foyer and examined
the various pictures on the wall, before exhausting all of those
options. Then, deciding that he'd have nothing better to do, he
moved towards a nearby bench and sat down on it, his hooves
crossed over his abdomen as he stared down at the floor in front
of him.
Then, just a few minutes after that, he heard Blossom's voice
call out to him, causing him to look up to her with an
expression of regret. "No, no, no..." he groaned as he pushed
himself up from the bench and stepped over to her. "There's no
way it was getting bad for you. Not after you talked about it
like you did. I'm not letting myself ruin this for you," he said
stubbornly as he began to gently push her back towards the
theater. "I'll carry you back if I have to, but you're not gonna
miss out on what happens because of me."
