Blossom had to laugh a little as Bastion described what his
grandmother had sent to him regarding his partner-in-arms.
Blossom could hardly remember either of her grandmothers, but
she imagined that if they were still around, they would be just
as loving, and somewhat facetious, as Bastion's sounded. In a
way, she felt kind of bad for being an influence in his decision
to come to Prance for his leave when his grandparents looked
after him so much, but surely they would understand one missed
leave. In fact, Bastion's grandmother might be the most okay
with it by the sounds of it. She was probably thinking too much
about it already, if they were in any real trouble or were sick,
Bastion probably would have known by now and requested an
additional leave of absence to be with them.
She smiled as he concluded his description of what his
grandparents thought of her, looking over at the waitress as she
brought over the baked potato and the bowl of potato leek soup.
They both smelled so delicious, and after eight hours standing
in front of a big door in the hot sun, this was a treat. After
the first spoonful into her mouth, getting a good chunk of a
potato and celery in it, she thought for a second before she
said, "Hmm... if we both can't remember, then we both can't
honestly tell each other that either of us paid last. So..." She
grinned at him, "Split the bill now and have a bit of a spar
after the play? Loser gives the winner the rest of the bits to
       pay?"

As Bastion dug into his potato, he kept his gaze held onto
Blossom as he waited for her response, mind working for a little
bit to try and figure who'd paid for the last bill. The system
they'd come to agree on after Bastion insisted for paying for
the bill the first time, followed by Blossom saying only if
she'd be getting the next one. It was what worked for them, so
they just never bothered changing it since neither wanted the
other to be in a 'deficit'. He wasn't expecting her to suggest a
spar to settle who paid the full bill, though. He blinked at her
before shrugging in consent. "Hey, I'm good with that. I
wouldn't mind a little bit of practice. But, fair warning, just
be prepared to take care of the tip, too," he smirked at her in
       response.
He then turned his attention down to his potato and contented
himself with eating it until most of it had gone away and he was
mostly full. Happy, Bastion leaned back in his seat and
inspected Blossom's side of the table to see how much she had
left for her meal before glancing around once more as he waited.
Then, when she finished, he pulled out some bits to pay for his
half of the meal and set them on the table before slipping out
of his seat. "Last chance to back out of that spar, Blossom.
That's probably a fairly big tip to take care of," he joked,
knowing full well the tip the waitress required wasn't really
       that much.

Blossom continued to work away at her soup, savouring the taste
of the many different flavours in the soup and nodding along as
Bastion agreed with her plan, speaking up to his warning, but
paused for a bit at his added remark about being prepared to
take care of the tip. Was this his way of calling his own
victory, in that she would be taking care of the bill and the
tip at the same time? Nevertheless, the comment caught her off
guard as her mind went elsewhere briefly. Hoping that he was too
focused on his potato to notice the slightly different shade of
pink her cheeks turned, she quickly regained her bearings as she
cleared her throat before saying, "I think it is you who needs
to be wary, Bastille. I'm not a pushover like some of the other
       recruits."
The rest of her meal was spent trying to figure out a strategy
that might work against Bastion's usual style of wrestling that
she had observed of him before. He tended to use his weight and
mass to his advantage, pushing his opponents about until it got
to a point where he could grab them, bring them to the ground,
and pin them quickly. It definitely wasn't something that she
could do as well as he could, so she would have to figure
something out that let her avoid getting pinned under him. She
still didn't come up with anything, but her meal was finished,
so she too paid up half of the bill, and her thought process was
interrupted once more as Bastion commented on how large the tip
was going to be. Again her thoughts were knocked askew, and she
laughed nervously, having to tell herself repeatedly what he
really meant as she replied, "Try all you like, you aren't going
to convince me to back away from a challenge, generous tip or
not. I think you know better than anyone else that I can be more
slippery and flexible in a fight than anyone if I want to." With
a friendly little playful shove, she started to walk somewhat
beside and behind him, ready to go to the next place he wanted
       to be.

"Yeah well, slippery as you may be, Salmon, you're still not
taking me down," he stated challengingly, grinning a little
mischievously to her as he lead her past the fountain and down
another street to the plaza he mentioned before. "I still
remember when you tried to use a bucket of water to your
advantage to get me to slip. Still can't believe it worked,
either. What were we even sparring about that time? I can't
remember," he said idly, turning his gaze up in thought as he
       approached the plaza.
Upon reaching it, he took a look around the familiar area before
taking a turn and walking over to some stairs that lead up to
the top of the wall. After reaching the landing of the stairs at
the top, he turned and walked towards the outer edge of the
plaza where the wall overlooked the rest of Equestria, where he
promptly sat himself on his flank and gazed out over the view
for a moment or two. "Here we are. Hope you don't mind heights
there, Salmon. What do you think?" he asked as he swept his hoof
over the sprawling expanse before them, a little smile on his
       face.

"For one," Blossom retorted as they wandered past the fountain,
her tone taking a matter-of-fact nature, "I had pointed out that
that water bucket was there before so that you wouldn't trip on
it, and you tripped on it anyway before slipping on the puddle
of water. I didn't do anything to change the the sparring
match," she paused before saying, "and I think we were sparring
over where we were going to eat that day... or maybe it was who
was doing mop duty. It would explain why the bucket was there in
the first place." Blossom shrugged as she continued to follow
behind Bastion, looking over the fountain as they passed it and
wondering where he was taking her.
He took her up the stairs that led to the ramparts. She didn't
do many patrols here before, as that was reserved usually for
guards specialized in heavy crossbows and the siege weaponry.
Wondering if they were allowed up here, she looked both up and
down the rampart before looking at Bastion, who sat near the
edge of the wall and looked over the countryside. Shuffling her
way over to where he was sitting, she promptly sat herself down
on her flank, a little nervous to be standing on the edge of
such a long drop. Swallowing hard, she forced her gaze up and
said, "Of course I'm not afraid of heights. Not at all." Try as
she might to appreciate the landscape, the pit of her stomach
tossed relentlessly. She forced herself to say, "The countryside
is beautiful..." followed after a few minutes by, "So what do
       you think about up here?"

Bastion only chuckled as Blossom plainly stated she wasn't
afraid of heights, the look on her face telling him that she was
trying her hardest not to look down. Not wanting to be cruel,
Bastion sidled closer to her and set a hoof on her shoulder on
the opposite side of him, his heavy hoof helping to hold her
firmly in place. "Yep, like I said before, this is one of the
best views Canterlot has to offer. I'd be surprised if you
showed me something better," he said, before falling silent as
he just looked out over the scenery before him, the gears in his
head obviously turning as his active mind began to piece
together a scenario down below, a look of pure concentration on
       his face as he did.
That concentration was broken as Blossom asked what he thought
about up here, resulting in him grinning a little bit to her in
excitement. "Well, lots of things, really. But usually when I
come up here, I like to think about tactics," he told her,
looking back down to the country below him. "I like to imagine
two different armies warring down there, and how a battle might
turn out if one army was given orders to do certain things. I
find it really fun, and it's caused me to pick up a book or two
on common tactics. So, yeah, coming up here usually winds up
eating a lot of my time..." He said with a shrug, before
glancing back over to her. "What about you? Do you ever think
about certain things when you're standing guard, or gazing at
       something?"

Blossom jumped a little bit at the hoof at it brushed over her
shoulder, quickly turning her head to see who had decided to
push her over the edge long enough to curse their name as she
fell. No, there was no murder happening here, it was only
Bastion, resting the foreleg on her shoulder farthest from him.
Surely Bastion wouldn't want to push her off the wall, and the
chances of something happening where she did end up staggering
and falling off herself were reduced. He was a big unicorn, and
just one of his limbs was enough to practically root her in
place where she sat, and that was just -resting- it on her.
Perhaps now she could enjoy the scenery, and since Bastion had
recently showered, she didn't mind him being that close either.
She hummed in thought as he mentioned the kinds of things he was
thinking of, trying to envision a battle going on in the
countryside herself. With Bastion's little friendly gesture, she
was at least able to relax and do such. When he asked her what
she usually thought, she answered, "If I see something that I
really like, I usually wonder how it came to be, how did it come
to be, and just... examining it in detail and appreciating it
for what it is. While I'm standing guard though... did I ever
tell you about the time my père took me to a Military Ceremony
here? Where a few heroes and even the Princess came to speak? I
usually think about what they said." She sighed before gesturing
out to the landscape before them, putting on a half smile as she
asked, "So who is winning that war in your head?"

       ---------------------------------------------------------
Continuing to gaze at her after he asked his question, Bastion
listened quietly to what she said about examining things in
detail. He didn't really understand what she meant by that, or
what wondering how things came to be entailed, but he guessed if
that's what worked for her, then good for her. His ears perked
again when she talked about the Military Ceremony she told him a
long time ago had inspired her to be in the military in the
first place. The ceremony he'd been jealous that he hadn't been
able to see. Attending something like that would've been so
       amazing..
He looked back down to the countryside when Blossom asked about
the war in his head, his gaze flicking between two sides of the
scenery for a moment before sighing. "The gryphons are, right
now. We might have the advantage of numbers, but that's not
really helpful when only a third of those numbers are able to
fly, whereas their entire side is capable of flight. So
currently, our army is retreating, to try and draw them into the
mountains where their flight wouldn't be as helpful. While
normally that might be treacherous because the gryphons could
begin using the landscape against us, that's where a second
third of our army would come into play. The unicorns would be
able to take care of any stray boulder the gryphons tried
raining down on us, and even use it against them. The earth
ponies would be devoted almost entirely to fighting with ranged
weapons, and anypony without access to one would be devoted to
support duty in whatever capacity needed. So right now, the
gryphons are winning, but our military's hoping to change that
soon." He said with a shrug, before falling silent, the previous
look of concentration coming back as he focused on the scene
       before him.

By: Blossom Gale Date: January 29, 2014, 7:01 pm
       ---------------------------------------------------------
Blossom listened intently as Bastion tried to explain to her the
scenario that was going on in his head. Griffons, what a nasty
bunch to get into a fight with. As he had said, their main
advantages were the ability to fly, as well as being pretty
strong and large. Ponies' only way to combat that were the
pegasi, though there were many more griffons in the air than
them, and the ranged weapons of the forces left on the ground,
and it would be pretty difficult to hit something flying very
fast while retreating at the same time. After he pointed out his
supposed plan, Blossom thought carefully before saying, "You
have the right idea with having us retreat, but..." she raised a
hoof pointing to the mountain range he referred to, "why work to
level the playing field..." she dragged her hoof across the sky
to the base of the mountain, and the thick forest at the base of
it, "when you can make their advantage a disadvantage?"
"Flying in the thick of the forest at high speeds is
treacherous, which would ground our pegasi, but it would do the
same to the griffons, since they would not be able to spot us
through the thick of the canopy. We would have the opportunity
to set up ambushes, and any griffon dull enough to take flight
is slowed enough to become an easy pin cushion for the archers."
She nudged him with her elbow, and said wistfully, "It's how I
would do it, anyway..." For the next few hours, they discussed
the matter, with the two of them eventually falling silent as
they looked over the landscape. In a bid to get comfortable and
feel more secure, Blossom started leaning into Bastion's side,
finding some comfort against him as he pulled her a little
       closer to compensate.
A few hours passed, and the sun, having reached the apex of its
ascent long ago, was now lowering itself down the horizon.
Speaking up quietly, Blossom asked, "So what time is this play
supposed to be? Should we get going?"
       #Post#: 936--------------------------------------------------
       Re: Play by Play
By: Bastion Date: January 30, 2014, 9:47 am
       ---------------------------------------------------------
Bastion's ears perked again when Blossom spoke up, his gaze
breaking free from the view below to follow her hoof as it
moved. Her suggestion of using the forest for cover made sense,
and it was something he'd considered before deciding on the
mountains... And that would have worked, were the two armies
fighting on some kind of honor system. But all was fair in war.
There was a major problem with their army going into the forest.
"Well, the thing is, Blossom," Bastion said, gaze still locked
onto the forest below. "Trees can catch fire. If we retreated
into the forest, the gryphons would then start setting the
forest on fire, possibly all along the edge of the forest so it
would trap most of us inside."
This rebuttal against her tactic was then followed up by another
rebuttal of her own, and they debated back and forth like this
for some time, Bastion quite easily enjoying himself and having
somepony else to discuss this kind of thing with. It helped to
pass the time, and before he knew it, Blossom was speaking again
and the sun was much lower in the sky than it had been before.
He hadn't even realized that she'd been leaning against him.
"Well... Looks like it's maybe... Five, five thirty? We should
probably get to the theater," he told her as he removed his hoof
from her shoulder, admittedly quite a bit reluctant in doing so.
After pushing himself up, he lead her back down the stairs and
onto ground level, before moving through the streets. "Thanks
for debating with me like that, Blossom. I really enjoyed that.
I don't often get chances to toss tactics around like that with
other ponies. It was interesting to see what my best friend had
to say about all of that," he grinned to her, watching her for a
moment before looking forward again. "Relaxing, too. I might
have been able to fall asleep up there like that."
