Play by Play
By: Blossom Gale Date: January 26, 2014, 2:28 am
---------------------------------------------------------
Stand at arms. Stand at arms. Stand at arms. For your princess,
stand at arms...
These were the orders that methodically repeated themselves
through Blossom Gale's head as she stood on the left side of the
door to the Royal Chambers, her guisarme adorned with a banner
and held beside her at attention. Her light purple eyes were
kept forward the entire time, as they have been for the past
eight hours. Of all the things, she desperately wanted to be out
of this armour and in a cold shower for a long while; it was a
really warm day out today, and it took all of her self control
to not break her statue-like resolve and wipe at the moisture on
her brow. Where were those replacement guards? They should be
here on time...
There they were, coming down the hallway, two other familiar,
large ponies clad in gold armour and wielding their own weapons.
When they arrived, the one to take Blossom's place said,
"Afternoon watch, ready to relieve you from duty." Blossom
nodded at the two, and relaxed her stance before looking over to
Bastion, following him over to the side of the hallway so that
the new guards can assume their places. Under her breath she
muttered to her shield-bearing counterpart, "I swear, those two
are always late..." an annoyed sigh escaped her as she hefted
her guisarme into a position that she could easily walk with it
before asking, "Any plans for the rest of the day, or are you
also going to find the nearest cold shower and food?"

Unlike Blossom, Bastion was hardly impatient as he just stared
forward from his spot on the right side of the doorway that lead
to the Royal Chambers. In his mind, he was living a personal
fantasy of some epic battle that played out in his head, giving
various ponies names, families, friendships... His eyes snapped
back into focus when movement down the hallway caught his eye,
causing his already mostly straight posture to stiffen even
more. A bit of a relieved grin played on his face when he
noticed it was the two ponies to replace them for the day.
When they had all traded spots, he followed Blossom a little
down the way before chuckling at her. "Well, not everypony can
be Aurora Noctem material," he quipped as he turned and gestured
for her to follow with a slight toss of his head. "I think for
now I'm gonna grab a shower, cool off and relax a bit... Maybe
take a walk around Canterlot and do some thinking. you're free
to come with if you want, as usual. Oh, there's also this play
that I was thinking about going to see later this evening..." he
drew out, glancing over to her. "Maybe we can go see that for a
date," he told her facetiously, still watching her.

Blossom let out a little laugh at Bastion's reply, "Heh, of
course not. And they have the absolute models of perfect
guardponies to look up to." She stood up a little straighter as
she said that, her chest puffing out a little in pride. It was
no over-exaggeration on Bastion's part, the two of them did
graduate within the top five of their Basic Training unit of one
hundred ponies, and together they became a team with a name that
the other recruits could only mutter in hushed whispers of awe
and fear. Aurora Noctem. Yes, the two of them were near
unstoppable in the arenas that they were put through, and in any
skirmish, they would find each other and watch each other's back
as they fended off all comers. They don't offer such important
position's like the Royal Guard's to ponies that slack off on
the sides.
She walked along beside Bastion--well, more of a synchronized
march, really. The two of them were still technically on duty as
long as they wore the armour and carried their weapons, so they
were still required to keep some form of the tandem movement
that was beaten into them in Basic. Rolling her eyes at
Bastion's facetious comment, she replied, "So the Barracks it is
then. I don't have much else to do myself, so I'll join you on
your walk... and sure," she began with an attempt at both
sarcasm and facetiousness in her own tone as she glanced at him
out of the corner of her eye, "we can go see a play as a 'date'.
I never figured that you would enjoy that kind of thing. What
kind of play is it?"

Bastion grinned triumphantly when Blossom agreed to going to the
play with him on a 'date'. "Welp, score one for Bastille," he
told her before turning a corner. "Never thought I'd be into
that kind of thing either, but apparently the play's about a
knight that was forced away from home for a few years, and when
he comes back there's lots that's changed, and he takes it upon
himself to try and right all the wrongs. Sounds like it's got a
lot of opportunity to be good, so I thought why not? And thanks
for coming with me, it'll be good to have somepony to talk about
it with after the play's done," he told her seriously as he
watched her out of the corner of his eye. "You seem like you'd
be pretty savvy on that kind of thing, though. You watch a lot
of plays back in Prance?"

Blossom listened as Bastion outlined the play for her,
remembering back to a few that she went to see with different
members of her family before answering, "A knight righting
wrongs in his home, hmm? Sounds like an interesting premise,
though I wouldn't call myself 'savvy' per se. I've seen a few
with both of my parents; my mother favoured the ones focusing on
the romance of gentry, and my father favoured ones of chivalry
and gentilesse, like this one you're going to see." As they left
turned and started to leave the front door, she added, "My
personal favourite, however, was a tale of two knights, captured
as prisoners together, and both of them falling in love with the
same maiden. After they are freed, they are contested with each
other to see who wins her hoof. I shan't spoil the end for you
should the thought of seeing it cross your mind, but it was très
bien. Have you seen others like this before, or is this new to
you?"

Bastion watched and listened with intrigue as Blossom began to
detail one of her favorite plays, active mind trying to piece
together the play from how she described it. Sounded like it
could be interesting, but... then again, it also sounded like
it'd be incredibly sappy. "Nope, this'll be my first play. I
don't really have anything formal to go see it in, and my guard
armor would be overdoing it a little bit, so just as long as you
don't mind being seen at something like that next to me, I think
we'll be fine."
Bastion turned another corner soon after, close now to the
barracks. "Doubt I'm gonna see that play you mentioned, unless
you went with me... So I'd like to hear how it ends if you
wouldn't mind. Also, is that how you want it to go down, Salmon?
Two stallions contesting over who wins your hoof?"

"I'm sure I can tolerate sitting next to you for a few hours,
Bastille. I stand next to you eight hours a day and follow you
for more, so I must be immune to your cultural insensitivity."
She shrugged before adding, "In all honesty, I did not pack much
dress clothing either when I came here from Prance, so I'm
afraid I will have to share in your misery." A little half smirk
could be seen after her humorously cynical remark. "As for the
play, it ends with the ruler calling a tournament between the
two knights, each leading a small army of fifty in a fight to
the death. Both knights and the lady pray to different deities
to influence events; the deities of war, love, and fertility.
One knight prays for victory, the other prays for love, and the
lady prays for the best stallion to have her. In the end, all
three of them get what they ask for, in a twist of ironic fate."
"As for the contest," she began, more or less immune to his
little name for her after being around him so long, "Neigh,
there would be no contest. I would choose who I would to have
me, not by some silly contest. How would you like to have your
livelihood decided in a contest between two ponies you know
nothing of?"

Bastion's ears perked a bit when Blossom talked about the play's
ending, his brows raising a little bit when he realized it was
nothing like he'd expected it to be. Small armies? Praying to
deities for assistance? All three of them getting what they
asked for? Well, he wasn't quite able to figure out what it was
they got, so maybe he could still go and see the play with her
some time. Assuming this kind of thing turned out to be
something he enjoyed. For all he knew he'd probably just wind up
falling asleep halfway through it.
"Well... I dunno," Bastion said after she asked if he wanted a
contest to decide his livelihood. "I guess it depends on how
good looking the two mares are," he said with a deadpan delivery
as he glanced over to her before opening the door to the
barracks for her now that they'd reached it. "In all
seriousness, I really don't know. I guess if they're two ponies
I don't know, then I'd agree that it's probably not what I'd
want. Unless I was a stallion who didn't have a chance finding
love otherwise, then who knows? Either way, I'll remember not to
get into a contest with some other stallion to try and win your
favor. Unless I had to, then I guess you'd just have to deal
with it," he smirked at her, walking with her towards their bunk
so they could remove their armor.

Blossom stepped into the barracks, a little annoyed that he had
distracted her long enough to be able to hold the door open for
her, before rolling her eyes at his somewhat expected vain
answer. At least he was then able to save his answer by
elaborating that the outcome of said match was probably not what
he would want, so he could still at least see the point that she
was trying to get across with her question. As they walked to
their bunk, and Bastion outlined a hypothetical scenario where
he would prefer it didn't come to a fight, and if it did, then
he would participate. Shrugging to herself as she thought of it
herself, she walked around to his side and began helping him out
of his heavy plate armour, hooves running over the different
interlocking pieces of metal and lifting them off.
"If it were to come to such a hypothetical decision where you
were forced to fight for my hoof, in all honesty, I would prefer
if you won," she paused to let out a little grunt as she
undressed a particularly difficult piece from him, "at least you
know me better than any other stallion, and I doubt I could be
partnered with somepony who is as good or better than you with a
shield." As she picked off the last bit, she turned so that he
could do the same for her before adding, "So there you go, win
for me, and maybe some enterprising playwright will produce a
play on its premise. I imagine it would be a great success."

Bastion stood still for Blossom as she began to work at the
various straps and buckles that held his armor to his body, ears
perked a little bit as she responded to his hypothetical
scenario. Sure, he could have used his magic to get the armor
off himself, but it was just so much easier for somepony who
could actually see what they were doing. So he let her remove
piece by piece from his body and used his magic to levitate the
armor neatly into one of the trunks at the end of their bunk,
knowing he'd have to do the same in a moment.
"Sure, because we've had such excitement so far. The thrilling
tale of three ponies who guarded doors for a living. Two of the
guards try to have a contest of who can do the best job of
guarding a door to win the third pony's favor." As he spoke, he
began to remove Blossom's armor for her as she did for him, his
words mostly accompanied by a self-mocking expression.
"Regardless, I doubt I'll be getting into any situations like
that any time soon. So we don't really have to worry about
anything like that." When all of her armor was removed Bastion
stepped back a little bit and tossed his head towards the
showers. "Well, let's go grab a shower. You smell like somepony
drenched you with sweat-scented 'eau de toilette'," he joked
with a playful jab to her side, putting extra emphasis on the
'toilette' part. "When's the last time you saw a play, anyway?"
