Just One More Slice
By: Thunderclap Date: January 19, 2014, 9:45 am
---------------------------------------------------------
He never did really enjoy the feeling of floating in the air in
a unicorns magic with his hooves dangling uselessly a few inches
above the ground. He'd given permission for the unicorn to carry
him, sure, but that didn't make it any more enjoyable as they
passed other pokies in the street, a few younger colts and
fillies pointing and giggling at him as they went, most likely
out of some kind of thought towards how he was weak and couldn't
take care of himself, or maybe that he put way to much care Ingo
his hooves and was fresh from a hooficure and was now trying to
avoid scuffing them. It could have also been because they found
his temp suit of armor a joke, something that would have never
flown had they caught even a glimpse at his old battle scarred
suit of honor... Or maybe it was just because he had been upside
down for most of the way here. Whatever the reason, it did
little to help him as he tried to keep himself balled up as best
as he was able in some vain attempt to soften the waves of pain
washing over his innards.
"Mana..." He said weakly with an equally pathetic wave of his
hoof at the unicorn in question, Thunder now rather certain that
he was about to die, "... remember me as I lived... not how I
left this world... femme er me as the hero I was..."
"Please," Mana replied with a roll of his eyes, desperately
hoping the Pegasus wasn't actually being serious with this, "you
single hoofedly ate one of those big disgusting pizzas of yours,
and you did so in under five minutes. You just have indigestion.
I'm surprised that stuff isn't burning a hole through your
stomach right now, honestly. Maybe this will teach you to stop
eating that stuff and next time you'll just have a salad or
something."
"It's difficult to hear you over this pain... But somepony
clearly poisoned my food... I've downed those pizzas in less
time in the past, it couldn't be that delicacy thats doing this
to me." Thunder claimed, now convinced that somepony wanted him
"out of the picture"."Avenge me, Mana... Avenge me..." Sighing
with an un-amused expression, Mana, continuing in his efforts to
find some way of silencing the other stallions whining, once
again scanned the passing shops for any signs of possible help.
Furniture shop... Place for jewelry... A book store... Oh, he
recognized that store actually. Was that where he picked up that
tome on dimension traversing magics and theories? Maybe if he
took a quick glance through the front windows he'd remember for
sure. If so, he'd probably want to take a small detour inside to
see if they still had that book on the works of Ka-
Another groan from Thunder brought Mana back to the task at
hoof, hin frowning a little at how much the other stallion was
continuing to whine. Still, sounded like it was getting pretty
bad for him. Maybe this really would get him to stop dragging
them both to that same parlor every few days. The unicorn swore
that the smell of burnt dough and cheese seemed to just cling to
his coat after every visit. Another glance down the street
and... oh, here was something. Place called 'The Alembic'. A few
steps closer to get a better view through the front windows
confirmed the easy to guess specialty of the shop. Alchemical
potions. Perfect.
"Try to survive for just a few more minutes there, Thunder," he
told his partner as he went for the front door of the shop, the
floating stallion now seeming to be trying to roll around in the
air for some reason Mana couldn't understand, "found a place
with medicine. We'll even try and find something cherry flavored
just for you." Mana took on a, annoyingly common for Thunder,
tone of voice that made it sound as though he was addressing a
child as he stepped inside the shop.

Thyme rolls around the corner of the street just in time to see
the two guards disappear inside her shop, and she frowns. She'd
gone out for just a few minutes to get something to eat, and
must have forgotten to lock the door when she was leaving.
They'd looked like they were wearing the armor of the royal
guard, so she doubts they're thieves. Still, she'd rather not
leave them alone in her shop, whether they're there on some kind
of guard business or just as potential customers. She speeds up,
and soon reaches the door, and as she goes inside, gets a better
look at the two. Why is that one upside down...? "Excuse me, I'm
sorry." She says as she rolls inside and around them, going over
to the counter and setting down the bag that contains her lunch.
"I was out for a few minutes. Can I help you?" She asks, eyeing
the one hanging in the air, who seems to be in pain, if the
foal-like whining is anything to go by.

Entering the currently unoccupied shop, Mana raised a brow,
wondering where the owner was as well as why they had left their
shop unattended. First he assumed it was simple forgetfulness
and that whoever owned the place had stepped out for a minute.
Still, as a guard, he couldn't help but at least have the idea
of something being up play about in his mind for a moment.
"There's nopony here, Mana..." Thunder said with another groan
of discomfort, him glancing around the shop with an upside down
perspective and through eyes squinted from his constant
grimacing and wincing, "... clearly they didn't want to be
around a guard who was about to die... paranoid and stuff, you
know. Also, since the owner isn't here, you're trespassing...
And breaking and entering... because. I hereby place you under
arrest! Surrender your armor and come peacefully and I will, as
a friend, try to pull some strings to lighten your- ugh....
Your..." Trailing off, forgetting what he'd been talking about,
curling up into more of a floating ball, and giving Mana sad
puppy dog eyes in a silent plea for help, Thunder stopped
talking, something Mana approved of as he gave the Pegasus a
flat look then looked back towards the entrance where a wheel
chair bound mare was entering.
Yup, he'd been right with his initial assumptions. The owner had
gone out to lunch. Mana, being as strict as he usually was with
his job, considered a brief moment of good ol lecturing for the
mare on proper and basic security habits complete with questions
on how she usually handled leaving her shop, but Thunder's
whimpering was too distracting for him to get into lecture mode
right now.
"Ma'am," he greeted with a nod, watching as she wheeled herself
around the counter before moving on to why they'd visited, "as
you might be able to guess just from looking at him, my friend
here is a bit distressed. He's suffering from a pretty bad bout
of indigestion." Thunder, feeling he needed to apparently add
something to this, turned his puppy dog eyes to the alchemists,
them now accompanied with a slightly trembly lower lip as he
almost tried to look pathetic. "You wouldn't happen to have
anything strong and fast acting on hoof, would you?" Mana
finished, looking to be ignoring the Pegasus and his moaning for
now.

Thyme nods back to Mana, the unicorn obviously being the one to
talk to. "I should have something for that." She says, seemingly
immune to Thunder's puppy dog eyes. She does wonder why a
presumably highly trained guard would be acting like a sick foal
though. Seems a bit... unprofessional, and quite unlikely to
make a good impression of the guards. The green mare mentally
shrugs. Didn't matter to her at least, as long as they could
still do their jobs. She rolls back out from around the counter
and heads off along a shelf, looking over the labels on a few
bottles as she goes. Eventually, she settles on a reddish-orange
potion, and pulls it from the shelf with her magic. "This should
do it." She says, levitating the bottle over to Mana and
returning to the counter. "That'll be 20 bits please."

Mana nodded at the mare as she made her way around the counter
to find something for his partner, the unicorn then lowering the
Pegasus held in his magic down to only an inch and a half or so
above the ground where he then released his magical hold and let
the other stallion drop onto the ground with a small jolt for
his behavior, the light impact on the ground causing a slight
tremble in the potions nearest them. Thunder, now laying flat on
his back, rolled onto his right side, then over onto his left
with a groan if pain, then back to his right where he made
useless kicky motions with his legs before rolling back onto his
left and curling up into another ball as Mana, rubbing his
forehead as he dealt with a slight tinge of a headache brought
on by having to have kept his magic active for so long, gave him
a stern and un-amused look.
"Stop it." Was all he said, or rather commanded of the other
stallion. His orders were, of course, taken, carefully reviewed,
then tossed out a window along with the furniture of whatever
metaphorical room Thunder had received them in, the Pegasus
deciding to do the exact opposite of what he'd been told by
rolling back and forth on his sides more quickly now, the pain
he suffered getting worse from the act but being ignored for the
sake of annoying the unicorn.
Being pushed now, and knowing he was being pushed, Mana felt his
teeth clench slightly in irritation, him trying to distract
himself by glancing back towards the mare who, thank Celestia,
was returning with a remedy for his headac-er, Thunders
indigestion. "Thank you," he said, every genuinely, before
casting another un-amused look towards his friend that he wanted
to somehow force to clean every suit of armor in the castle.
"Twenty bits, Thunder."
"Mana... you'll need to pick this one up for me... I have no
money..." Was the weak response from the temp armor wearing
guard.
"You paid for the pizza, Thunder."
"... And that was... Uh... from my... emergency... savings...?"
"So, a pizza is an emergency, but intense and constant pain that
prevents you from doing your job isn't?"
"... Yes."
"Thank you for your time, Ma'am," Mana said, levitating the
potion back to the mare, "but it seems he'll just have to ride
this out in his own-"
"Fine!" Thunder interrupted with a sharp gasp of pain, him
fishing a limp hoof into his pack and removing a pouch which he
then tried to throw at Mana's face without looking, it sailing
so wide that it may as well have not been aimed at Mana at all.
Catching the pouch in his magic, then opening and removing the
required number of bits which were then neatly stacked onto the
counter., Mana brought the potion back to his side, him then
floating it down to Thunder who quickly snatched it up and
guzzled it down as if his very life depended on it. The pegasus
then letting the empty bottle roll away on the floor as he once
again used his legs and hooves to try and hold his belly as he
waited for the potions affects to kick in.
Mana, now flat put ignoring the other stallion since his ailment
should be taken care of, began to glance around the shop himself
for anything of interest, the unicorn testing out his own
alchemical knowledge by trying to identify the various names and
ingredients used in the shop. Spotting a smaller vial of
swirling blue, the unicorn picked it up from its shelf using his
magic then brought it over to the counter and set it down, the
guard hoping he was right with his assumption for what the
potion was good for. "This works for minor aches and pains,
right?" He asked the owner for confirmation before gesturing
vaguely at his partner on the ground. "I apologize for how he's
been acting by the way. Also, you wouldn't happen to have any
books on alchemy here, would you? Specifically on the works of
Pestle? If not, would you happen to have an idea on where I can
find them? I've been looking around for a while now with no luck
and woukd greatly appreciate it if you had any help you could
offer."

Thyme watches Thunder roll back and forth for a few moments. The
mare gives Mana a sympathetic look as he rubs his head. If the
pegasus acts like this all the time, it's no wonder he has a
headache. Ignoring Thunder's whining, she takes the bits Mana
had set down and puts them in the register. She watches the
unicorn as he looks around and eventually levitates a vial over
to the counter, nodding to him at his question. "Yes, that will
help with minor aches." She says, then gestures to a shelf over
by the front window. "There are books there. I think I have a
few of Pestle's."

Mana allowed a very small smirk of pride to shade his features
at the confirmation of how he'd properly identified the type of
potion he held in his magic from its coloring alone, but quickly
squashed the silly feeling when he reminded himself that he'd
identified a simple pain reliever, the most common of medicines
for ponies to go looking for.
Checking the label on the vial, Mana read off the price for the
potion to be only ten bits. For a moment he considered taking
the money put of Thunders bit pouch, a small jab at the Pegasus
over the rather sizeable amount of bits that he owed Mana, a
number that only seemed to grow as the days rolled by, but
still, as strict as ever, Mana told himself that would be
stealing. He then almost rolled his eyes at himself as he
levitated the pouch back to its owner, Thunder currently petting
his own tail as he waited for the potion he'd taken to cure him,
before pulling his own out from his pack, the guard counting out
the needed number of bits and paying for his medicine before
opening the vial and downing its contents.
Following her hoof as the alchemist pointed out where he could
find the books he was looking for, Mana smiled almost excitedly
and trotted over to the shelves holding them, the unicorn
reading off the titles and having his horn remain aglow as
several left their places and began floating around him. "Okay,
let's see..." He said, the books being opened and taking turns
in front of his nose as his eyes scanned spines and pages alike,
"Wine... Moonglow... Alabaster... Ah! Here we go! Pestle!
Finally!"
As Mana played with his books, Thunder, now recovered enough to
not be whimpering like a foal, straightened himself back up,
retaking a steady stance on his hooves before giving the mare
behind the counter a nod. "I thank you, ma'am," he said, now
sounding more guard like, "and I'm sure the rest of the corps
does as well. To show my gratitude," he sat down, then held his
front legs out, "I would like to offer hugs and or squeezums."
"You've got a book on Bracken's experiments too? I haven't seen
so much as a page by him in months!"

Thyme takes the bits Mana had given her, giving the stallion a
nod before he walks away to examine the bookshelf at the other
end of the shop. She turns her attention to Thunder, still
curled up on the floor. She wonders what he'd done to get
indigestion so bad, if he was as incapable of moving as he
seems. Well, he had the potion now, which should be kicking in
and solving that problem any moment now. She can't help but feel
a little proud when it takes effect, immediately providing the
pegasus with relief. She gives him a nod too at his thanks,
though his offer of "gratitude" makes her frown slightly. "No."
She says with a shake of her head, and rather hopes Thunder
doesn't decide to press the issue. "It's a bit of a lesser known
one, a lot less popular than his other books. It's good for
anypony who wants to try something more unusual though." She
says, looking toward Mana and raising her voice a little in
order to be heard across the shop.

Thunder ears droop along with the edges of his mouth as he
frowned at the mares refusal of his wonderful squeezy embrace,
the stallions shoeless hooves dropping back to the floor with a
clop where one began to trace small circles that he stared at.
"... I'm feeling better..." He mumbles, thinking maybe shed been
worried about being too close to him, "... Wasn't gonna throw up
on you or anything..."
Mana, trotting back with a bounce in his step and small stack of
books blocking the view of his face, seemed oblivious to his
partner's dejected demeanor as he passed him and carefully set
down the reading material before the mare, his face wearing a
happy grin which was now visible. "Unusual is good!" He replied,
pouch ready for him to pay for the books he'd chosen. "I've got
a few of his other more common works already, and I've almost
memorized them all. Something fresh and not of the norm sounds
deliciously new." Thunder, giving the stack of books a much less
enthusiastic look, idly attempted to drag one of them across the
counter towards him with a hoof, the unicorn he was pulling it
away from slapping his hoof with on of his own without even
turning his eyes, the pegasus rolling his eyes then wandering
off to check out the potions stocking the shelves.
"Do you often carry these more obscure works? And would you
happen to have anything new coming in the near futu-"
"What's this red one?" Thunder cut him off with a question he
was certain was far more important simply because he was asking
it, the pegasus balancing a larger bottle of a bright red liquid
on the tip of his hoof. "This make you turn giant or something?
Oh! Do you have any potions that can cause somepony to grown a
temporary unicorn horn? Not with the magic of course, just the
horn?"

Thyme gives a slight sigh as Thunder deflates, seemingly quite
disappointed he hadn't gotten to hug her. "I don't like
touching." She explains, before turning to face Mana. "I like to
keep track of the lesser known books. Some of them are even
better than the more popular ones." She leans forward a little,
examining the pile of books the guard had chosen. "As for new
ones, there-" She's interrupted by Thunder's question, and gives
him and annoyed look. "That's a magic dye. It will turn anything
it gets on that color for two weeks. And no. I don't carry many
transformative potions."
