Time at the Tavern
By: Darrus Date: January 18, 2014, 11:10 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
With his mind now set on overhearing some information and maybe
getting a cheap drink, though his funds and previous encounter
with the mare who'd led him here made the latter seem...
unlikely... Darrus stepped up to the front doors of the tavern,
him taking note of its name, The Guiding Light, and burning its
location into his mind so as to always remember where it was. Or
try to at least.
Entering with style, in his own imagination at least, Darrus
flourished his way through the doors, walking tall as if owning
the place and strutting over to, of course, the bar first where
he took up one of the stools then spun around so as to lean back
against the counter and gaze out over the other patrons, ears
now listening for anything interesting about anything as he
waited for something. What? Who could ever know....?

the jangling of the bell above the door brings Lamplight's
attention away from the tray of food she'd been serving for a
moment, the mare glancing over her shoulder to make note of
where the new arrival was heading. Just one, going to the bar.
Which meant he was probably here for drink rather than food. And
if his cocky attitude was any indication, he was probably here
for the mares too. She turns back to the table in front of her
and finishes serving the three ponies seated at it before
turning and heading into the kitchen to put the tray away. A few
moments later and she's behind the bar, giving a couple knocks
with her hoof on the wooden surface to get the rust-colored
pegasus' attention. "Hi there." She greets with a smile.
"Looking for anything in particular?"

"Why yes, actually," Darrus replied, spinning back around to
face the bartender and laying out three bits he'd, at some point
within these last few seconds, removed from his bit pouch in his
saddle bag, "I'm looking for a few things, in fact. First, I'd
like whatever this will get me around here," a nod at the tiny
pile of bits on the counter, the stallion wearing a toothy smile
as if he was already trying to think of some way to convince the
mare to let him buy a drink at a discount, "and second, I was
just hoping to learn a bit more information about this here town
you've all got. Was pointed this way for listening in on local
gossip, and figured I'd ask around for details regarding anypony
looking for help with anything."

Lamplight looks at the trio of bits Darrus puts down on the
counter. Sure, that'd get him something. Admittedly just plain
old ale, but it was something. She scoops up the bits and
deposits them in the register, then turns to pull up a mug for
the stallion. "Help... hm..." She says, more to herself than
anything as she puts the drink down before him. "I think Mr.
Waddle was looking for somepony to help re-do his roof. And...
let's see... Rose was wanting an assistant at the flowershop. I
think there was an opening at the bowling alley too." Lamplight
shrugs at Darrus. "Other than that you could check the board at
Town Hall, or maybe see if Sweet Apple Acres needs any help."

Taking up the mug with a small smile, the stallion happy he
didn't need to go about trying to convince the mare for a favor
when it came to getting a drink around here, Darrus took a
hearty gulp of his ale, the plain beverage being the kind he was
used to having as his price range was often small. As for the
work mentioned... hm... Redoing a roof didn't sound too bad,
though his wings weren't at one hundred percent st the moment,
the idea of using them to fly on and off of the top of a
building all day not sounding like the best way to let them rest
and shake of their aches. Still, he'd do it if he had no other
choice. An assistant at the flowershop didn't sound very
strenuous, and it could possibly come with an added bonus of
having some sweet flowers in hoof for lunch breaks every day.
Darrus wasn't sure if he fit the bill when it came to proper
appearances for a flower shop though... a bit too scruffy maybe,
he admitted internally with a small shrug at himself. Bowling
alley sounded like it would make his naps-er... "semi-frequent
breaks" difficult with all the noise... but not impossible
should one try to na-... "semi-frequent break" hard enough...
At the mention of a board at Town Hall, Darrus raised a brow
from over the rim of his mug as he took another gulp. He wasn't
sure if he was simply remembering wrong or if the other mare had
been mistaken, but he could have sworn he'd been told that the
town lacked a job board... Apparently not though, it seemed...
As for this farm that was once again mentioned as a good place
to look, Darrus figured he'd give the place a quick fly by later
and see what happened.
"And what about around here?" He asked with a smile, deciding to
try and learn of all possible openings everywhere, "You wouldn't
happen to beooking for some help yourself, would you? I think
you would find I serve as a fantastic taste tester for all new
drinks and recipes." The Pegasus joked before taking another
drink.

Lamplight tilts her head to the side slightly, eyeing Darrus
closely. Does she need help? She was able to handle serving both
food and drink herself, usually, as she doesn't often have a ton
of customers. Maybe she could use some help though? It would be
nice not to have to run around so much on the busier nights...
"I suppose I could use a server, so I don't have to do it all
myself." She says, rolling her eyes at his suggestion that he
could try out the drink and food for her.

A server, hm? ... Has Darrus worked as a server before? He
paused to think about this, running through the long long long
list of temporarily held jobs he'd had in the past. Well... He
guessed he'd technically been a server for a short time back in
Baltimare... though he was encouraged to never speak of those
times. He still didn't understand how that boat managed to get
to the seventh floor like that...
"Eh... You sure you don't want to just hire me to sit around and
attract mares and more business?" He replied with a joking
smile, finishing his drink with another pair of large gulps
before setting his mug down and wiping his mouth with a front
leg. "Or perhaps you could hire me to juggle bottles for
entertainment, then pay me extra to sweep up the broken glass?"

Lamplight rolls her eyes again at Darrus' next suggestion,
though this time she gives a short laugh. "If I needed somepony
for that I'd just get Soybean to come out here and pose, and
then they'd be lining up down the block to get in." She jokes,
laughing again. "Of course then there'd be nopony to cook the
food..." She puts on a mock serious face, making a show of
examining Darrus closely. "Juggle huh? You don't look much like
a clown..."

"Ha. Well, you must just be trying your best to keep him hidden
in the back then to make sure this place doesn't get too crowded
to operate." Darrus said, glancing towards the door leading to
the kitchen and wondering who this new rival of his was. At the
mention of not looking like a clown, Darrus pretended to be
slightly offended and took on a more prideful, but clearly fake,
posture. "Don't I though? I admit that I may have left my big
shoes and squeaky nose in my other cloak, but can't you just see
me twisting up balloon animals and throwing pies?"

Lamplight laughs, glancing back at the kitchen door. She looks
back at Darrus, and gives a little, almost contemplative hum.
"Maybe it'd be better if you had some facepaint. I'm sure you'd
look nice and proper then. Of course the squeaky nose and big
shoes would help." She leans to the side a little, allowing
herself a better view of the rest of the room to make sure
nopony needed anything. Everything was still in order though, so
she looks back to the scruffy pegasus. "Well mister, I don't
really need a juggler, but if I ever do and you're still in town
I know who to look for.
