Re: After Hours

Ruby's words about Nevermore only caused Insidious to smile, and
chuckle a little, the dark eyed stallion responding with a tone
that suggested he understood her lack of faith, but thought it
was misplaced.
"I trust Nevermore to find anything that might be lurking out
there, he's no simple bird, that's for sure." Insidious
commented, his tone also implying there was more to his dark pet
than met the eye, although without letting on exactly what that
entailed.
Penumbra almost didn't catch her next question, given both how
quiet and hoarse her voice had been, and how he had been
interestedly watching her study the old book she held in her
hooves, but as he heard her request for his name, he frowned a
little, brow furrowing.
"I won't tell you my name, because names hold great power, and
telling someone your name grants them an aspect of control over
you, which is something you should avoid at all costs in my line
of work.. Just kidding, I just don't go throwing my name around
because, well.. It's kinda stupid, and not great for first
impressions. Goes well on a business card for paranormal
investigations, but it's not something you'd want to introduce
yourself with, most all of the time." Insidious replied, after a
moments silence, his voice at first serious and cold, before it
shifted to a more genuine and friendly tone, accompanied by a
small chuckle.

"You know what else does not bode well for first impressions?"
Ruby retorted snappily, still very quiet as she stopped
shuffling briefly, "Not giving others some sort of name to call
you. That, to my understanding, is rude. You could have given me
a different name. I could have called you Mr. Bones and have
been oblivious to your true name or any potential wild rides you
have partaken in, but since you still refuse to give me a name,
and I tire of calling you by the un-tastefully ambiguous 'hey
you' or 'weirdo', then I will continue from this point on
referring to you by your new name, the shyster scholar who
swyved the wife of the carpenter before receiving a lash from a
red-hot branding iron across his flank in the farcical tale of
the Miller. 'Nickels' is your new name, say hello to Nickels,
Pharasma."
The python, of course, did not acknowledge the newly named pony,
and instead continued to hug against the heat source that was
Ruby's leg. Ruby however, in some sort of exhausted
pseudo-delirium thanks to her rant, simply continued to shuffle
the cards, closing the book she had open after figuring that it
would be of no help to her, asked the stranger, "Well, I do have
a question for you, Nickels, what do you think of the art of
divination? How does the 'paranormal investigations pony' view
the practice of interpreting the appearance of a select
combination of seventy-eight cards into a likely future? And
when will your not-simple bird be back?"

Insidious at first looked taken aback by Ruby's biting retort,
his eyebrows raising in unison as she linked him to the The
Miller's Tale, and one of the two Scholars therein, before a
small smile overtook his face as her rant concluded, the green
stallion happy she had at least compared him to the more
successful of the pair, even despite the burns he had received
on his posterior.
"Hey, no reason to be rude, Miss. That's Mister Nickels."
Penumbra corrected, voice mock stern, some newfound respect of
this young mare's wit evident in his expression and tone, his
mildly upbeat mood proving hard to dampen, even in the face of
her dry, sardonic attitude, or his new name.
Replying "Shoot" in reference to her desire to ask him a
question, Penumbra sat back to listen intently to her query,
frowning in thought the moment it was established that she
wanted to know his attitude towards Divination.
"Honestly, I'm not entirely sure. I've known ponies that have
either sworn by it, or vehemently denied its effectiveness, but
to be truthful, I don't know enough about Divination to form a
proper opinion." He replied, after a moment of thought,
reinforcing his indifference towards the issue with a shrug of
his slim shoulders.
"I'd have suspected Nevermore to be back by now, didn't seem
that large of a town. Unless the fog is making it hard for him
to navigate, he'll probably be back within a few more minutes."
The green stallion added, as he relaxed back in his chair to
wait, now eying her deck of tarot cards with more interest,
curious to see if she had been going anywhere with that
question, or was purely curious of his own view.

Well, it had taken her longer than she's thought to find the
dressing (For some reason Soybean had seen fit to leave it in
the silverware drawer.) but finally, Lamplight was finished with
the salad for Ruby. While it wasn't exactly a small salad, she
hopes it's enough to help the younger mare, and at least tide
her over until breakfast. Or more probably, lunch, given how
late it was. Picking up the bowl in her magic, Lamplight emerges
from the kitchen and sets the snack down before Ruby, giving her
a smile. She has no idea what the pair might have been talking
about, only being able to hear muffled voices from where she'd
been working, so she remains silent for now.

Ruby lifts her head up from the bar counter as soon as the bowl
of salad is set in front of her, looking at it with bleary eyes
as her mind slowly registered that the thing in front of her was
in fact food and not a mirage, and was indeed edible and should
be eaten now. After Nickels had mentioned that the bird may be
back soon, Ruby figured now would be a perfect time to indulge
in her appetite. Picking up the fork that came with the bowl,
she stabbed at the lettuce greedily, piercing a few leaves of
the romaine lettuce through their crisp spines, their crunchy
cries sounding quietly through the dark as she lifted them up,
dangling paralyzed from the miniature trident that she wielded
without mercy, lifting them up to her mouth, where she quickly
placed them in between the crushing vice of her top and bottom
jaw, grinding her teeth into the fleshy little, leaves, no mercy
shown as she then swallowed the bite.
Already she felt her strength returning just from that one bite.
It was amazing what food could do for a mana starved unicorn,
like giving sugar to a diabetic. After that bite, she nodded to
Lamplight gratefully, exhaling in an exasperated manner, "Thank
you again, Lamplight, I didn't think I could ever call a salad
lifesaving in my entire life, but... lifesaving salad." After
that rather awkward statement, she continued to viciously attack
the salad, showing it no mercy as she stabbed more pieces of it
onto her fork, making sure to get the pieces that were covered
in the dressing and maybe some croutons as well, the smell of
the dressing sending her into a tame and mannered feeding
frenzy. In about two minutes, the salad was finished, a record
for her, but given the situation, she was in no position to
celebrate.
Looking a little more energetic than her previous self three
minutes ago, she lifted her head up and focused a little more on
the shuffling, commenting offhandedly to the stallion, "You know
Nickels, I doubt your bird is going to find something that makes
its home in these conditions regularly. For all we know, it is
long gone by now, and if its a magical being like I suspect it
to be, it is even farther gone than that. In the meantime..."
she turned herself around to face him a little more fully,
petting the head of the python in her lap as she looked at him
straight on, "perhaps there is something that you would like to
know about what could potentially be your future? Gain some sort
of insight into a particular area that is in need of
reassurance? I can offer you a glimpse of what fate has coming
for you, for a price of course. I feel that this will be the
last divination I will perform before the void of sleep beckons
to me."

Watching Ruby massacre the salad without any hint of remorse,
only all-consuming hunger, "Nickels" chuckled a little, shooting
Lamplight a momentary smile, before he returned to his thoughts,
rubbing his chin with a hoof, as he awaited the return of his
companion.
Once again, he turned a little at Ruby's statement, listening
interestedly, and thinking for a moment or two before he
replied, his faith in Nevermore still apparent in his response,
despite the time that had passed already while they waited for
him.
"You're probably not wrong, but I have faith in Nev, if there's
anything out there to be found, he'll find it." Insidious
commented proudly, before raising an eyebrow in interest as the
young mare swivelled in her seat to face him, prompting him to
turn a little more in her direction, curiosity etched on his
face.
Upon hearing her words, the green stallion considered her
proposal for a moment, before shrugging, and grinning a little,
speaking with a confident and curious tone. Although he knew the
dangers of curiosity well enough, and understood that what fate
had in store for him was likely a grisly end, Insidious figured
it was worth a look anyway, and would at least be a learning
experience on the efficacy of Divination, and his response said
as much.
"Alright, why not? I've yet to experience divination firsthoof,
so this should be educational, however it goes down." The green
stallion commented, chuckling faintly, as he withdrew a rather
hefty looking bit pouch from the pocket of his robes, and
deposited it on the counter beside him, the small shrug he gave
her after placing it making it clear that he didn't mind the
price she requested, so long as it wasn't outrageously lofty.

Ruby grinned as Nickels agreed to her offer, glancing quickly to
the hefty-looking bit purse that he brought out with him. Just
how many bits did he have in there? Probably more than Ruby
would ever see in a long time, but she could probably guess it
would be enough to buy her food for weeks on end. The empty
plate beside her was an empty reminder of the debt that she owed
though, and turned to look at Lamplight briefly before going
back to the plate. She still felt uneasy about leaving herself
in another pony's debt like that, so she had a pretty good idea
of how she was going to pay that off.
She looked back at Insidious, continuing to shuffle her cards as
she said, "My price is not so steep, I assure you, all I ask is
that you pay Lamplight for the salad that I had. It's where the
money would have gone anyways. Now..." she began as she motioned
for him to sit down, "do you have any sort of question you wish
to have some sort of insight into? Is there something that
troubles you about your future? Or do you simply wish to know
what will come of the future?"

Seeing Ruby give the first genuinely happy smile he'd seen since
they met, Insidious felt his own smile widen just a little,
nearing a small grin as she turned towards him and offered her
services for the small fee of paying for her salad.
Without hesitating, the green stallion dug out a small hoof-full
of bits, eying them for a moment before looking up at Ruby, her
smile still proving infectious to his own mood.
"Did you enjoy the salad enough for me to add a tip?" The green
stallion questioned, with an easy smile, as she named her price,
clearly willing to chip in a little extra, seeing that Ruby
seemed to have enjoyed her salad, and had deferred the debt him
rather than demand bits for her fortune-telling.
Turning a little more until they were facing one another in
response to the young mare's gesture, Insidious paused to think
for a moment, hoof raised to scratch his chin in thought as he
considered which aspect of his future he'd like to hear about
most.
"Hmm.. There any way you could break down potential categories
for me first, miss?" The green stallion asked, tone polite and
friendly, clearly enjoying the new dynamic of their
conversation, and the potential chance to see an aspect of his
future.

Lamplight watches as Ruby viciously devours the poor, helpless
salad. She was glad Ruby and the stallion, apparently named
"Nickels" were getting along better now, the red mare seemingly
less suspicious of the dark-coated unicorn now. She isn't
entirely sure what they're talking about with the stallion's
bird, but it seems he'd sent it off for some reason. When the
conversation turns to Ruby's fortunetelling, the orange
innkeeper thinks back on her own prediction, again wondering
what it could mean, and what was in store for her.

Ruby shrugged as Nickels posed his question to her, asking her
to set up a few categories of questions for which he can ask.
What was with ponies these days and not knowing what they
wanted, or what they had to do? Is it that hard to think about
something that they wanted to do in life, or something that they
were uncertain of? Of course she would need to give him the same
answer that she gave Lamplight earlier, which was a series of
basic rules to asking her questions, as she had to do with some
customers, but really, she personally thought that this sort of
thing should be obvious.
"Well, first things before second," she began, continuing to
shuffle her cards, "I cannot answer yes or no questions. If you
ask me a yes or no question, I will simply flip a bit for you
and call that your fortune since that will be the best you will
ever get in that case. Secondly after first, don't ask questions
that involve an incredibly specific answer, such as what you
should wear to the Grand Galloping Gala. I have no cards in this
deck, nor will there ever be any cards that list the words
'shoes', 'dress', or 'suit and tie'. If there were, then I would
have reason to be suspicious of you should the cards choose to
give you a dress." She gave him a deadpan look, seeming very
serious even after her little quip before going back to
shuffling, "... very concerned indeed..."
The python that was still in her lap flicked its tongue out to
taste the air, and her serious look broke to a slight and brief
smirk, "Other than that, there are no categories. I cannot tell
you what it is that you wish to know, because if I did, the
cards would read what I wish to know of you wishing that you
wished to know of something that you wished to know even though
you never knew in the first place, so asked me what you would
think you would like to know, and I respond with a thing that I
would like to know of you." She stuck her tongue out a little
and furrowed her brow as she thought about that, "If I lost you,
then I'll just say that you have to be the one to decide what
you want to know. Not me."
