Re: Derivation
By: Darrus Date: August 6, 2014, 11:33 am

Darrus bounced his focus between the remaining bottles scattered
amongst the tree boughs and and trunk as he listened to AJ
respond... or rather not respond as the seconds ticked by with
nothing coming from the mare to the point where Darrus wondered
if his question had just simply been ignored. A turn of his head
back to face the mare let him notice that she'd been staring at
the ground, Darrus flicking his eyes between her and Rainbow a
few times then raising his brow and putting on a small smile in
playful expectancy of a reply, Darrus again treating the
situation much more casually as his ears perked up when the AJ
cleared her throat and finally gave a response.
"Heh, that's because you asked first," he pointed out with
amusement as his hoof scooped up another rock and his vision
took a brief detour to again refresh his memory to the position
of the remaining targets of glass and labels, "you were the one
who wanted to go out to the tavern together tonight, which you
have to admit could easily be called a date type situation if
both parties involved so desired.
"So... let's say for a moment that maybe one party did so
desire," he continued, bouncing the rock in his hoof and looking
up in an exaggerated show of contemplation over the idea, "let's
say a handsome winged pony who is about to dominate in a game of
target practice wanted to go ahead and call this night out a
date. What would you say his chances were?"

Applejack groaned quietly when Darrus retorted once more with
saying that she'd been the one to ask him out that day, despite
her already having said those weren't her intentions. She had no
idea what to say to him at this point, and even less so when he
started to hint that he was in fact interested in a date.
Flustered by that, and caught slightly off-guard if simply by
the fact that it had been something she'd been avoiding thinking
about and something she'd never had to deal with in the past,
she just blushed faintly as she looked up to the rest of the
bottles in the boughs, painfully aware of the burning sensation
at her cheeks. "Ah reckon it's still yer turn ta break some
bottles," she reminded him, apparently trying to dodge his
question. She had no idea why Rainbow had yet to say a word, but
if she had to take a hunch, she'd suggest that maybe the
direction the conversation had gone, she had lost most interest
as she was wont to do with most things she considered 'gross',
and stopped paying attention.

Darrus grinned at both the way AJ avoided the question and how
her cheeks were looking a little warmer all of a sudden.
"Right," was all he said to her reminder, his gaze once again
fixating onto the tree and the targets left to shoot for. Five.
Two more or less level with each other but a fair spread apart
about half way up the tree with one a little higher and another
higher still with a final bottle near the base of the tree at
the bottom. This time his eyes narrowed in focus as he worked
out his next shot, Darrus counting the remaining targets and
having his eyes move in a pattern as they jumped from spot to
spot, him doing this several times as he swapped his rock from
one hoof to another and then lightly tossed it up in the air
where it was caught by one of his wings. Licking his lips in
concentration as his original hoof picked up a second rock, he
soon became satisfied with what he had in mind.
"Okay..." he said with a nod as though agreeing with his own
idea, "okay... Yeah. Alright. Mares! I urge you not to blink,
cause I wager you wont want to miss this."
One more repeat of his the pattern of his eyes and Darrus put
his plan in motion, him tossing up his rock and then rearing
back onto his hind legs where he then threw one of his front
hooves like a piston, hitting the rock with his hoof and sending
it speeding off towards its targets. The first bottle to fall
victim to his shot was the second highest, the rock easily
hitting its mark and shattering the bottle as it continued on
and ricocheted off of the branch behind it, the curve of which
being enough to send the rock upwards and towards yet another
branch behind the highest bottle where it bounced again. Unlike
AJ's shot earlier where the ricochet from the branch still
carried enough force to shatter half of the bottle, the bouncing
around this rock had already done had slowed it down to much to
destroy it so dramatically, it instead only breaking off part of
its neck as it knocked the bottle from its perch and was granted
another small boost in altitude as the bottle crashed to the
ground below and the rock arced upwards into a descent in front
of the tree, seemingly towards the lowest bottle it appeared to
be headed for.
There the shot would have ended had it not been for Darrus's
second rock held in his wing and for his having other plans, his
eyes locked onto the first rock as it began to fall towards the
bottom bottle. When the time was perfect, Darrus let fly the
second rock with his wing it blazing through the air and
managing to hit the first rock in mid fall exactly how he'd
intended, the force of the hit and even the geometry behind it
sending each rock exactly where he wanted them to go, where he
wanted them to go being the two mid height bottles of course,
both of which the first rock had been falling away from and been
between before the second's intervention that sent each veering
off towards both bottles and shattering each at the same time.
So, with four bottles taken care of that left the lowest bottle
untouched and seemingly not included in Darrus trick. This
didn't remain the case however, as while the second rock that
had struck the first had carried on past the tree after its
targeted bottle had fell victim to its assault, the first rock
was not done playing its part. Breaking its bottle, it again
struck one of the lowest branches of the tree, this bouncing it
back just enough for it to not only return to the full view of
the ponies watching from the front but actually re-enter the arc
it had been knocked out of before by the second rock, it
resuming its descent towards the final bottle resting at the
base of the tree.
Darrus took a step aside so as to turn his body to face the
mares once his original shot was back on its path. It was not
falling fast enough to break the bottle it was headed for at
this point, but it was able to hit its mark and land in the
mouth of the bottle. Not being small enough to fit inside as
well as not hitting it hard enough to bounce off, the rock
instead got lodged in the bottle's mouth, Darrus raising a wing
at the sound of the connection and then lowering his head and
wrapping his wing around himself in a bow that was well timed
and in synch with how the final bottle fell over from the shift
in its balance caused by the new addition to its weight, it soon
finding itself being split in half by another rock jutting a
couple of inches out from the dirt waiting for it at the bottom
of its short fall.
"No," Darrus spoke up as he pulled out of his bow and
straightened out his posture, his playful smirk present as he
dusted off a shoulder and carried on with a joke, "I don't
normally give out autographs. Buuuuut... I'm willing to make an
exception for the two of you."

Still blushing lightly as she stared up at the boughs,
Applejack waited patiently for Darrus to take his shot, almost
hesitant to think that he'd try to go back to his previous
question. She hated not knowing what to say, or what to do in
the situation, hated not knowing how she felt. As she tried to
put a little bit of thought into the matter, Darrus had begun
his turn, pulling AJ's attention away from her thoughts and to
the bottles still in play. She arched one brow when the first
bottle shattered, then another when the second rock hit the
first. Once all five bottles had been destroyed, she let out a
low whistle and looked over to Darrus, clapping quietly for him.
"Looks like ya won this one. Grats," she told him, seemingly
ignoring the joke he'd tried to make. "Ah don't even think Ah
stood a chance. You were just toyin' with me all along." She
shook her head after that, scuffing her hoof on a nearby rock.
"So what's next, then?"

"What next is we could still go for that race if you feel up for
it," Darrus replied glancing back towards the tree and the
shattered bottles littering the ground around it, "Or you can
just admit defeat now and be done with it. Loser of this game
was also supposed to clean up the mess, but, if you feel like
avoiding the hassle of picking up all that glass and want to
avoid more competition, we can make a deal here.
"I'll clean up the glass and all that, and we can call off the
best two out of three dealy we had going, but in exchange you
gotta agree to somethin. You gotta promise we'll go out again
sometime soon, but, next time?" he wore a small and almost
teasing grin, the way AJ had been behaving obviously having been
noticed, 'You let me call it something else. Like, oh, a date or
something, you know, along them lines somewhere.
"Course, we could still race if you really wanna." Still sounded
like fun to Darrus so he wouldn't turn it down. Besides, he, as
usual, felt rather confident in his chances of winning. "Could
make the date a prize if you fancy with whatever embarrassing
idea you can think up for me if I lose being yours."

At Darrus' suggestion of a race, Applejack nodded slightly, eyes
scanning the various shards of broken glass littered at the
tree's base. Then, she rolled her eyes when he mentioned
admitting defeat now and took a breath to reply, only to arch a
brow when he followed it up by saying something about making a
deal. She glanced over to him briefly, wondering what he was
hoping to get out of calling off the competition and picking up
the glass... only to have her cheeks flare up again when he
finally said it: a date in exchange for her not having to pick
up the glass.
Normally, she would've just scoffed and rolled her eyes at the
idea. She could pick the glass up by herself easily enough, and
she had no doubt that she could take him out in a race. But, she
had found herself admiring Darrus from time to time, despite how
much she tried keeping herself from doing so. She wasn't growing
any younger, either--she had never looked very hard for love, or
a relationship, but Darrus wasn't that bad... A little too
facetious from time to time, maybe, but he was a hard worker,
and not bad on the eyes either. Besides that, she had no idea
when she'd get another opportunity like this, and now that she
had been presented with one... She was admittedly a little
curious to see what it was like. To see why so many other ponies
seemed so infatuated with the idea.
"Alright," she began vaguely, her eyes coming back into focus as
she looked over to Darrus. "Yeah. You kin call it a date next
time we do somethin' like this. But Ah got a couple conditions
o' mah own." As she said the last part, she approached the tree,
careful not to step on any glass. "One: we clean up the glass
tagether. Two: if Ah bring up a subject you ain't comfertable
talkin' about, at least respect me enough ta tell me it ain't
somethin' ya wanna talk about, rather than dodgin' it or makin'
light of it. Ah kin take a 'none o' yer business' just fine."
She arched a brow before listing her conditions and lowered her
head briefly as if to start picking up glass, only to lift her
head again briefly as she said, "Oh, an' we kin call off the
race. Yer prolly not too keen on gettin' beat by a mare, so we
kin keep yer pride intact," then grinned a bit before she
started to pick up glass.

Re: Derivation

Darrus waited to hear AJ's answer, ears swiveling to zero in on
her as he eagerly awaited her response, though he was trying to
play it off as he usually was. This weak facade crumbled a bit
when he heard her say yes to his desire to take her out on a
date, the stallion dropping it in order to perform a small and
restrained hoof pump in celebration as well as say "Yessssss"
quietly under his breath before looking back up at AJ with a
slightly exaggerated raising of his eyebrow when she mentioned
her own conditions.
The first one was no issue, if she wanted to help pick up the
mess then he wasn't gonna stop her, but the second condition
caused Darrus to look away for a brief moment, him rubbing a
hoof on the back of his neck and avoiding eye contact with the
farm pony for a couple seconds then sniffing and shrugging it
off with a simple, "Sure. No problem."
The remark about preserving his pride snapped him back to his
usual self however as he chuckled at the idea and took off into
a light hover so as to pick out the bits of glass that had
gotten stuck in the branches first and prevent them from
possibly falling on them from above.
"I admire your imagination, AJ," said Darrus while he pulled a
small garbage bag hed gotten from Lamplight for this clean up
from is saddle bags and started searching for glass, "but let's
save the fairy tales for your sister and her friends. For you
see, I am lightning both in the air and on the ground, so my
pride wasn't in any danger to begin with. I could have probably
been able to run to the farm, tag the barn and make it all the
way back here before you could even make it out of earshot of
this here tree." He boasted with a grin as he dropped another
piece of glass into the bag and scanned for more.

Applejack snorted quietly in amusement when Darrus talked about
admiring her imagination and that fairy tales should be saved
for the young'uns. Yeah, she'd heard exactly what Darrus was
saying... And she still would've won if drastic measures hadn't
been taken. The moment he finished talked about what he could do
before she left the tree, she responded, brow arched once more.
"Ah don't think you know what yer gettin' yerself into, Darrus.
Ah mean, Ah wouldn't blame ya if ya backed out now, but don't be
surprised if Ah say 'Ah told ya so' when you get left in the
dust. You had a good suggestion, though; we get finished with
this glass, then we race to the farm. First to touch the barn
wins. Oh--an' no usin' yer wings. Yer gonna race like we earth
ponies do."
She focused on picking up the glass after that, trying to get
every single piece she could without cutting herself in the
process, before waiting by the fence when the bag needed to be
disposed of. When that was finished and the race was ready to
begin, Applejack stepped over to the base of the tree and drew a
line in the dirt with her hoof before standing in a ready
posture, eager to prove Darrus wrong. "On 'go', down from three,
we'll start. We'll take the main roads, an' jump the fence once
we get to the farm. An' let's make this interestin': loser o'
this lil' competition overall has ta do somethin' embarrassin',
at the discretion o' the winner." She grinned challengingly at
him and pushed her hat tighter down onto her head, then turned
her attention forward again.
"Three... Two... One... Go!" she cried, immediately sprinting
forward in a full-speed gallop, hooves thundering on the ground
as the wind whipped her mane behind her, the widest of grins on
her face as she pushed her body as much as it would go, highly
enjoying the sensation.

Re: Derivation
By: Darrus Date: August 29, 2014, 1:46 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
"Lighting both in the air," Darrus repeated when AJ said he was
going to race without his wings, him dropping back to the ground
after having found the last of the glass in the branches and
landing next to her, wings outstretched, 'and on the ground." He
finished, snapping his wings to his sides as he used that as his
way of saying he agreed to his being restrained to using only
his legs.
After finishing their clean up, and after Darrus had told
Rainbow Dash that it had been a pleasure meeting her in case she
decided to fly off on her own business, Darrus lined up next to
AJ as she drew the starting line and began to explain the rules
for their run to the farm. When AJ mentioned making things more
interesting by having the loser do something embarrassing,
Darrus grinned, ideas already floating through his mind when he
agreed with a simple "You are so on" and put himself into a
ready stance.
As the farm pony started to count down, Darrus's first instinct
was to spread his wings as his body immediately wanted to either
take flight or use the flapping of his wings to assist speed,
this of course being his most natural form of movement as he
spent more time in the air than n the ground, but rules were
rules and by the time AJ reached the count of one he'd managed
to shrug off the urge to fly and kept his wings pinned to his
sides. Besides, he doubted he would actually need them to beat
AJ as it were, this thought feeling both more and less accurate
at the same time when the race began.
Both ponies exploded into full speed gallops, Darrus even
without his wings proving to be capable of keeping up with AJ as
he remained neck and neck with her, the tree behind them quickly
shrinking into the distance as they sped onwards. Darrus, being
in the shape he was in and having as much constant exercise as
he did due to his traveling lifestyle, had very high endurance
and was naturally quick, both in the air and on the ground, but
without the assistance of his wings to keep him pushing forward
he was only a fairly decent sprinter on his hooves at best.
There was no doubt in his mind that if he had his wings he would
be having much less trouble keeping up with AJ, the mare already
beginning to edge slightly ahead of him as they shot down the
road, but when against an earth pony who was in the kind of
shape that AJ was and forced to only use his legs - a handicap
for him where it was a strength for her-... Yeah...
Still, Darrus was not one to admit defeat until after he'd been
officially defeated and the winner named, so he pushed himself
harder to make up for the small lead AJ was starting to gain,
his energy and endurance still keeping up as he again became
even with her, but his legs were starting to slowly shake their
figurative head at him.

Re: Derivation
By: Applejack Date: August 29, 2014, 6:22 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
Applejack wasn't surprised to see Darrus keeping up with her.
She knew he had to be fairly quick, both between his being a
pegasus and the lifestyle he lived. But he still was no match
for her. She loved moments like these: pushing her body to the
limit, letting the wind whip through her mane, feeling the
adrenaline that coursed through her body from the heat of the
moment... It was something she felt like she hadn't experienced
in much too long a time, and it felt good to let loose once
more. When she noticed DArrus starting to lag a little bit, she
giggled before calling over to him, "C'mon Darrus, don't give up
on me yet. At least give me some competition!"
After her tease, she looked back to the 'track' again, turning
her attention further up the road. She noticed upon doing this
that there was a relatively large circle of ponies gathered
around something in the middle of the road, effectively blocking
most traffic from getting through, aside from some small
pathways through on either side--pathways that couldn't be moved
through at the breakneck speed they were moving. There was,
however, a small pyramid-like stack of crates on the right side
of the circle, nestled up against a building.
When she neared this group, Applejack hung closer to the right
so she could leap up onto the top box when she got close enough.
For a split second before she leapt back down, she glanced over
to the inside of the circle to see what the fuss was about.
Despite the fact that the gathering was for nothing more than an
innocent game of Jacks, AJ still couldn't feel a little
irritated that they'd had to 'detour' like this as a result. Not
letting the brief glance slow her down, she leapt back down from
the crates without losing any of her speed and, upon hitting the
ground, started her full-speed sprint once more. "Up here on the
right!" she called out to Darrus, wherever he was, telling him
that a turn was coming up.
