Slowly, Lapis' lashing tail slowed a little, as she calmed down,
the crystal mare working silently at the gemstone, beginning to
chip away the edges in order to extract a piece large enough to
actually fill the socket on the Durilli.

... If the fire ruby didn't work... Where would he go to look
for a different gem that would fit with what the Durilli
demanded? This gem had been mined out from deep within a
volcano, so unless ther was a place in Equestria that was
literally eternally on fire, there really wasn't anything else
the stallion could think of that could possibly work better.
Staring down at the crystal before him, Sero focused on the
section of the ring that continued to try and circle the Durilli
only to be prevented from passing the other three sections by
invisible magical barriers. Why had the token worked? He didn't
remember it being in as extreme a place as an active gosh darn
volcano... So maybe there was meaning behind the gems that were
fitted to the Durilli instead of simply being based strongly
around and element? These thoughts had already passed through
the unicorns mind countless times in the past, but he'd hoped he
no longer needed to dwell on them after finding this fire ruby.
But... If it failed to serve as a fitting addition to the
Durilli... well... He just hoped it would.
Speaking of the fire ruby, Sero glanced over his shoulder and
back towards the mare cutting it, becoming curious about her
progress and wondering how far along she was in finishing her
work. Whil still not in the mood to try and start up
conversation, he tried to guess how much longer she would take,
though from his angle he couldn't see much and in fact needed to
rely entirely on her for actual accurate updates and estimates.

In order to work accurately, Lapis needed to focus, and so she
simply ignored Sero and his thoughts entirely, as she continued
to work with great precision and speed, continuing to chip away
at the segment of gem she was going to free and re-shape. All in
all, it seemed like this would probably take a long time, no
matter how hard and fast the crystal mare worked.

More time passed, Sero just keeping his eyes fixed on the
Durilli and the symbols it casted as he allowed the mare to
work. At this rate though, it was becoming clear that the two
would probably be a bit late in getting themselves any ice cream
or seeing a show once finished... not that the unicorn felt that
the chances of the crystal pony still wanting to share such a
thing with him was very high anymore. After another long period
of silence, Sero brought a hoof up to rub the back of his neck
with a sigh, him looking down at the ground before glancing over
his shoulder and back to the mare working on the ruby. Well...
he figured he should try and say something now... "... I wasn't
trying to insult you or act like I was smarter than you, Lapis,"
he explained with a second sigh, "just wanted to try and start a
conversation to pass the time is all. And, as I'm sure you've
noticed, I can get a bit excited about this kind of stuff."

Without looking up from her delicate, careful work, Lapis
sighed, and began to speak, voice quiet and apologetic.
"I'm sorry I snapped at you, Sero. And that I.. didn't read your
notes carefully. I know they're important, and you put a lot of
work into them, it's just.." Lapis started, before turning
around for a moment, her face set in an apologetic frown.
"I know you weren't trying to be a jerk, and you just wanted to
talk, and that this is all really important to you, and I
promise I'll try harder to read up on it all once I'm done
here." Lapis began, gesturing with her head towards the
half-ready Fire Ruby.
"I guess I just blew up because.. I hate being treated or viewed
as stupid, to the point where I just interpreted what you said
as mocking my.. reading pace." Lapis concluded as she turned
back to the Ruby, the ever so slightly self-dissapointed tone of
her last words, making it clear she hadn't been skimming through
his works solely out of disinterest, and rather, because she
didn't want to hold him up for too long while she read.

Watching the floating wind walker token as he listened to the
mare apologize then explain the reason behind her reaction to
him earlier, Sero frowned a little, again having his eyes shift
their focus down to his hooves before he turned to look back and
reply, meeting her gaze with his own briefly before having it
wander a bit. "I don't judge a pony's intelligence based on how
fast they read, Lapis, and I definitely don't view you as being
stupid. As I said, making you think I did or feel that way
wasn't even remotely close to being my intent... I'm sorry,
too." Catching a brief glimpse of the unfinished gem behind the
crystal mare, Sero tried to figure out what more he could say
here without somehow offending. "You know... Unless you would
prefer we go back to just sitting quietly in our corners, we
could still talk?" He offered, wishing to put their earlier
issue behind them, him looking back up to the mares pretty face
with an attempt at a small smile, "Whether it be me rambling on
about history or you telling me about your gem crafting, I don't
mind what we talk about. I just don't like long uncomfortable
silences with my partner."

Lapis remained silent as he spoke, her attentively perked up
ears, the only indication that she was actually listening to his
words, her eyebrows furrowed as if deep in thought.
After he had finished speaking, the ultramarine mare paused a
moment longer, rubbing her chin with a hoof, before she looked
up, smiling a little, and replied.
"Tell me about Sediment, and the Pebbles of Gaia, Sero." She
said, decisively, her smile widening a little as she turned back
to her work, clearly ready to listen as she worked, the idea of
hearing the story from Sero's mouth, more appealing to the
slow-reading mare than reading up on it herself.

Sero's smile became more genuine as Lapis answered him, the
unicorn nodding as she turned around to return to her work.
"Sediment was a kind of spiritual guide for these people," he
began his answer, taking a couple steps closer so as to be able
to comfortably watch the mare work without impeeding her
progress, "you'll see his name pop up plenty of times in my
journals as he was somepony who changed how certain practices
were carried out and was active towards the end of the most
recent events tied to this religion that I've been able to dig
up. From what I can tell, its possible he nay have actually
caused a kind of split among the faithful as his more modern and
simple changes being made to their very old beliefs possibly
rubbed older ponies the wrong way.
"For example, he made changes to the Pebbles of Gaia ritual that
I told you about. Just like with the rain trial, he gave his own
spin on the others, making them less... paganistic, and more
about testing ones intunement with the elements. Now, the ritual
was a kind of test to feel out the balance among not only the
major elements on the planet but also those who were actually
performing the ritual, usually younger ponies who hadn't yet
discovered which path they were going to take in their lives
until they've completed the various trials and this service for
their people. Um, a good example of a change Sediment made to it
would be how in the Earth trial it went from being focused
around a lot of chanting and dancing around a number of sacred
boulders to simply being a pony sitting in a small cavern
surrounded by smooth stones. It's said, from what I've gathered,
that even those without an easy outlet of magic, such as Earth
Ponies, were able to somehow manipulate these stones without
physically touching them, which was evidently a sign of
completing the trial if they kept it up for long enough." He
paused to allow both himself a breath and the mare a moment to
digest the information, him checking on the gem she was cutting
then glancing back towards the Durilli which only continued its
glowing hover.

Lapis continued to listen intently, ears perked up his direction
as she worked away, occasionally replying to his words with
brief comments and questions of her own.
"Well, some ponies will always oppose change, won't they? I'm
sure that it being their religion/culture didn't help Mr
Sediment's popularity at all." Lapis commented, turning her head
a little to shoot Sero a smile, her hooves still working away
busily even as she turned to face him.

"You got that right," Sero replied, returning the smile with one
of his own, "from what I've picked up, the guys not for the
changes were spending a lot of time accusing him of heresy and
claiming he was trying to deliberately ruin everything. Course,
then there was the other half who almost went so far as to call
him a messiah. So, one half wanted him dead and the other half
thought he was a savior. This was towards the end of what I've
been able to find in regards to a timeline for this religion, so
I think its safe to say this was, like I said, a major
contributing factor to whatever happened to them." Glancing down
at the ruby still being worked on, Sero glanced back at the
Durilli then back at the mare. "So, how's the ruby coming? No
snags or anything have come up for us to worry about while you
were cutting it, right? I'm starting to get excited about
testing it out again."
