Re: Journals and Gemstones
By: Lapis Lazuli Date: January 13, 2014, 6:43 am
---------------------------------------------------------
Lapis continued her quiet and intense reading of the journals
she had been offered, but as Sero spoke in dissapointment, she
looked up and frowned, although didn't stand herself.
"Don't be too eager to give up on the Fire Ruby, Sero. I thought
this was only a test to see if the Durilli reacted with a
fragment of the Ruby, rather than when it was filled by the Ruby
itself? Anyway, I'm still confident it'll work, I mean, it is
one of My gems, after all. Next, we just need to cut more of it
out, rather than a fragment that didn't even fill the socket."
Lapis replied, tone reassuringly optimistic, as she placed the
book aside and stood, moving to get out the Fire Ruby from its
case and reveal that it was still, bar one fragment that had
previously represented a tongue of flame, fully intact.
(So.. Will it actually work? X3

Looking over his shoulder at the mare as she spoke, Sero sighed
again and set his journal down, stepping closer and staring at
the fire ruby for a few seconds before replying. "... Yeah,
you're right... It's just that with the token it seemed to react
rather quickly when it came close to the Durilli, and I haven't
seen the same thing happen with the ruby yet. I was hoping for
some sign at least... Maybe it just needs to be cut more to size
is all...
"Anyway, how's that journal treating you? By now you've probably
gotten at least to the Pebbles of Gaia ritual. Fascinating isn't
it? What these ponies used to do to prove themselves faithful?
Have you seen my notes on the Shales yet? Or the Tectonic
Knights?"
(*Shrug* :P)

"Alright, just gimme a tic and I'll cut one down to the proper
size." Lapis nodded reassuringly as she spoke, moving to the
nearby display to retrieve the large, bright-red gemstone.
"Uh.. Yeah, it's making for.. very interesting reading." Lapis
replied unconvincingly, in response to his questions, the blue
mare clearly not having paid all that much attention to the
parts of his writings she had already read.

"... Sediment was an interesting pony, wasn't he?" Sero asked,
eyes taking on an unreadable shift as he watched Lapis walk over
to the ruby, "the Pebbles of Gaia ritual may have been older
than he was, but his work with Boulder and Clay to rethink the
rain trial gave it an interesting twist and more of a pure
intent I think. What were your thoughts on how the Shales
manipulated the Ignoco and molded their symbols? Seemed to stir
up some drama with the knights after the small reform. Maybe it
had something to do with why its so hard to find any information
about these ponies, especially the Shales, now? What do you
think?"

"Uhuh, Yep. It sure was.. dramatic. Mmhmm." Lapis replied,
vaguely, as she finished withdrawing the ruby from her display
case and brought it over to her workbench once more, placing it
down as she began to withdraw the tools necessary to cut it down
to the right size and shape.

Sero, having already noticed her lack of shared enthusiasm,
sighed and used a hoof to scratch his mane as the mare gathered
her tools, him then taking a few steps towards her and her
workbench to get a slightly better over the shoulder view of her
work without actually beig in the way. "... You don't know what
I'm talking about, do you?" He asked, sounding a bit
dissappinted at the thought of not being able to discuss
everything.he'd found with somepony else.
Seemed rather common for the stallion to be the only one to show
true interest in all the little details when it came to these
treasure hints of his. Sure, he'd occasionally be blessed with a
parter who shared his passion for history and would enjoy
countless hours of conversation with them, but more often than
not those he bumped into in his travels only saw the prize at
the end of the maze and not the etchings in the maze's walls
that explain why its a prize.

Lapis reply was almost immediate, and also completely blunt, as
she picked up her tools and began inspecting the gem, as if
visualizing the shape she'd need to cut it, not bothering to
turn her head as she spoke.
"Not even a little bit. Sero, I've had all of ten minutes or so
to scan the journals, and I don't read all that carefully on the
first go. If you expect me to be able to hold lengthy discussion
after ten minutes of reading One of Many journals, maybe you
should hire someone more brainy to come with us. That, or give
me a little longer to actually Read them." The crystal mare
responded, a little irritation creeping into her voice at the
slightly childlike disappointment in the stallion's voice, as
she continued working away at the ruby.

"I know every word written in those journals by heart," Sero
replied, having his own irritation show a bit at her blunt and
harsh response to his hoping to have had a simple conversation,
"and the pages you seemed to simply skim over were full of
everything I was just talkng about, written in simple easy to
understand and remember notes. That being one of the reasons I
chose them to begin with, so that you can get up to speed
quickly. I wasn't asking for a detailed report on them, just
your thoughts so far." Well, she seemed busy with the gem, or so
Sero told himself, him deciding to step back with a small shake
of his head before returning to the Durilli to watch and see if
there had been any changes as he waited for the mare to finish
cutting the ruby.

"I don't doubt it. That's because you're smarter than me, and
you Wrote them. No reason to be angry for my comparative lack of
ability to read both carefully and quickly, Sero." Lapis
responded, as bluntly as ever, openly admitting that she wasn't
the best reader, as she returned to her work once more, making a
visible effort to calm herself and her angrily lashing tail, as
she worked.

He wasn't angry, he was irritated, there was a difference, and
it wasn't over her reading skills, it was over her attitude. He
didn't think it wise to try and correct her though, nor to reply
at all from how her tone sounded, the unicorn knowing it
wouldn't solve anything. Simply occupying himself with the
Durilli, it still not having done much beyond float and cast its
symbols onto the ceiling, Sero said nothing, just continuing to
wait for progress to be made. He started to wonder something
though, but kept it to himself for now.
