Stranger in Town
By: Darrus Date: December 30, 2013, 7:17 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
Wings were a bit achy today, not all that surprising given
the... what was it now... few days at least of constant
travelling. Fly, sleep, fly, graze, fly, Darrus' well practiced
routine of moving and resting usually prevented any kind of
serious strain on his wings as years of hopping from place to
place had taught him how to get the most out of a days flight
without suffering for it later. Today though, it was feeling
like he'd gone a little too far the night before, the pegasus
stretching out on a cloud and peering over the edge towards the
streets of Ponyville below while his wings lightly complained
and tried to annoy him.
The aches didn't bother him at all, him easily ignoring it as he
teetered on the edge of a nap, the cloud acting as a nice fluffy
bed with his cloak serving well enough in mimicking a blanket.
However, Darrus had been spending most of that day so far
sleeping, and his body, with the exception of his wings, were
beginning to protest the excess sleep, instead urging him to
stretch his legs and find something that could hold his interest
and make his trip out here worth the soreness of his limbs.
Yawning, stretching then standing up and giving the streets
below another once over, Darrus dived over the side of the cloud
that was serving as his free bed. He plummeted quickly in a nose
dive before flaring his wings out just in time to slow himself
down and pull up to land with a skid, the pegasus kicking up
dirt then dusting himself off and folding his wings, which had
definitely hadn't enjoyed that, back under his cloak before
trotting off in search of anything worth checking out.

"Don't worry, Mom. I'll be back in plenty of time for supper,"
Honey called out as she stepped to the front door of her
mother's shop. "I love you all!" she followed up, shortly before
stepping outside and walking through Ponyville, familiar katana
strapped to her waist and her two fans situated into their
holsters in the weapon belt. Truthfully, she had no idea where
she was going. As she walked through the streets of Ponyville
now, she had no real destination. She just wanted to get out of
the house for a little bit, get some fresh air and stretch her
legs a bit.
She could always try to find Richtor and visit him. She smiled a
little bit at that, a wistful look crossing her face as her mind
wandered back to the night when she'd gone on that date with him
at the castle. They did still have to figure out something they
could start playing together, so maybe finding him wouldn't be
such a bad idea... Now where did he say he lived, again...?
As Honey tried to recall this fact, her gaze was caught by a
pegasus dive bombing down into the streets of Ponyville.
Normally, this wouldn't have made her think twice or ring any
alarms in her head... But unlike most ponies, he was wearing a
cloak, with a belt and saddlebags normally hidden underneath
that cloak. She could easily see it now thanks to the wind
catching the cloak and keeping it taut, as well as when the
pegasus landed and the cloak floated down behind him before
resting on his flank like it would typically. She thought she
saw something else there briefly before the cloak settled around
him again, but she couldn't have said for sure.
A little suspicious of this strange pegasus, Honey made her new
goal to be to follow behind him a little bit, and see what kind
of plans he had in her hometown, just to make sure he wasn't
going to be up to anything dastardly...

Darrus wasn't really seeing much that was succeeding in holding
his attention, the stallion trotting along at a mild and casual
pace as another yawn came to him, the pegasus not bothering to
hide or try to stifle it at all as he just continued on down the
street. He returned any greetings or waves hello from the ponies
he passed with a smile and nod combo as he passed by without
full pause. The ponies of this town seemed nice enough at least,
whether or not this should be news to him being unclear as
Darrus wasn't entirely sure if he'd been to this town before or
not. He didn't think so, but given how close Cloudsdale and
Canterlot were it seemed plausible that he might have stopped by
briefly years ago and simply forgotten. Not a good sign if he
had indeed visited in the past as forgetting a place he went to
usually meant it wasn't very interesting.
Blowing a raspberry out of his growing boredom then sighing and
letting his eyes flick around then settle with a half smile,
Darrus visibly leaned off to his right as he walked, veering off
and around the corner of a two story house where he then
seemingly vanished.

Honey simply watched with an apathetic gaze as the pegasus moved
through the town, not trying to be sneaky and hide that she was
trailing him in the slightest. She wasn't thrown off by the
waves and nods he gave in greeting to other ponies as they
passed, knowing that there was still something strange that she
couldn't quite put her hoof on. Yes, it was entirely likely that
her intuition was just overimaginative, but cloaks were also an
odd sight when the weather didn't call for it...
She turned the corner of the two-story house that the pegasus
had disappeared behind and froze when she saw he'd completely
vanished. Her blank gaze swept this way and that before coming
to the conclusion that maybe he'd flown away after realizing she
was on his trail. Which confirmed her suspicions, and made her
realize she needed a vantage point to get on his trail again.
Turning her attention over to the house, she examined it briefly
and plotted out her path before leaping up onto a nearby barrel
to start her ascent, before using a combination of short ledges,
window sills and awnings to leap and climb her way up to the
second story roof, all so she could attempt to find some hint of
the stallion again once she got up there.

"What's with the weapon?" Darrus asked once the mare who he been
following him joined him on the roof, him scratching his chin as
he leaned against the chimney of the house and glanced at the
mares sword with an amused look. "Are there frequent bandit
attacks around here that I don't now about? Seems like too quiet
of a place for that kind of excitment to happen on a regular
basis if you ask me. Also, how come you're following me around?
I know I'm pleasant to look at, but that just seemed rude,
especially with how polite most others have been acting." If he
was genuinely annoyed at all than it didn't show, the pegasus
just appearing to keep his casual demeanor.

That was about expected.
The stallion was just sitting there leaning against the house's
chimney when Honey had leapt onto the roof, almost immediately
greeting her with a long list of questions. As calmly and
emotionlessly as ever, Honey turned her gaze to the stallion as
he spoke up, ears perked to him, her stance neither threatening
nor submissive. When he finished, Honey responded in a tone that
was cold and perhaps a little curt, even if her gaze remained
apathetic. "You're cute," she began, giving him a quick glance
before snorting quietly in a quick exhale. "But not that cute.
You would do well with a trim of your hair. The weapon is here
because it is part of who I am, and the reason why I was
following you has much to do with the same. As for bandit
attacks, if there are and I do find out about any," her gaze now
taking on a more pointed look at Darrus as her eyes narrowed at
him very slightly. "They will swiftly be dealt with.
"Have you realized you attract quite a bit of attention donning
a cloak like that where there are no others? Especially when you
have... hidden things underneath," she finished, walking a
little bit more towards the center of the roof in a slow,
collected manner.

"I think you're in the minority with that opinion," Darrus
replied, brushing his mane with a hoof, "you wouldn't believe
how many mares claim that my hair is their favorite thing about
me. I think I heard one even squee once when they were allowed
to touch it." His face shone a confident, almost smug smile as
he looked to exaggerate the act of petting his own hair with
pride. The narrowing of her eyes at him only earned a chuckle,
the stallion being very used to recieving such looks from ponies
of either authority or self imposed responsibility wherever he
went. Was never sure why. Apparently getting into a drunken hoof
fight, or in this case simply being around, was enough to label
him as somepony that needed watching.
"Have you realized that this is just a traveling cloak that I
wear for the sake of protecting myself from the elements while
I, gasp! travel?" He responded to her questions, adjusting how
his hooves were crossed while maintaining his lean against the
chimney. "Sure, its easy to recognize that I'm from out of town,
but only an overly paranoid pony would become legitimately
concerned because of it. As for what's under the cloak, aside
from more of me, please contain your excitement, I think your
sword would attract a lot more attention then my personal
possessions ever would.
"Also, if you saw that, then you clearly are admitting that you
were totally checking me out." Openly and obviously messing
around with her now, Darrus stood back up straight, not seeming
to care much about the mares cold attitude and advancing towards
the centre of the roof as he walked over to its edge and just
glanced over what parts of the town he could see. "It's so
booooring around here... How can you stand it?"

As Honey stared at this stallion in front of her, her mother's
endless lessons about patience came to mind. He was somewhat
aggravating, but it wasn't the worst she'd seen. He reminded her
of her father enough--mostly because of his way of thinking and
attempts at breaking the situation down through humor--so
remaining level was easy. Deep breath in through her nostrils,
hold for a moment, slow breath out through her mouth... Her gaze
followed him as he moved to the center of the roof, right beside
her, and to the edge, Honey having prepared her magic only
briefly as he passed. A fleeting thought, borne more from her
training than actual suspicion that he would try anything.
"I have never seen this place as boring," she continued, her
voice a bit less curt now, though still cold. "It was always
just home. It certainly has had its moments in the past--such as
when the Everfree began to spread here, or when Discord turned
this place into his playground. Against moments like that, this
town's 'boring' nature is appealing by comparison. But even if
it is boring otherwise as you say, I have never noticed. I was
too busy training to pay attention to this place.
"And while you are true when you say that my sword oft brings
skepticism, that matters little to me. I know my duties and what
is expected of me. As such, it is why I trailed you. To be
bluntly honest with you, you bear the description of vagabond
and delinquent well. Take it how you will, I simply find it
easier to speak what is on my mind. Much less feigned interest
and facades to deal with that way, would you not agree?"

"Yup, I would," Darrus replied, sitting down at the edge of the
roof and continuing to scan the area with his eyes, "you're
rather accurate too by the way with the vagabond thing, hence
the cloak and my 'traveling'. Delinquent not so much, but I do,
as you may have guessed, get bored on occassions and need to
find something to do in order to liven things up some. Also, if
we're going to continue being bluntly honest with each other,
you fit the description of a mare who takes things far too
serious. A real 'stick up the rear' type. Should just relax a
bit. I won't bite, unless you ask me too, and I'm starting to
feel like I should have brought a heavier cloak with the chill
you're giving off."
He side glanced at the mare, expression not having changed,
"Sounds like I missed all the fun stuff. Any chances Discord
might start screwing around again, or did I just happen to visit
while the town was in the middle of a dry spell? So far all I've
seen are quill shops and ponies... gardening...There any place a
stallion can get a drink around here? I think I remember hearing
somepony mention this town when talking about cider once. Was he
a dirty liar that I now need to find and hoof wrestle?"

Though she rolled her eyes internally at his tellin her that she
was a 'stick up the rear' type of mare, followed by the terrible
cliche 'won't bite unless asked'. She sorely hoped he wasn't
planning for her to take him seriously. She felt like he was
trying just a bit too hard to try and hide himself through
facetiousness. Then, when he finished with asking where he could
find a good drink, and she actually let a roll of her eyes show,
not surprised at all by his question.
"Hardly, though I would not be surprised if you chose to find
him anyway and do so regardless. Every year, the owner of Sweet
Apple Acres sells the cider she makes at her farm, and is
apparently some of the best in the world. There are a couple of
places to drink, yes, but they are tame, and likely wish to
remain so. And Discord? Who knows. I cannot presume to speak for
the Spirit of Chaos." She paused for a moment before continuing.
"I would hope you were not intending to tell me something new by
telling me about my description. I doubt there is anything you
could tell me that I have not already heard at least once
before. I do not live to please other ponies. If they are not
comfortable with my mannerisms, that is a problem of theirs that
does not affect me in the slightest. If anything, it only helps
me realize who my true friends are."
She paused for another moment, glancing over him with a critical
eye again. "But I presume that is not an idea you are familiar
with, given how often you deflect the situation with humor. Or
when you begin to assume that ponies are dirty liars over a
small, trivial fact."
