"That you did, Sero. Hmm.. Well, how about, if it turns out the
Heart isn't worth anything in an economic sense, we could try to
sell it to a museum, or some kind of collector? Even if it's not
a big ol diamond, I'm sure it'd have Some value, especially as a
part of a collection on it. If it Is a huge gem though.. well,
what I'd do then.. depends." Lapis replied, smiling a little at
the thought of finding the supposedly immense gem.
"Okay, how bout this: If it's a huge gem, I wont need any of the
cut from the other things we'll gather. If it it's worthless, we
should figure out some way to set the whole thing up as a
collection, and split the profits around fifty-fifty, probably a
little in your favour. If it doesn't exist at all, then we
should just find a way to sell off what we do find, and I think
fifty-fifty would be fair, in that case." The ultramarine
crystal mare simplified, tilting her head in curiosity as she
awaited his response, clearly eager to get going on this
expedition.

"Most museums run almost entirely off of donations," Sero began
to give his answers as he started to wonder if food was served
here or if ponies just visited to sit around and talk, nice
enough place to do it, sure, but Sero hadn't eaten yet that day,
"and the ones willing to pay for their items usually treat them
with the same care as they do the money they throw in ponies
faces. Trust me, I know. As for collectors, I have ponies that I
speak to semi-regularly and make deals with when it comes to
selling off what I find. I'm sure I could get into contact with
a few who would be interested in buying."
As Lapis moved on to explain her New ideas for cuts, him noting
how his "fifty-fifty"s brief evolution to "sixty-forty" was
downgraded back to its original form after the mention of
boulders being their possible prize. Well... He wasn't sure
about giving away the Heart to a mare he'd, to be honest,
literally just met a few hours ago and knew very little about.
He didn't know much about the Heart itself... but, hey, it was
probably just another "mystic" gem, right? And as long as he
recorded everything he needed to know about it, and maybe guide
Lapis towards donating it to a museum then selling everything
else, there shouldn't be any harm done, right?
"Alright," he answered with a sigh brought on more by his
thinking than anything else, "sounds fair enough. If what I saw
in that collapsed temple was any clue, chances are well probably
be getting rich off of this thing just on the bits and pieces we
find along the way alone." He figured shed enjoy that news, most
who traveled with him did. "So..." He moved on, figuring they'd
talked business enough for the moment, "tell me about yourself,
Miss Lazuli. I feel like we're strangers. Probably because we're
strangers. I'd rather we know each other as partners if we'll be
running across Equestria together."

The restaurant seemed fairly busy, being the rather popular
place that it was. Even still, the lack of any waiters
approaching their table was strange. In reality, Lapis had
requested no interruptions, until her business with the
adventurous stallion was concluded.
"Well, you seem to be the expert on that particular matter. I'll
leave the sale of all non-gemstones in your capable hooves,
Sero." Lapis responded, shrugging dismissively, clearly glad
that Sero knew more than her about the sale of items like those
they might gather during their trip.
The crystal mare raised an eyebrow and frowned a little at his
sigh, worried she had insulted him with her terms, but she
quickly shrugged it off, smile returning as he agreed with her
proposed cuts, and only widening at his talk about the riches
that they would accrue as a result of the expedition, even if
they didn't find the Heart itself.
"Been meaning to tell you, Sero. No need for the formality; just
call me Lapis, or Lazuli. Or Laz, if you're feeling brave." The
miner began, chuckling a little at his continued use of "Miss",
not a title she was used to hearing in reference to herself.
His questions caused her to pause, the bright blue mare thinking
for a moment, and nodding to the nearby waiter in order to
signal they were ready to order.
"Not much to tell, to be honest. Out of the two of us, you seem
the more interesting." Lapis complimented, before falling silent
once more, a hoof rubbing her chin as she thought about what
exactly to say.
"Well, I was born in the Empire, as you could probably tell. I
grew up on my father's mine, and worked alongside my mother and
father, and their workers, to mine crystal to build and repair
the cities of the Crystal Empire. I earned my mark in mining and
gemcraft, and, a couple years back, I left home with some gear,
to find my own fortune outside of the Empire itself. I've lived
here ever since, travelling around in my cart to mine, shape and
sell gems, the rarer and more valuable, the better." Lapis
finished, her tone happy, but not overly proud, figuring her
life was relatively unimpressive.
"How about you then, Sero? I assume you do this kind of thing
often?" She inquired, leaning her cheek one on hoof, her
expression shifting into one of genuine interest and curiosity,
as she awaited his response.

Sero nodded and kept his full attention on the mare as she
spoke, eyes keeping focused on hers to both convey his interest
in her history and because he always found the unique irises of
the crystal ponies to be interesting. "You've probably seen
countless mines full of beautiful gems of all kinds, hm? Sounds
fascinating! That trip you took to find that ruby is probably a
story worth telling on its own. That's good. Having interesting
stories to share will make the slow days of travel go much
faster."
At his turn to speak of himself, Sero was feeling brave, "Well,
Laz," he began with a flirtatious tone before moving on, "I'm
probably..." Well... Compared to the average stallion he guessed
he was a bit interesting... "I was born and raised here in
Canterlot with most of my childhood being spent reading and
focused on my education. My parents were relatively well off
financially so they were able to afford some of the better
schools available in their attempts to make sure I became the
stallion they were sure I would be. Of course, what they wanted
me to be was a lawyer engineer who was also a part time surgeon.
I ended up being a librarian instead. Then a fair number of
years ago, after helping some ponies out on their own little
quest, I got into this line of business. Been all over the place
since then, and found a number of wonderful little trinkets that
a lot of ponies still aren't even convinced exist at all let
alone have been discovered."
Seeing a waiter finally show up to deliver menus, Sero opted to
use his hooves as opposed to his magic as he held and opened
his, him reading the available dishes with a hum before having
his eyes briefly flick up at the mare across from him, "You know
this place pretty well, right? Do they have a dish here that you
would recommend?"

"Let's hope so. I've got plenty to say about gems and mining,
Sero. Hope you don't get bored of it too quickly." Lapis
responded, chuckling a little, her own eyes drawn to his, as his
inspected her polygonal pupils.
Sero Was a brave one, wasn't he? Good, that'd probably be useful
at some point during their adventure.
"Heh, told you yours would be more interesting. I bet your
parents damn near had a heart-attack at first. Hope they got
over it though." She commented, grinning a little, his story
clearly of some interest to her, and his use of her pet name
eliciting no response except a slightly wider smile.
Lapis didn't bother with a menu, knowing exactly what she
wanted, and what to recommend, as the waiter arrived.
"We'll have two cannelloni's, thanks." The crystal mare spoke
up, answering Sero's questions by ordering the dish this
restaurant had mastered, above all others.

"Bored? I'm just hoping you won't mind me filling up journals
full of notes while you talk about them. I've been around and
done my fair share of studies, but mine's and such are not
something I'm a full expert on. Will be nice to listen to a
knowledgeable mare who can teach me a few new things." Sero
replied, eyes momentarily flicking up from his menu and back to
hers. "As for my parents... well... I just tell them I study
ruins. No need to mention the danger, right?"
As she ordered for the both of them, Sero realized how hungry he
was as he thought about the meal he was waiting for, a small
growl coming from his stomach that he hoped wasn't loud enough
to be heard. Smiling a little sheepishly, he brought a hoof up
to his belly briefly then dropped it with a clearing of his
throat. "Sounds like you have a favorite dish here. Will this
cannelloni be something to remember?"

"Well, I'd be willing to teach you what I know. Let's just hope
you're a good student. And, probably a good idea with your
parents, there, no need to alarm them without reason, eh?" Lapis
responded, leaning back in her chair somewhat lazily, a proud
smile on her face at the thought of teaching this already
knowledgeable stallion.
Lapis' great perception allowed her to notice the faint rumble
of Sero's belly, before he attempted to cover it up with the
clearing of his throat, and chuckling a little, she said as
much.
"Yep, and it Sounds like you're rather hungry to try some. As
for whether or not it's something to remember, well.. depends
whether or not you like cannelloni. Or good food in general."
The crystal mare added, smirking a little, her eyes returning to
Sero's once more, as she folded her hooves and leaned on them a
little, over the table.

"H-heh, heard that did you?" Sero asked with some embarrassment,
"I probably should have picked something up when I got back to
the city but is as too excited about the Durilli... And I am,
surprisingly, a very big fan of good food." He sat up straighter
to pretend as if what he'd just said was something unique and
interesting. "Haven't had any kind of cannelloni before though.
Tonight's just a whole new experience for me it seems.
"Actuall, somehow, that reminds me, how much time would you need
to be ready for our trip?"

"Yep." She replied, simply, smirking a little at his obvious
embarrassment, and replying to his question, his statement about
being hungry, and the fact he was about to enjoy a new culinary
experience.
"Well, the cart doesn't take too long to pack up, and the
security measures don't take long either.. I could probably get
packed and ready with a day or so of notice. Would help if you
could give me some indication of what to bring, by the way." The
crystal mare added, calmly, still resting on her forehooves and
smiling at the stallion opposite her.

"The usual traveling supplies," Sero began to explain, "money
for transit, food for when were off the trail, that ruby of
course, your pick axe, any appropriate papers for identification
should they be absolutely necessary, a bed roll for the nights,
you know. Traveling around as much as you do with your cart you
probably know what to bring for when you head off to mines,
right? Or do you just bring your cart all the way up their with
you?"
