Dinner at the Happy Onion
By: Lapis Lazuli Date: December 28, 2013, 9:33 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
It was about 8 in the evening when Lapis arrived at the
restaurant she had suggested, earlier that day. It was a
relatively fancy place, definitely upmarket, and just hanging at
the fringes of noble-level fanciness, the kind of place that
someone took another pony in order to impress them. Oh, and they
made a mean spinach cannelloni, which is why Lapis liked it.
It seemed she hadn't bothered to dress for the occasion, but on
closer inspection, one might have been able to notice that she
had brushed her long brown mane and tail a little, and decided
not to bring her pickaxe or jacket with her, meaning that her
toned, shapely body, in all its sparkly glory, was totally
visible, as she sat patiently at their table.
The table she had chosen was visible from the doorway, and while
she waited for Sero's arrival, Lapis continued to study the
design he had given her, already planning to cut her Fire Ruby
down to size, in order for it to fit.

Sero arrived around ten minutes past the hour, the stallion
having gotten held up in both his research and his grooming of
himself after he'd gotten home and had the chance to tidy
himself up a bit after his time spent away. The unicorn who
arrived now had a cleaner and more organized looking mane and
tail, the only items being worn other than his saddle bags being
a fedora he'd retrieved from his home to deal with the last legs
of the days heat and the compass that hung from his neck.
Giving the host of the restaurant the word that he was meeting
somepony there, Sero needed only nod in Lapis' direction to be
allowed inside, the mare being immediately and very clearly
visible from the entrance as she was, from what Sero could see,
the only crystal mare present. Approaching the table, Sero was
able to get a better look at her now that she as no linger
wearing her jacket. She was attractive, something he'd noticed
before of course, her coat giving her body a shine that made her
sparkle like one of the gems the stallion was hunting, him
appreciating the natural shininess of the mare as he'd grown
quite used to seeing crystal ponies during his time visiting the
Empire.
"Hello again, Miss Lazuli," he greeted, removing his hat from
his head with a hoof and smiling as he gave her a nod and joined
her, "studying the design I see. I'm not the best at scribbling
down sketches and such so I'll admit that the drawings may be a
little rough, but the measurements are solid. I've run the
numbers many times. You look nice by the way." He added, his
still genuine smile showing the honesty in his complement. "Do
you come to this restaurant often? Or is this just where you
take ponies when you want to discuss business?"

Lazuli looked up from her concentration with an irritated look,
only for that look to shift into a genuine smile when she
realized it was Sero who had disturbed her, and not another
waiter.
"Evening, Sero." She replied, calmly, nodding at the
clarification that his measurements were indeed correct, as she
had assumed them to be whilst she sized up how to reshape the
valuable gemstone.
His compliment caught a little more of her attention, the
ultramarine mare's cheeks flushing just a little in a mixture of
embarrassment and appreciation, but at the same time, she
frowned stonily, as if she didn't quite believe him. In any case
she didn't respond verbally to the comment, although her curious
eyes glanced appreciatively at the fedora upon his head, clearly
thinking that it rather suited him.
"I've always liked the Happy Onion. It's fancy, without being
too w'ankerish, and it serves good food without the snobbery,
and without expecting you to dress in, well.. a frilly dress."
Lapis replied, her faint shudder clearly conveying her disgust
in all things overly snobbish, and her hatred for most all
modern fashions, especially dresses. How are you supposed to
run, fight or work in a dress? Ridiculous things, they were.

"Most ponies in Canterlot just like to play dress up if you ask
me." Sero glanced around the restraurant, noting a few such
ponies who'd seeminkgy gone out of their way to look fancy,
something they probably were happy to note was easy to do
compared to such individuals as the white unicorn and the mare
he was meeting here. "Sometimes those fancier places and parties
can also feel like overly thought out tea parties that a filly
would want to pull her brother's into, as well." He wasn't a
stranger to going to said places and events, his line of work
often requiring him to accept invitations extended by the upper
class so as to discuss trades and the like.
"If you really want a place in this city where you can abandon
all the snobbery and feel like your in some small town where
everypony knows and is friends with everypony, I know a place
that serves good food, lots of it, and goes so far out of its
way to be different from all the high class restaurants that
they have card and billiard tables in the back, even cook the
food over fire pits in clear view of the customers as
entertainment. Maybe I can show it to you sometime. You might
like it, and I'd enjoy playing some of their games with you.
"So I take it you've been thinking about our little adventure,
and how that means we'll most likely need to head out of the
city for who knows how long going to all kinds of places. Would
your shop be safe while you're out running around?"

Lapis listened intently as Sero spoke, her pretty face resting
upon a hoof, as she watched him.
"Hah. You're right there, the fanciness has always seemed a
little foolish to me. And, really? Sounds like a pretty nice
place, good to hear not everywhere good in this city, has to be
snobby." The crystal mare responded, grinning interestedly, her
crystal hoof stroking her chin in thought.
"I have indeed, and, well, therein lies the beauty of my shop.
It's also a Cart, and, if things get too bumpy, or it becomes
too cumbersome, I've got some.. rather interesting security
measures." Lapis responded, grin widening a little, the crystal
mare clearly proud of her little shop.

"A cart?" Sero echoes with uncertainty, eyes turning upwards in
thought as his hoof tapped the hat he'd set down next to him, "I
was thinking more along the lines of taking trains and the
like... How mobile is your cart in terms of speed?" Hos eyes
narrowed with curiosity, "Security measures, Hm? May I hear of
them, or is it a secret?" He leaned forward and rested a front
leg onto the table, head turning away briefly as if to check for
a waiter headed their way before returning to again show the
mare his smile, the mention of such measures peaking his
interest from how she had spoken of them while the unicorn
enjoyed the sight of her grin, him feeling it begin to start
pulling his smile into one of his own.

"..In hindsight, maybe it's not Quite portable enough. Guess
I'll have to rely on my security measures, which will, by the
way, remain a secret." Lapis responded, after a moments thought,
chuckling a little at her mistake in thinking she'd be able to
take the cart with her.
"Sorry, Sero, you're a nice guy, but I'm afraid this is one
secret I've gotta hang onto." She added, still grinning,
although slightly less, as she hoped her decision to keep her
secrets, wouldn't disappoint the curious stallion too much.

Sero just shrugged. "It's the security of your shop." His said,
small grin, which is what it was now thanks to her's, not
dampening in the slightest, "No need to apologize for keeping
something like that close to your chest. So, if those measures
of yours are reliable enough to leave your cart unattended, next
question would be to ask how long your comfortable with leaving
it that way. I can't know for sure how long this venture will
take after all. It all depends in how lucky we get I suppose.
"Then of course we should probably get into discussing cuts and
so on. Fifty fifty sound fair for whatever we find," 'Not
counting all the trouble I've already gone through for this'
"and expenses for travel and the like would probably do best
with a similar arrangement." Sero didn't like talking so much
about business so early, but he figured it would probably be
best to get it out of the way quickly.

"Don't worry, I trust my security to keep my cart safe for
however long it takes." Lapis replied, smugly, glad that her
secrecy hadn't irritated the adventurous stallion.
"Fifty-fifty, hmm? Whatever happened to doing it for the sake of
History?" Lapis asked, with a chuckle, clearly not serious,
having anticipated a more equal share than the one brought up
earlier.
"Well, I'm fine with splitting costs equally, and fifty-fifty in
terms of the profit's not bad. Or.. You can keep anything else
we find in the process, so long as I, if we find it, get the
Heart. If the Heart isn't real though, or we don't find it, we
could split the profits we actually Did make, 60 40 in your
favour." The ultramarine mare added, after a moment, an eyebrow
raised as she saw how he would react to her alternate offer.

"I did mention how I can't pay for food with interesting stories
regarding history, didn't I?" Sero replied, leaning back more as
he listened to Lapis' counter offer that weighed more heavily in
his favor if he accepted one condition. "You want the Heart for
yourself?" His smile turned into a more thoughtful line, the
stallion glancing off to the side then back to the mare, "Big
risk when you think about it. Could end up just being a dull
boulder that is supposed to represent the worlds 'heart'. I'm
assuming you're banking on it being the gem that we hope it is.
What would you do with the Heart if we found it and I let you
take it? Sell it? Cut it down?"
